Day 3 - A shelter visit and 1-1 time with the dogs.
Today was a complete change in tempo. It was definitely a better day emotionally. Seeing how clean and wonderfully looked after each and every dog was here. It was a tonic ๐ฅฐ
We each got to work with a small amount of dogs 1-1. we didnโt have lots of time which was a shame because I think it was such a great experience I could have hung around all day.
Again, so many dogs available for adoption. Itโs would be wonderful if rescues could collaborate but it just doesnโt seem to be a โthingโ.
I hope that things do improve with rescue, and I hope that more education can be pushed out to people. If you know, you know!
I am a sucker for any of the dogs and they donโt have to be any kind of breed or size, though the bigger the better ๐๐ฅฐ However, there is always that one, who you canโt stop thinking about. That one (or two) that sit in your mind for however long.
Today, for me it was Simba. He has been waiting a whileโฆ I canโt see why because heโs such a beautiful boy! It would be really great if you could give these two rescues a follow @super_dogs_rescue and @woofprojecteu . The work they do is awesome and Iโm all for collaborating and sharing ๐โค๏ธ
Happiest of pups ๐ฅฐโค๏ธ๐

โMy dog loves cuddlesโ
Is this really true?
Here is a video of me working with Rosie. Rosie came in from Romania and she was an anxious little girl.
When i first met Rosie she would run around and jump up at new people coming in to the home. To some it would look like she wanted interaction. She would in fact โfool aroundโ, because she didnโt really know what to do with herself or how to be around new humans.
I have seen this so much in the past and then seen the awkward interaction between the dog and humans where they would try to cuddle and touch the dog thinking this is what they wanted. In fact the dog is unsure or worried. Seeing the dogs body language and how they react to this makes me feel sad for them.
Rosie was so lucky to find the human she did because she was given space and time to make the decision to approach, or not to approach. She was given choices and for anyone who wanted to interact, it was up to her if she wanted them to.
If a stranger came up to me and hugged me, i wouldnโt appreciate that. One thing i have learned through working with The DoGenius Institute is how giving our dogs a choice is a total game changer. We must give them as much time as they need for them to trust us, and building on that trust leads to a more relaxed dog who feels safe with us and the environment they live in. This is even before we introduce them to the world around us.
In the video I am sat on the floor, when Rosie approached I lightly tickle or stroke parts of her body. I then stop and see what she does. If she moves away, our time is done and we finish the interactions. You will see she moves around and nudges into me with a part of her body.
Rosie is very comfortable and likes the interaction. Itโs a great way to build on her confidence, knowing she can move away at any point, without me following her. I actually think Rosie could sit and be tickled and stroked all day ๐โค๏ธ
She has come so far and iโm very lucky to be one
Dogs have feelings too!
Sentience meaning the capacity to be aware of feelings and sensations.
Although it has now been formally recognised that animals are sentient beings, for many years they were not seen as this by many. Through ecological studies and social neuroscience, it shows that dogs do experience emotion.
Dogs can feel negative emotions such as pain, fear, boredom, and frustration as well as positive emotions such as contentment and joy. It makes me feel sad when I see posts on social media where a dog is looking โguiltyโ or โshamefulโ. These complex emotions are not something that dogs feel.
Stanley Coren a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia wrote: โThe complex social emotions, those which have elements that must be learned, donโt appear until late. Shame and pride take more than three years to appear, while guilt appears around six months after these. A child must be nearly 4 years old before it feels contempt. This developmental sequence is the golden key to understanding the emotions of dogs. Dogs go through their developmental stages much more quickly than humans do and have all of the emotional range that they will ever achieve by the time they are four to six months of age (depending on the rate of maturing in their breed). However, we know that the assortment of emotions available to the dog will not exceed that which is available to a human who is 2- to 2-and-a-half years oldโ.
Learning from experiences and being able to make choices, means that dogs are aware of what is happening around them and they can remember, process, and assess information to meet their needs and help them make positive choices. It is important for us to understand and recognise sentience as it helps us to identify the needs of the dog and asses their welfare in different circumstances.
Giving a dog the ability to make good decisions and express behaviour freely is important. Treating all dogs as individ
It is important that we are kind to our dogs and that we give them the training that will in turn help them make awesome choices.
I think itโs important for us as humans to be kind to ourselves too.
We received a video this morning of Eddie. He has had some great training sessions but sometimes taking it out into the world can be a bit scary for the humans. what if he doesnโt come back? What if it doesnโt work?
Eddieโs awesome guardians have been working on longline for a bit of added safety. Eddie has been doing gundog training with Nigel and a few training walks with Ali. In between the sessions his guardians have made all the effort to continue training and they have such a wonderful bond.
Over time what does being kind, using reward and choice based training do for you and your dog? See for yourselfโฆโฆ
GO TEAM EDDIE ๐๐๐
Training isnโt just for the humans and the dogsโฆโฆ.
