We teach canine CPR using up to date, evidence-based guidelines for veterinary CPR. These guidelines have been developed by the RECOVER initiative and are recognised worldwide as the "gold standard" instruction in veterinary CPR.

Here is our latest cohort of students who came together at this weekend to learn and practice this life-saving skill. Some of these students also gained their Level3 Award in Canine First Aid. Great job, guys!

Unfortunately, not every Canine first aid course is the same.... here are some of the things we think make us different from the rest:

* Every course is taught by a REGISTERED VETERINARY NURSE.
* CPR is taught following the RECOVER guidelines
* Group numbers are kept small, usually a MAXIMUM of 8 PEOPLE, so practical skills can be taught correctly.
* We use REAL DOGS to practice handling skills, measuring vitals, bandaging, and demonstration purposes.
* Our standard course is a FULL DAY, including 6 hours of teaching and assessment.
* Additional home study is required for those wishing to gain accreditation and a formal qualification .... WE DON'T HAND OUT CERTIFICATES FOR TURNING UP!Demonstration of knowledge and practical skill is needed to gain an ofqual regulated qualification and certificate from us!👌

Another one of those "well, it depends" questions, I guess.

I'm sure you'd agree that making sure our dogs receive the correct nutrition for their level of activity and stage in life is vitally important... but should the food we feed them provide tgem with more than just fuel? Can the food we feed actually enhance and enrich their quality of life?

With significantly less taste buds than us, taste, or at least taste as we perceive it, is probably not that important to dogs. What is important is texture and, to a lesser degree smell, because chewing and sniffing can help reduce stress hormones and release endorphins.

So, how we feed our dogs, or rather how we present that food, can have a big impact. This can be especially true for those dogs that might not have the opportunity to lead the active life that they were bred for or when age, illness, or injury prevents normal activity.

Small changes such as "scatter feeding," using puzzle feedeers, freezing food, adding different toppers, etc, really can literally make their day!

As the season winds down, will you be adjusting your working gundog’s diet to suit their changing activity levels?

Even though they’re not out in the field, your dog still needs the right nutrition to keep them in good condition and excellent health throughout the off-season, so here's some considerations.....

*Adjust Portion Sizes*
In the down season, your dog will likely have less exercise and physical activity. This doesn't mean you have to change your dogs diet, but you should reduce the amount of food you’re feeding to prevent weight gain. Keep an eye on their body condition and make adjustments accordingly. If you find that you're feeding over 10% less than the recommended feeding guide, then you should consider a lower calorie diet.

*Choose a High-Quality dog food, like Gwen's Choice!* Feeding a well-balanced diet that includes good quality protein, fats, and vitamins, even during the off-season, will help to maintain good muscle mass and overall health.

*Supplements*
Adding fish oil or joint-specific supplements to the diet of working dogs can help maintain mobility and should be continued during the quieter months. Most of the Gwen's Choice recipes already have fish oils and joint supplements added as standard, which means that in most cases, no additional supplements are necessary.

Good nutrition during the off-season will ensure they stay fit, healthy, and ready for the next season. If you're looking for advice or a different option, get in touch.

Haven't done one of these for a while, so here's what's been going on at Gwen's Choice this week....

Well, it's been all about the weather❄️🌨...
Lots of dog food orders were received early in the week, but snow and icy conditions delayed some deliveries. We're back on track now, with the courier making it up the icy hill on Friday and a beautiful trip around a wintery Vale if Clwyd on Sat saw that we completed all our local deliveries👍

Despite the weather, it's been busy behind the scenes with the 2025 diary already filling up!
* Wern Vets Cyf monthly Puppy Social evenings we're booked in the diary.🐾
* Canine First Aid bookings for Feb & March finalised. Looking forward to delivering training sessions to Hot Dogs Forests & Fetch and Nantlle Vale Dog Training Club 🐕🐩
* Also, lots of prep done this week for another semester with the next generation of Veterinary Nurses 📚

Oh, and of course, we found a bit of time to get outside with the dogs to enjoy the snow!☃️

So that was it, the first full week of the year done.
