Cyrille Bargeton trained both Remmie and Anky's horses in rollkur

Once again we in dressage seem to be involved in a huge controversy concerning overbending the poor horses’ necks. It is ridiculous to place the lion’s share of the blame on Anky van Grunsven and Sjef Janssen, as if this is something that they created. The politics suggest the Germans are blamin...

Peter Maddison-Greenwell – History
A committee member of the British Association of the Purebred Spanish Horse, Peter had begun to promote the Spanish Horse here in the UK. By 1988 Peter and Danielle as El Caballo de España began to perform at county shows and historic venues.
Within four years the shows had become one of the leading equestrian attractions nationwide. Soon followed by sponsorship and support, Peter started to create a series of major productions in the hospitality industry for companies like San Miguel, Iberia Airways, Seat Cars, Hoechst Pharmaceutical, and Compaq Computers at some of the major venues: Olympia, NEC, Alexandra Palace, Excel and more. Peter was simultaneously building quite a name for himself training horses and teaching. This he has done from the age of 14 riding for the well know banking family, the Rothschilds for a number of years, through school and college. Peter had taught “riding” from the age of 16, even running a small Riding School full time for the summer before college. Still seriously riding through college and full time work Peter met Danielle who also had a passion for horses. They quickly began gathering various horses always with an interest in the Spanish Horse and History. Along with an opportunity to ride with and learn from Sylvia Stanier, a long friendship developed. She had encouraged and even introduced them to Old Masters such as Nuno Oliviera. Further than that she introduced them to the Equerry to Queen Elizabeth II who invited Peter and Danielle to keep the El Caballo de España team and horses at The Royal Mews for four days as they performed in Central London.
Over the years whilst being on the committee of BAPSH for sixteen years, seven of which was as Vice Chairman and Chairman Peter began to Judge at many shows, where the Spanish horse was now being recognised. The Royal Windsor Horse Show, The BAPSH and later the new GBPRE breed show. Peter became respected as one of the country's leading authorities on the Spanish Horse and its history and traditions. In 2006 he wrote the book: 'Living and Working with the Horse of Spain”. published in England, America and indeed Spain.
In 1994 El Caballo de España soon took a major step forward into a new level of shows performing at Camden the Roundhouse, London. This attracted Princess Margaret and her Royal Entourage and several celebrities all wanting to see this new show, "The Legend of Spain". Peter and Danielle had become the creators of a new genre and so founded "The First Equestrian Theatre". Since then they have produced a number of different shows for the hospitality world and the general public.
This brings us to their recent shows: The Horse of Spain, The Royal Horse of England and now a grand amalgamation of previous shows The Royal Horses of England and Spain starting in March.
Over the years Peters shows, many Lecture Demonstrations and clinics have grown and in 2001 Peter truly became recognised as an International Classical Dressage Trainer. Since then he has been invited to: America, Germany, Dubai and indeed Spain where he has also had the honour to perform Garrocha in the Carmona Bull ring. Becoming so well respected he has presented prizes alongside Alvaro Domecq (the founder of The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art) at a National Doma Vaquera Championship. Peter has performed before Royals, Sheiks and Celebrities at some of the most prestigious events such as All the Queen's Horses and The Dubai Film Festival. Despite this recognition and status in the equestrian world, Peter remains approachable and kind to both horses and their riders. As he has said the most famous quote from some of the great riders of the past “When riding one should leave your ego at the gate”. He also has said, “I consider that we are very fortunate, that having dedicated our lives to promoting the Spanish Horse and Classical Riding, we have had the good fortune to have lived a wonderful life doing it!”
About Lecture Demonstrations,

Peter is the founder of El Caballo de España and The First Equestrian Theatre. You will seldom find a more knowledgeable teacher with such passion for the history of horsemanship which he passes on in his shows, demonstrations and teaching. Peter will present three stallions. Talking about 'training the imperfect horse'. the development of dressage as we know it from the medieval and Renaissance era, training for battle and the Riding House. Discussing dressage as an art and its relevance in today's competition. Finally, how the work of the past is still of great importance today!

There will be a frank and open Q&A session and an opportunity to meet the horses up close and talk to Peter and Danielle.

ALSO ON THE SAME WEEKEND OPEN CLINICS
There will be limited places to both take part and watch.
Peter has taught Internationally for over twenty five years, more than sixty trips! Invited to teach in America, Germany, Dubai and even Spain, where riding with and performing alongside truly passionate classical and traditional horsemen has been influential to his own development. These experiences have made Peter second to none as the most versatile, rider, performer, teacher and trainer. Working in Hand, Doma Vaquera (the work of the field) Alta Esquela (high School) Garrocha (as an Artform) and the historical skill at Arms. All of this has been demonstrated and taught for many years.

Peter has trained many horses of his own and many more for clients. His passion is undoubtedly based on the principles of the “Old Masters” having studied the books and put into practice this knowledge with all types of riding horses and all levels of riders. He has become well known for his fascinating lecture demonstrations where he shows the ease with which to ride. “Light hands and still legs” are the foundation of Classical riding. “The Horse should appear to do the movement as if of its own accord” is first and foremost in his teaching. The idea of a soft rein in Piaffes and Passages is seldom seen today but is achievable with correct guidance.

