Just look at this gorgeous boy 😍 Today was blue and his mums 3rd session and we went for his first proper walk! In session one and two we laid the foundations for calm controlled behaviour, eye contact (crucial for loose lead walking) and a smiley lead with no pulling. There are so many steps that lead up to the first walk to ensure that it is a successful experience for pup and owner and this is what we have spent our time focusing on in preparation.
Blue walked beautifully throughout with lots of praise and food reinforcements to ensure the experience was as enjoyable and positive as possible for him. He came across two barking dogs, a motorbike, a hedge cutter, lawn mower, wheelie bins and numerous cars. His first walk couldn't of gone any better and I left behind one sleepy puppy and one happy mummy ❤💙🥰🐾

In light of the recent heartbreaking news regarding the beautiful XL bully's I wanted to give some advice to any owners who at this time must be petrified for their babies.

1. If you haven't already get liability insurance for your dogs, you can get this from dogs trust for £25 per year.

2. Start muzzle training NOW if this ban comes in as quickly as they are planning you need to be able to prove they can calmly wear a muzzle in public.

3. Start crate training.

4. Get your dog neutered as soon as possible, in order for your dog to be exempt they must be neutered! This could also stop your dog from having to remain in kennels whilst they go through the exemption process as some forces use something known as IES (interim exemption scheme) where you can keep your dog at home under certain conditions until the court date for exemption.

5. Make sure your gardens and homes are fully secure (zero risk of escape)

6. If the police come for your dog DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING the police may say its just to say you confirm you understand why your dog is being taken, but you will be signing your dogs life away!

7. If your dog has any behavioural or temperament issues currently, seek a professionals help NOW!!

For the rest of this year I will be offering all owners of an XL bully 20% off all of my services as well as payment plans (on a case by case basis)

Hi everyone! Happy Thursday, the weekend is nearly here and we finally have some sun 🌞

So just wanted to do a little post about the dangers of exercising our dogs in hot weather.

Dogs unlike ourselves find it much harder to regulate their body temperature, dogs do not sweat like we do, they can only sweat from their paw pads and noses, so their only means of reducing their body temp is through panting. This is sadly not very effective.

It doesn't matter what the temperature is most dogs will happily go for a walk, so this means we must use common sense and not walk our dogs on hot days or at the very least walk first thing in the morning or in the evening.

Dogs can suffer from heat stroke in temperatures 20 degrees and above so please use caution when it reaches this temperature. It can take just 15 minutes for your dog to overheat!!

Please also be even more vigilant if you have a short nosed breed, a large or giant breed dog, an overweight dog or a dog with any health conditions.

All my wonderful customers amazing dogs health and safety is my top priority so I will not walk or do any training sessions when temps hit 22 degrees or above.

And if your looking for ways to keep your dog occupied in this weather then take a look at my top 10 enrichment ideas!

Have a great day! ❤🐾

What is resource guarding?

Resource guarding (also known as 'possession aggression') is behavior a dog may display in order to control access to a valued item or space. A valued resource includes anything of value to that particular dog. Just as people value different items, so do dogs. A dog may feel the need to guard food, a bone, toys, space, another dog, or even a human. When a dog is actively guarding a resource, he might display defensive behavior to keep another dog, person, or animal away from the item or space.
Resource guarding is a normal, natural survival behavior that all animals, (including people) experience in varying degrees. The severity of the guarding behavior can range between mild and serious.

What resource guarding may look like.

Many of us know it when we see it; the dog with a bone that stands over it with his head held low, body tense at your approach. Some dogs remain quiet and stare intensely at the threat of approach, others growl, bare teeth, lunge or air snap (also known as 'air bite'). These behaviors are used remove a perceived threat to the resource being guarded. Some dogs (after their warning signals have been ignored) resort to a bite in order to remove the threat.

Here is a list of sample behaviors or warning signals a dog guarding a resource might display:

When a threat approaches they may stop, freeze or display slow body movements.

Intense staring and/or wide eyes.

Lip licking, flicking the tongue out or nervous or agitated movements with the mouth.

Hovering over or near the item, sometimes with the head low and eyes focused on the threat.

Low or deep growling, baring of teeth, lunging forward, or air snapping.

Biting comes in many forms. As soon as teeth make contact this is considered a bite, whether the dog causes injury or not. That the dog decided to lunge and bite, but shows restraint from causing injury does not mean the dog did not bite. Some dogs will bite and nick the skin, causing a bruise, or will puncture skin. Some dogs bite and quickly release (I call this a 'snake bite'). More serious and dangerous bites can occur when the dog continuously bites and/or holds on without releasing.

