At this time of year we are out working in the garden, tending plants and mowing the lawn, but did you know that lawn grass cuttings should never be fed to horses. Please remember never put cuttings into any area where horses are grazing.

Unfortunately, grass cuttings are potentially very dangerous for horses to eat and sadly many have died as a result of people putting lawn mowings over the fence into horse pastures.

5 Good Reasons not to feed cutting to horses:

COLIC: A horse may gorge itself on piles of clippings. The large amount of grass can cause excessive fermentation in the hind gut. This can lead to colic or laminitis.
CHOKE: Horses tend to gobble down grass clippings quickly. Unlike grazing on grass out of the pasture and slowly chewing it, clippings require little effort or chewing to swallow. There is a potential risk that the clippings can get lodged in the esophagus.
MOLD: Piled up grass clippings can quickly grow mold, especially in hot and humid environments. Mold can also lead to colic.
BOTULISM: Dense piles of grass do not allow for air to circulate through grass clippings. This is an invitation for the deadly botulism toxin to develop.
POISONOUS PLANTS: Horses unknowingly eat toxic weeds and plants they normally would avoid when they get mixed in with the mower clippings.

Official Statement:

We regret to inform you that Hafod Arena will be closing in the near future. The viability of the equine rescue has resulted in this difficult decision. Unfortunately, the arena was not the fundraising facility that we had hoped it would be and as NCAR is a charity, the trustees have a responsibility to manage resources responsibly. We would like to thank everyone who has supported this venture.

All arena bookings will remain available until July 30th 2023. By honoring these bookings and future bookings until this time, we aim to generate funds for our charity and prevent the arena from remaining unused, considering it is a fantastic facility.

The charity will actively encourage potential buyers to utilise the centre
as a business, and we hope that our valued customers will have the opportunity to continue using the facility in the future once it has been sold.

The horse charity side of NCAR will continue but the horse and ponies will be relocated to our other site and be taken care of and will still be available for adoption.

It is important to note that these changes have had an impact on the on-site staff. We kindly request that you direct any questions or concerns to Karen Jones, the Hafod manager, at [email protected]. This is a sensitive time for the staff, and your understanding is greatly appreciated.

We deeply regret any inconvenience caused by this decision and appreciate your continued support.

Please note this does not affect North Clwyd Animal Rescue, Trelogan in anyway.

Poor Maggie has had to have a broken tooth removed!

No-one would have known it was broken, she showed no signs of discomfort and was eating just fine but, on her routine check Seamus from R D Owen Equine Clinic Ltd found it.

So off she went to Andy Peffers for some specialist care.

She is home now and recovering well.