From the crucial understanding of the correct seat and use of aids at the beginning to the advanced work of any horse, Peter is respected by many riders who have competed and performed at the highest levels and still call on him for help with those difficulties we all have in training our horses.

Over the last two weeks I have dealt with three drivers who thought it was acceptable to rev their engine, beep their horn or swear/abuse horse riders on roads in South Warwickshire. All because they were held up for a moment or had to slow down.

This it totally unacceptable and extremely dangerous for the riders, horses and the driver.

Where evidence of such behaviour is provided to the police,we will take appropriate enforcement action to educate the driver. This can include one or more of the following.

1) A Section 59 Warning being placed on the vehicle and driver. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2002/30/section/59

2) A Traffic Offence Report being issued for inappropriate use of a vehicle horn.

3) A person being reported to court for a public order offence.

4) Being reported to court for driving without due care and attention or dangerous driving.

I would encourage all horse riders to be familiar with The British Horse Society guidance for riding on the highway.

https://www.bhs.org.uk/advice-and-information/common-incidents/riding-on-the-road

Operation Snap can be used to submit video footage of offending drivers. For those riding on the roads frequently an action camera might be a worth while investment.

I appreciate we all have busy lives but our roads are used by more than just other vehicles.
Cyclists, runners, horse riders or ramblers could be around the next corner....so please take care and be considerate.

This interactive game was produced to see if you can spot potential hazards while driving around Warwickshire.

Really super interview with Peter.

Now looking forwards to working with him from October onwards (notwithstanding Covid).

During the summer Peter has been working hard on a new and exciting venture for Club Caballo.

This features videos of Peter and others riding their horses with explanations of lateral movements.

There is also the opportunity to join in on Zoom discussions and in time to have your own video
critiqued by Peter as an ongoing training aid.

Worth remembering - especially when it comes to handling/riding/training horses.
Be stubborn about your goals, be flexible about your methods.👍

You can’t help them all!!

Yesterday whilst shoeing at an agistment centre a woman & her instructor were having a discussion about the woman’s horse, which was a beautiful big WB.

The horse has been going poorly for a long time & the owner is considering selling him. The instructor was telling the owner that the horse is just backwards thinking & the owner needs to be firmer, getting him more infront of the leg.

Normally I won’t say anything, but this horses hind coronary bands were pointing backward of the girth, suggesting NPA of probably -5deg or more.

I procrastinated for a while & then couldn’t help myself. Whilst they were not talking & both looking at the ground I said,

‘Excuse me, please don’t take this as I’m chasing work as I’m not, but I couldn’t help but overhead your comments & based upon what I’m seeing I think you should look at getting the alignment in his hind feet evaluated. I think it may help 😊

Then the owner looked at me, & I’m sure the temperature got colder by 10deg, & she spat out ‘it’s nothing to do with his feet!’

I said, ‘ok, no problems, I’m sorry that I said anything’

The owner replied, ‘i have a great farrier & it’s not the feet!’ She then stormed off with her poor horse.

The trainer said she has spent thousands on that horse with vets & there’s nothing wrong with the horse.

I said ‘Ok, I didn’t mean to offend anyone’

It does reinforce the fact that there’s 2 times when u don’t try & help people

1. When someone can’t load their horse on the float

2. When talking about horses feet & they’re not your client.

At least the temperature went back up after she left. But I do feel for the horse & wonder how many more are like this fellow in the world.

People often ask why I put so much on my FB page, well this is why! Hopefully someone reading my posts may just identify an issue & make a change to their horse that may improve its life

I’m fortunate enough to be rehoming a large dog today. This is NOT him but he too is looking for someone experienced to rehome him.

Too many people take on large dogs and are ill equipped to have them.

Horse/yard owners are (usually) a great place for a dog like him....🥰

Whilst all the counting is going Shelley is also working on more contact with Fuzz maintaining the rhythm.

24/01/2020

As we progress up the scales of riding Peter becomes ever more critical of even small discrepancies in our riding. In this case he focuses on Shelley's moving hands.

24/01/2020

As Shelley was able to stay on for a couple of days we finished with some wonderful soft canter-trot-canter transitions but Peter as always, had set Shelley and Fuzz up really well for these to be successful.

24/01/2020

Carrying on with me and working on maintaining the softness with variations in the rhythm.

24/01/2020

They finished with walk to canter on the right rein. A real leap up in the quality of their work.

24/01/2020

On the right rein Fuzz finds it harder and if Shelley blocks her by using too much right rein and turning her shoulders to the left Fuzz struggles. Softening the hand (rein) is not the same as giving the contact away completely. This is now the subtlety of more advanced riding.

24/01/2020

Self carriage Fuzz.

24/01/2020

Keeping and maintaining the contact through into the walk.

24/01/2020

Fuzz coming up from the seat and leg showing wonderful transitions.
