Matrix Dog Development Dog Training Welcome to Matrix Dog Development. I chose the name Matrix Dog Development for many reasons. I get a real kick out of seeing dogs thinking.
(12)

Firstly, for those who are into films, I love The Matrix. Also, the meaning of matrix is an environment in which something develops. We want dogs to feel safe, secure and relaxed and to develop in an environment that is a positive experience for them and their guardians. I am an ethical trainer who has many hours of ethical training and have done lots of work with rescue dogs with multiple issues.

I specialise in adopted dogs having adopted 5 of my own six dogs. I have been volunteering my knowledge and skills to help rescue dogs for over ten years and once they're adopted, providing back up! To this day, I regularly have adopted dogs come to stay to save them going into kennels because that environment is just too stressful for them. I enjoy fostering dogs and giving them the skills to thrive in their forever homes. My current foster dog is high flight risk and has full separation anxiety. She's been my biggest life style change but boy have I learnt a lot from her. It really is my happy place. Reading the body language of a dog and knowing its meaning is the key to unlocking the potential of a dog to give it a happy and healthy life. I believe it's really important to keep learning and have been refreshing my skills and looking forward to doing my IMDT (Institute for Modern Dog Training) assessment in December. I have competed, and still compete, in many dog sports; Agility, Heel work to music, Hoopers, flyball, mantrailing and scent work. Over the years, I've built up some fantastic friendships of fellow competitors, some of which are professional vets and other specialisms in the world of animals. The common thing that binds those friendships are a love of animals and getting to meet so many dogs. My goal is to assist owners in having a better bond and understanding of their beloved dog. Not every activity suits every dog but every dog suits an activity from which the bond with their owner is reinforced. These activities allow the dog to develop, be happy and can offer a distraction from unwanted behaviours.

Sorry I've not been in contact much of late.
Today I say goodbye to Switch. Its not been a easy choice, it's fully supported by Switch's medical team. Unfortunately we are unable to get on top of Switch’s health conditions. So we will be euthanizing Switch Today.

It's what's best for her but it's emotionally draining for myself and my partner. Anyone who has met Switch knows what a special girl she is and I know many of you will be upset!

Switch and I encourage you to have some chocolate and raise a glass not in sadness but to celebrate her life.

To Switch the bitch!!

We all know how I perfer to see dog's enjoying the environment around them, even reactive dogs can enjoy the environment.

Frustrated by always trying to get your dog's attention? Read this!

Dogs are individuals.

With individual personalities, interests, wants, and needs.

And guess what?! We actually ARE NOT always the center of their universe.

I hate the trend of focusing solely on rewarding dogs for paying attention to us. I think this is unrealistic and is neglecting the needs of our dogs.

Let your dog sniff.
Let your dog play with other dogs.
Let your dog say hi to people if they want to.
Let your dog dig.
Let your dog explore.

Let your dog have their needs and interests met by things other than JUST YOU!

I absolutely support teaching a strong recall and reinforcing our dogs for checking in with us, especially when out and about and in training contexts, but I'm here to say that society is taking this concept too far!

So the next time you're out with your dog, let them sniff, wander, have the play session with their friend etc BEFORE trying to get their attention.

And in fact, when you take this approach, your dog will be more likely to actually pay attention to you because you won't be constantly nagging them. They will get to indulge in the environmental distractions that they want to, so you and your training will actually become MORE enticing!!

Yesterday was one of the hardest days for me. This handsome boy is Zeus. Unfortunately Zeus crossed over the rainbow bridge.

Zeus Gaurdian really did all she could for him and the vet was certain after seeing Zeus behaviour change that he most definitely had a brain problem. No amount of training can cure medical problems.
Even though we still convince ourselves it can. Zeus had a massive behaviour change and couldn't keep weight on at all.

I felt very privileged to be there when Zeus crossed the bridge. Keep running crazy handsome boy!

Danni again I am deeply sorry, he is at peace and rainbow bridge has gained another angel xx

Hoopering fun with Luna.

I love this video.

Why? because it demonstrates how much thinking is needed for shaping. Training New things is about fun and Safety. Luna's toy was on a long line to keep Luna engaging with her gaurdian.

Having Numerous dogs on medication and a believer in Quality or quantity. I want to make their life as pain free and comfort as possible.

Medications are not bad!

NSAIDs are frequently used to manage your dog's condition and can offer a dramatic improvement in mobility and quality of life.

There are many licensed drugs available that come in different formulations and are given in different ways. Generally they are very well tolerated.

Lil's smashed her walk today. Lil's human walked her today 🫣 she actually was amazing, even with me being a control freak. Lil's showed off all the work we've been doing. Lil's did some Parkour and free work all the while building confidence in the real world. We had one dog rush us because the human was on the phone and the dog free ☹️ the human had no control at all over the dog, Lil's handled it so well 🤗 we also met a man who called Lil's lumpy and then told me I was lumpy also 😆. Highlight was most definitely Lil's confused face everytime the cockerel crowed 🐓

Massive well done Lil's you're handling situations with choices and making the right choices 😇

Happy Easter from all the Matrix Dog Development crew and Theo who belongs to Companion Animal Nutrition.