Muzzling punching. The dog will either gently or forcefully bump his nose/muzzle into the threat. This is known as a closed mouth bite and in some cases can be a very serious warning sign.

Fixated or intensely focused on a threat. Typically, the dog’s eyes might be glued to the threat and will be aware of their every movement. Some dogs might follow the threat around in an intense way when guarding. I find this occurs when a dog may feel very concerned or conflicted.

Body Blocking or Body Positioning. This typically silent behavior is intentionally used by dogs to block access to their valued resource. For example, you might find they will stand over or in between their resource and other people or dogs. If a dog is guarding a human, say their owner, you may find that they lean against that person, usually while staring at the threat. Or they may position themselves by standing in between the threat and the resource.

Some dogs will vigilantly look at the threat, then look back at the resource, then again at the threat and again at the resource. This is also a silent behavior that is often missed.

Why dogs resource guard.

Some of these reasons include:

Feeling threatened due to insecurity and an inability to cope.

Changes in the environment (a new baby, a visitor, a new dog, someone entering or exit a threshold or doorway, etc.).

Competition for resources.

Feeling like the resource might arbitrarily be taken from them, which could cause a dog to feel conflicted, vigilant, concerned, or angry.

Feeling the need to control the outcome of the environment.

If you are having issues with your dog resource guarding, please do not try and resolve the issue yourself. Seek the advice of a qualified canine behaviourist like myself.

To discuss further pop me a PM. ❤🐾

18/10/2021

Luna's mummy has very kindly given me permission to document their training journey, to show the benefits of professional support when raising a pup So here is the first update.

Luna has so far had three visits and here are the areas either her family have specifically requested help with aswell as areas that I always cover within my puppy visits.

Mouthing and how to manage the nippy, excitable teething puppy stage.
Toilet training (which Luna was already very successful with before my initial visit, YAY Luna)
Socialisation (when and how)
The YES cue
Mutually exclusive behaviours (eye contact to create loose lead walking)
RTN (reflex to name.
Desensitization to harness (in particular collar as Luna was very uncomfortable having a collar on and would actively avoid this before my initial visit.
Handling (getting Luna used to having all areas of her body touched (very important area to work on in prep for vet visits or Grooming appointments, aswell as general health checks and care by Luna's family)

Since my first visit Luna's family have been consistently working on her behaviour and training, aswell as regularly updating me between sessions on anything new that may have happened or if unsure how to proceed with something reaching out for advice (which I always encourage)

Due to this they have seen marked improvement in her behaviour, her mouthing at the initial visit was fairly intense and Luna's family were unsure how to proceed with managing this behaviour and making sure they were not unintentionally encouraging it. This is something that most puppy parents struggle with but without the correct support and guidance that can quite quickly become a problematic and at times dangerous behaviour.

Since our initial visit Luna's nipping has dramatically improved and her family have said how much happier they feel safe in the knowledge that if she begins to nip they have the tools to ensure they are not reinforcing the behaviour but actually showing her alternative more rewarding behaviours that are beneficial for both Luna and her family.

Luna is showing great improvement in all areas we have covered so far and alongside my support and the hard work of her family I have no doubt she will continue to go from strength to strength.

Keep your eyes peeled for more progress updates! ❤🐾

Introducing the newest and littlest member of the SH Canine pack. This is the adorable 4mth old cavapoo Luna.

Luna's family contacted me before they had actually picked Luna up to book in for some.1-1 sessions which is what I would always recommend when taking on a new pup.

We have so far done one session in which Luna and her family did great.

They have been working hard throughout the week on their homework and I can't wait to see this cuties progress tomorrow. ❤🐾

Introducing the absolutely stunning 8 month old German shepherd Molly to the SH Canine pack.

Molly's family got intouch after she started displaying a few undesirable behaviours that they wanted help to eradicate, aswell as some support with basic training.

Molly has had three 1-1 sessions so far and is already showing real enthusiasm for learning and starting to show real signs of improvement.

Always remember training your dog is not a sprint it's a marathon, and long term change and improvement takes consistent handling day in day out.

I am really enjoying working with this baby and can't wait to continue to watch her blossom.

If you would like some support with your pup or adult dog, get intouch. I can help. ❤🐾
