How do you train your dog to come back!?
My top tips are:
- I have my dogs on a long line or even off completely from day one when they are only 10 weeks old. For me this allows them not to build up a frustration for meeting dogs and people. A long line is safest for places with other dogs!
They are also more likely to stick closer to you when they are less confident.
- High value treats! We are using Forthglade salmon and herring and Country Hunter superfood duck bars.
- Practice practice practice! You need to be giving your dog the command to come, and be extremely quick to reward and praise.
- Enthusiasm! You can see one of my dogs Juno the lab is very happy and buddy, Tala the wolf dog is so so hard to motivate! But I speak in a high pitch voice and try to be exciting!
- Socialise your dog! Your dog needs time where it can run free and play, we have regular play dates with other dogs and this helps Tala then recall away from other dogs as she isn’t socially frustrated.
- Practice with distractions! Train in the park, around other dogs etc so your dog learns to choose to come back even with interesting things going on!
- Adapt the technique for your individual dog. You need to learn what works for your dogs personality!
🐾 Don’t give up! If you keep practicing, positive reinforcement, and allow your dog to be a dog, you will get there! 🐾
