These two special tortoises are South American Yellow Foot tortoises, Chelodonoidis denticulata.

These particular animals arrived mid-december, and are settling brilliantly, and love their food!!
Closely related to their more frequently seen cousin the redfoot tortoise, this species is the largest South American tortoise, with records of animals up to 37" and 90 kilos! Not very common in captivity, these don't breed easily and are very sensitive to stress.
It's great to see this pair settling in so nicely!

Today's service launch is our new Collection and Delivery Service. We are now able to pick up animals that need rehoming and deliver adopted animals nationwide.

Animals available at the centre are now listed on our page and on our website www.ncrw.org.uk, but if you have an animal you are looking for specifically and you'd like to know if we have any available you can message us on Facebook or send an email to [email protected]

We will be doing regular drives around the country collecting and dropping off, and the service can also be used as part of our Home to Home service, where we post about animals that need rehoming that we sadly don't have space for at the centre. For more information see our Home to Home service page on our website.

There is a fee for this service, all information can be found on our website at https://www.ncrw.org.uk/homedeliveryandcollection where you can also get in touch to book the service.

If you need any other information please get in touch.

Another New Service is our National Tortoise Sanctuary. Although it has been running for a few months, they have now finished their enlargement and we are pleased to announce it is now fully operational, and able to take all types of tortoise, including Mediterranean and Tropical species. We are able to arrange a nationwide collection service for any tortoises entering the sanctuary.

As well as now being able to take all types of tortoise we are able to offer our new Hibernation Service from 2025. You'll now be able to leave your hibernating tortoise with the Sanctuary over the winter months until they are ready to wake up in the Spring, meaning you don't have to worry about maintaining temperatures or keeping your tortoise in safe storage for their hibernation period.

This doesn't replace our rehoming service, and we still rehome tortoises of all types from the NCRW Centre as well.

For more information head to our website www.ncrw.org.uk or take a look at the National Tortoise Sanctuary page. You can contact them for more information on services by calling 07723 575 656.

Here are some of our arrivals from December!

Having come from a variety of backgrounds, and from all over the UK, there are some very special animals here!

More information about them and their backgrounds will follow in the coming weeks!

Tunisian Spur thigh tortoises
Testudo graeca nabeulensis

These are one of the smallest Testudo species. Really intricate animals, with a big difference between the CB animals we tend to see over here when compared to older, wild-caught animals.

We have a very male heavy group here, but they tend to be more compatible in mixed-s*x groups than other Testudo graeca spp.

Here are some of ours enjoying a treat of Romaine Lettuce in their Winter accommodations! These aren't a species well suited to a typical British hibernation.

Redfoot tortoises
Chelonoidis carbonaria

These large, tropical tortoises from South America are one of our favourite species here at the National Tortoise Sanctuary!

A true omnivore, these tortoises love animal protein (Mice, chicks, bugs) just as much as their fruit and veg!

We have a large, mixed s*x group here at the sanctuary, one of the more 'social' species, very tolerant of each other male and female! Although they do sometimes get up to some mischief 🤣

Leopard tortoises
Stigmochelys pardalis

The leopard tortoise is one of the larger species readily kept in the UK, often exceeding 40cm, originally hailing from Sub-saharan Africa.

We have a large group here at the sanctuary, kept in our purpose-built heated accomodation over winter, and grazing most of the summer. They are all longing for Spring!!

Here are some of our permanent residents when they were still enjoying the summer sun!
