Not many of us can say that about our dogs right? 🤣

Well it’s not always natural for dogs to be calm, usually it’s a behaviour that needs taught.

So many people would think:
Increase their exercise ❌
Throw a ball every day ❌
Take them running ❌
Go on long hikes ❌
Play date with another dog ❌

Although those activities are great, they aren’t going to create a calm dog, they actually spike arousal levels, if done too often - creating hyperactivity.

So for example:
Your dog is hyper and you get the toy box out - arousal level goes up👆🏻

You then meet a friend for a mate date and the dogs go crazy, arousal level goes up 👆🏻

You then throw the ball , arousal level goes up 👆🏻

And then, maybe you see a trigger & because their arousal levels are so high, they react. Arousal levels sky high👆🏻

You go home and play with more toys but the dog will not settle.

So you walk them again later…

Dogs calm themselves through natural behaviours
such as licking, chewing and sniffing.

The best possible tool to teach your dog, is to do nothing. To switch off.

Maybe practice doing one activity that excites them and counteract it with a calming behaviour.

Going on a walk? Encourage sniffing only.

Friends coming over? get the lickimat & chews out.

Dog gets excited by walks? Put their collar and lead on and then give them a lickimat.

Excitable dog in the car? Practice putting them in the car for no reason.

Excitable on walks? Walk to the end of your street & put them in a sit or down for 5 minutes and build on it.

Reward the behaviour you want to see. ✅

If your dog is excitable, let them do nothing. Do not put them in a position to get more excited and potentially fail at what you're asking them to do.

High arousal levels and hyperactivity leads to trigger stacking - and eventually reactivity.

Dogs need to engage in natural behaviours to relax, decompress, de-stress & just be a dog.

Licking, Sniffing & Chewing.

If your dog has been destructive in the house, it’s because they’ve been stressed and it’s felt good.

Dogs need to & will practice these behaviours by nature, they just need your guidance.

Providing your dog with regular chews:

Cleans teeth ✅

Great distraction if you’re in a new environment or having friends round✅

Makes your dog feel good✅

Redirects your dog onto what they should be chewing, rather than furniture ✅

Can help with crate training or car training ✅

Reactivity vs Communication

Reactivity is an emotional, heightened response to a trigger - like another dog, a loud noise, or a person. It often comes from fear, frustration, or overstimulation. Think of it as your dog saying, “I don’t know how to handle this situation!”

Communication is your dog’s way of expressing themselves intentionally - whether they’re saying, “Let’s play!” or “I’m uncomfortable.” Dogs use body language and vocalizations to communicate with us and other animals.

The Difference…

While reactivity is often an involuntary reaction to stress, communication is more deliberate. Knowing when your dog is reacting emotionally versus when they’re communicating can help you respond appropriately.

🐶 How to Help Your Dog:

✔️ For reactivity, focus on building confidence through desensitization and counter-conditioning.
✔️ For communication, observe their body language and respect their signals.
