BAAH-LAND DREAMING…

We dream big at Baah-Land, unfortunately our resource just doesn't match. With the cost of living crisis biting we have had to put our plans on hold yet again and just focus on survival. With no revenue stream we rely solely on donations, adoptions and a share of product purchases from our website.....

With the driest summer on record since the 1970's and another heatwave on the way we are certainly feeling the repercussions!
🥵🌵🔥

The grass has been scorched so badly that it hasn't grown during its usual season (May-July) it's looking unlikely it won't grow now which leaves us in a dire situation 😖

Grass as the main food source for our Baah-Land family is now scarce and is already in short supply

Normally the hay would have been made for the winter stock by now but with no grass to even provide for the summer this winter is going to be a serious challenge!

We need to secure our hay supply now otherwise we just can't afford to to pay the prices that are already through the roof!

Can you help by buying a bale? A round bale is £20 now and will no doubt be over £50 by the time we get to the colder seasons.

As the sheep's only food source we have no choice but to buy the bales whatever the cost!

As always we are deeply moved by the love and support we get from our beautiful supporters, THANK YOU

The temperature is due to reach almost 40 degrees here today and tomorrow but that doesn’t mean we can stop working, in fact we must work even harder to keep our residents safe during this time!

We will making sure they have constant access to cool water throughout the day, shade to get out of the hot sun (thanks to your kind donations we have just bought some gazebos to create some extra shade in our paddocks for them!), and be frequently monitoring them throughout the day and night - as we will be staying with them to make sure they are all coping well, ready to spring quickly into action if they need us!

As some of our residents are vulnerable, these need a lot of extra care from us and these weather conditions do pose a threat to them. They’re simply not used to these temperatures. Rest assured we are doing everything possible to keep them safe 🐑

As well as being a sanctuary to rescued sheep, goats, chickens and geese, we’re also proud to provide a sanctuary for our local wildlife who often choose to make Baah-Land their home as well. We currently have several families of Barn Swallows nesting in our barn! They return every year to raise their young here at the sanctuary, knowing that they are safe; protected from predators, and with constant access to fresh water, food and nesting material. It is truly a joy watching them grow, learn to fly, and prepare for their long flight for winter.

Our wildlife were here before us and so we always do our best to live in harmony with them, sharing their land 💚

Meet Yoda and Marshmallow! These two little boys are currently settling in next door to our lovely Eliza who we recently introduced you to - the coat you can see then nuzzling belonged to their carer, as where possible we always like our residents to have a little piece of home (unless it was a home they would prefer to quickly forget, as is the sad case with many of our other sheep).

Although Eliza will never be able to see them, sheep form strong friendships, and as they grow up together Yoda and Marshmallow will help to become her eyes, guiding her around the sanctuary together, and keeping each other safe. We have several blind sheep here at Baah-Land, and all can be found with their friends, their guides, helping them to live life exactly as they do. We can learn a lot from our animal friends 💚

Following our post about little Eliza, the lamb born without eyes, we thought you’d like to see this small snippet of video we took of her during her visit to the eye clinic. Here she is happily grazing like any other lamb! She is getting used to the world around her using her other senses and we have changed our care routines for her to make life a little easier - we actually have several blind sheep here at the sanctuary, all who live with this disability in a way that is quite inspiring. Animals simply make the best of what they have and here we try to give them even better 💚

Meet our lovely Eliza, one of our very special lambs here at the sanctuary. Sadly little Eliza was born with no eyes. She was due to be killed, so was brought to us instead so that her life could be saved! Despite her difficult start in life, she has the most lovely nature and it is clear to us that she really wants to live.

We recently took her to Leominster Specialist Eye Clinic to meet lovely vet John who sadly confirmed that no eyes or eyelids had developed at birth, just her tear ducts so nothing can be done to make her see. He said she was blessed to be with us ❤️‍🩹 although we can’t help but feel sad for not being able to see the beauty of the world around her, she has never been able to, so will use her other senses very well - she has already learned to follow and lie in the sun. Such a sweet little lamb!

We will always do our very best for each and every resident here, and some like little Eliza do need that extra care and attention. We’re only able to do this thanks to YOUR support and we can’t tell you how grateful we are. We know our updates can be a little few and far between at the moment, but this is because we are simply so busy taking care of these amazing animals. We’re still here and we’re still caring - thank you for doing the same 🐑💚
