One of our favourite mantis. So beautiful! The Orchid Mantis isn't difficult to keep so long as its environment is warm enough with medium humidity levels and a good food source. These mantis generally do well with flying prey such as flies and wax moths. #orchidmantis #flowermantis #invertebrates #prayingmantis #bugpets
There's something more scary than dinosaurs lurking in Earth's ancient forests... 🐛
The long history of invertebrates is not often discussed, even though it's so fascinating. Thankfully, we can all sleep at night knowing none of these ancient beasts exist.
The pets we sell these days aren't quite as impressive as they were millions of years ago, but we welcome you to browse at Bugpets.co.uk. 🐛

Spider making another spider? Though this might look like your worst nightmare of a spider cloning itself, it is just a timelapse of a Mexican red leg tarantula shedding it's old skin in order to grow.
Tarantulas like other invertebrates have their skeleton on the outside, it's called the exoskeleton. In order to grow they have to periodically shed the old exoskeleton and then stretch out the new one underneath to accommodate a new larger size. This new exoskeleton then hardens over time.
You will notice that the fangs of the new spider are white. These will gradually go black as the spider hardens.

This is the world's heaviest stick insect, weighing in at around 65 grams, and growing up to 16cm long.
Giant jungle nymphs are native to Malaysia and Singapore but are kept as pets worldwide.
To fend off predators, Heteropteryx dilatata raises its back legs and abdomen high into the air, making itself appear larger, as seen in this video.

This stunning arachnid is the 'black mirror peacock jumping spider', or Maratus speculifer.
This particular spider is a female, with males of this species being cream and black with long thin appendages and dark abdomens that they wiggle around during their mating dance.
Native to Australia, Maratus speculifer grows to only half a centimetre in length, so they aren't typically kept as pets.
If you love other adorably unconventional spiders and animals, we invite you to check out our pets at bugpets.co.uk. Happy shopping!

Meet our newest additions at bugpets.co.uk - Vampire crabs! 🦀
These crustaceans are popular for their small, cute appearance and beautifully coloured exoskeletons. With many varieties to choose from, like the red & black "Red Devil Vampire Crab", or the orange & purple "Disco Vampire Crab", we can understand why these critters are so well-liked.
If you're new to crabs, you'll be pleasantly surprised to know that vampire crabs are incredibly low-maintenance and are great for beginners. Native to Southeast Asia, these crabs are semi-aquatic, thriving in paludarium setups that offer a mix of land and water.

One of our gorgeous Ghost Mantis females waiting on top of her enclosure for me to hand her some food. Ghost mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa) are a really alien-looking mantis and a great choice for beginners to the hobby. They thrive on flying prey such as small moths and flies, Here she is eating a wax moth which has hatched from waxworms we purchased. We don't feed our animals wild caught moths. #ghostmantis #prayingmantises #petbugs #bugpets #petsofinstagram https://www.bugpets.co.uk/product/ghost-mantis
Hissing Sid is our oldest and grumpiest male Madagascar hissing cockroach. He hisses as a defence when he doesn't want to be picked up and he has a different hiss to attract the ladies! Apparently, it works and we now have numerous baby Sids in the enclosure!
Hissing cockroaches make interesting pets. They are great for children as they are large and do not bite, though their spikey little feet can be a bit scratchy. Adult supervision is recommended for children handling any pet invertebrate. #hissingcockroach #hissing #petinsects #petbugs #bugpets
Tiny baby spiderlings huddled together in their silk egg sack. The babies will usually have their first moult inside the egg sack before breaking out into the silk hammock that holds the egg sack. At this stage momma spider guards the baby spiders against predators. Once the tiny spiderlings have left their silky nest they are usually on their own and momma spider ceases all interest in them though this depends on the species. Some wolf spider species carry their babies on their backs! Some species of spider namely velvet spiders make the ultimate sacrifice and let the baby spiders consume their dying body! #spider #spiders #spidersoftheworld #spidersofinstagram #bugpets #petbugs https://www.bugpets.co.uk/product-category/live-invertebrates/spiders-arachnids/spiders/velvet-spiders
