I have put together a list of winter grooming tips. Simple but smart!
It's a long list but worth the read.
Use smart groom coat shine on your horses shoulders and withers before rugging. This will stop mane loss and shoulder rubbing from heavy rugs.
Spray your leg straps on your rug and filler strings with plenty of coat shine. This will help stop the muck sticking to the straps and manure.
Trim your horses tail a little shorter than usual at this end of winter to avoid mud locks forming and whipping your horses legs with mud and keeps the tail cleaner.
Heavy tails drag and get stuck round muddy legs so after trimming spray the tail with Smart groom mane tamer to keep it cleaner.
To keep your horses mud fever free and free from mud burns. Start with clean dry feathers and spray with coat shine liberally. This will stop the mud sticking and penetrating delicate skin.
Leave heavy feathers alone if you can. If you part the hair you will notice that the skin is clean and dry. The natural oils will protect the skin from mud burn.
If they do have mud fever wash the feathers with warm water and a mild wash such as Smart Groom lavender shampoo or baby shampoo. Dry thoroughly and gently. Dont pick scabs. If you have scabs to deal with then use a muddy buddy type cream and soak the scabs off with this. When they are ready they will slide off. Then gently wash once more. Use epsom salt wash (two table spoons to a pint of hot water then let it cool. Rinse over with cotton wool and let dry daily for a week.
If mud fever becomes infected dont leave it do asl your vet for antibiotic cream or use silver cream.
Plait a heavy tail into one big plait before turning out to help keep mud off.
If you do have to rinse legs make sure you rinse right through to the heel as wet muddy water will cause discomfort and wet vulnerable skin to become over soft and sore. Dont use a brush to clean as mud and bristles are abrasive causing more open scratches to let bacteria in.
Always dry gently with a soft towel.
Dont leave to heavier weight rug on your horse on sunny days. Horses do not feel the cold like you do. If your horses rug is too heavy it cannot take it off when the sun does come out. It will become damp and cause stiffness and bacteria will build up under the rug causing skin problems like folliculitis.
Groom your horse well to bring out the natural oils in his coat.
In your horses skin he has sebaceous glands that produce their own natural oils. The more you groom the more you encourage the oil down the hair shaft. This also encourages the skin to produce more oil and releases dead skin cells.
Oil in the hair means more waterproofing for your horse!
Winter is a great time to take that mane! Brush it from root to tip in sections daily bringing natural oils down the shaft, this will help lay the mane and the more you brush from root to tip the less dead skin cells and the shinier and softer it will become. Plait in big sections before turning out to help keep it clean and tangle free. Mane and tail spray is awesome to protect the mane from mud.
Mud dries the hair and causes it to become brittle. Keep it groomed well.
Horses roll in mud for a reason. To keep warm and to itch all the dead hair and skin out. Dont deny him of a roll in mud because you want to ride him. Just groom him more. The more you groom the better oils protect the hair shaft the easier he will become to keep clean!!!

Many thanks to all who came to our clinic. It was a fab day and went far too quickly!!! So we are going to make this a regular clinic. We will try and hold it on a weekend also so our younger members can get involved also as it's so beneficial and great fun. Everyone had a go today and got involved. We didn't get to cover everything I'd planned because we realise there is way to much to cover in one sitting. But so much was talked about and learnt about. So look out for the next date amd make.sure you get your names down when we do as it will be a popular clinic.
Thanks again to all who came along and supported the day and well done for having a go and thankyou for asking lots of questions and stretching my knowledge!! Photos to follow of our results!!