Have a wonderful Easter.

🐾🌷 This Easter, remember that it's not just chocolate you need to watch out for with your furry friends! Keep your dogs safe by being mindful of these hazards:

1. Easter lilies: These beautiful flowers are toxic to dogs if ingested.
2. Easter grass: The decorative grass in baskets can cause intestinal blockages if swallowed.
3. Xylitol: Found in many Easter treats, this sweetener is extremely dangerous for dogs.
4. Small toys and decorations: These can be choking hazards if ingested.
5. Overindulgence: Avoid feeding your dogs rich foods, which can lead to digestive issues.

Keep your pups safe and healthy this Easter! 🐶💕

Well what can I say, muzzling these two doesn't mean the fun stops! Ice smashed it showing off in front of me as always proving his guardian to be a lier !! Zeus really struggles with his muzzle, will it stop him trying? No it won't short fun sessions will help his confidence. Well done boys, you both achieved something and that's all we can hope for and you both smashed it.
Karen Aspell and Danni Endbsl Murphy very well done ladies, they both did amazing and I know Zeus struggled but we've a plan going forward. 😊 I'm excited to watch them grow and more important advocating of dogs of type 😍

So Lexi the super, did an amazing job of helping Lil's see that not all dog's are scary. Lil's kept telling Lexi to back of with her body language and Lexi being the best girl did as she was asked. all movement towards Lexi was Lil's choice, Lil's gave great language and at times she was comfortable and other Lil's was very unsure. Lexi then had some relaxation with Ted and Trinity afterwards.

Lily, Rocco, Codey and myself took a new adventure. I'm so proud of how they delt with a reactive dog, Rocco did a tiny growl. I'm so proud of him, Codey recalled straight away and Lily didn't yell because she wanted to say hello. I'm so very very proud of them for learning to make the right choices.

21/03/2024

what can I say about Lil's this week has been very busy for her and she needed some decompression. So that's exactly what we did and Lil's Nailed it, we even found her favourite thing in the world a feather 🪶 . fantastic sniffing Lil's.

Hoopers the benefits for the dogs themselves.

In Hoopers dogs are working away from us so it helps create confidence and independence.

It’s also good for dogs that tend to bulldoze around because although they’re moving at speed, they have to be very conscious of what’s around them.

So it’s good for proprioception – it helps dogs to be aware of where they’re putting their feet and bodies.

There are also lots of benefits for us owners.

In Hoopers dogs are focusing on targets so we can easily turn that focus back on us, giving us greater control from a distance.

Oh yes, and it’s a lot of fun!

What kind of dogs is it ideal for?
I honestly believe that most dogs could benefit from Hoopers.

It creates confidence so it’s beneficial for nervous dogs.

It’s perfect for high-energy dogs too as it channels their focus – and of course it’s a great energy burner too.

Older dogs can join the fun as it puts less strain on their joints than agility and for that same reason dogs as young as eight months can take part.

That’s because unlike agility, Hoopers has no jumps. Instead, dogs navigate a ground-level course of hoops, barrels and tunnels.

The equipment ensures dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds can participate without having to take sharp turns or bend down for tunnels or hoops.

Hoopers is brilliant because it doesn’t exclude any dog or person!

Today my head has been mashed potato. So naturally Lil's needed extra support as the world was so busy.
Lil's made amazing choices, it was difficult for Lil's due to how many people and dogs we saw.

We aren't going to talk about me nearly falling flat on my face due to a squirrel.

To start Wednesday I had, Lily, Rocco and Codey.

We missed Bella but enjoyed the the birds singing. We worked on lots today, always working on lose lead walking. We did some Parkour! We worked on building up some duration in positions. Rocco doesn't like sit so he is learning to stand without pawing me, Lily is learning to sit quietly and Codey has decided he can sit quietly.

I have to admit Lily did become cross with me and was yelling whilst her slobber flew everywhere 😆😂

So we are doing Parkour to encourage more engagement with the environment.

final check up at the Royal veterinary college for Rama. I've been wowed from the start, making a choice in January to have spinal surgery, to find out its worked and Rama has a condition called tethered cord syndrome. it's very rare and incredibly painful. going forward Rama can return to being the happy go lucky boy he is. Enna Tagged along for company.

Enna and I attended a Hoopers workshop yesterday. we had great fun building distance along with Enna trying her hardest to ignore all the smells. Now if you're thinking she missed the first hoop you'd be right! is that a problem? no as in hoopers we carry on, its important to reward forward motion away from us to build the distance.
