Continual Professional Development is an important part of breeding, we are always learning and adapting how we undertake what we do.

Ensuring we apply what we learn as relevant to our breeding programme.

And this last week we participated in "The National Dog Breeder Convention 2023"

We're members of various labrador groups on Facebook and see a lot of questions and posts about is their labrador the correct weight?

Firstly we don't subscribe to the weight mentality, as what is good for one labrador won't necessarily be good for another just like in people.

We work to body condition, and the Purina guide we've shared here is excellent at showing how your labrador should be.

We realise some people can't help but feed their labrador as who could deny those eyes staring up at you, but many labradors carry a genetic mutation that causes them to not feel full, this same gene is what makes them so biddable and easy to train.

So as owners it's our job to make sure we're keeping our furry friends in the best condition we can, it's also worth remembering that food intake requirements can fluctuate with the seasons and level of activity.

If you're out in the cold your labrador will burn more calories keeping warm than if it's a warm summer's day. Same if they're walking 10miles everyday and drop to nothing they'll need less food to maintain.

So it is a constant juggling act to keep them roughly where we want them, which is a fit and healthy dog.

Our goal as a breeder is to give you a healthy, confident, happy puppy.

From making sure the stud we choose is a good match to our girl Amber from pedigree and lines, health tests and through to their temperament.

Then once the puppies are with us were working to make sure your puppy is socialised and desensitised to as much as possible before they leave us for their forever home.

Including short periods of crate training and handling by as many members of our family as we can, everything is to make the pup as self assured as we can.

We love hearing from our pups new homes about how they're getting on, and especially when the little things we've done such as starting the crate training pay off, where pups on their 2-3rd night or even in some cases 1st night in their crate at their new home are not phased and just have a good old nap.

Tomorrow the pups have their vet checks where our vet looks them over and should give them a clear bill of health.

Carry out their first vaccinations unless we've agreed with their new family that they'll do their vaccinations due to incompatibility between our vets and their vets.

Here's the first puppy pack put together ready for the pups to start leaving us on Monday to begin their life with their forever homes.

Our last little girl has found her forever home, so we're happy to say our pups have all found some amazing homes.

Thank you to everyone who has shown an interest in our pups and have shared our posts.

Starting crate training is an important part of a pups development, initially a pup will be fearful of being enclosed but will eventually find it to be their safe place if done correctly.

As soon as the pups settle down we open the crate and let them have free rein of the kitchen, look at our last two girls having a snooze, the whole process was 10minutes.

We'll do this a couple of times a week just to reinforce that the crate isn't a scary place to be.

We've still got two gorgeous little girls looking for their forever homes.

We chose the sire FTCh Tanyrhallt Blue Bloods, for his breeding, temperament, health tests and compatibility with our dam Abiann Aila Smiler of Amberginreau.

Between them they have 50 field trial champions (FtCh) in their breeding, with many more field trial winners.

From working lines with strong biddablity and the flexibility to adapt to home life, these pups parents are as happy out and about in the open country as they are in front of the log burner on a winter's night.

Health wise the pups will be unaffected by the following genetic conditions which can affect labradors:

• prcd-PRA - Progressive Retinal Atrophy, night blindness developing into total blindness.

• CNM - Centronuclear Myopathy Muscular, weakness, abnormal postures, lack of mobility and collapse in cold weather.

• EIC - Exercise Induced Collapse, during exercise limb weakness often causing dragging of rear quarters, lack of balance and total collapse.

• DM Exon 2 - Degenerative Myelopathy/Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy, Neurological disorder affecting spinal cord resulting in progressive lack of mobility and causing incontinence.

• HNPK - Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis, drying out of nose causing inflammation, continuous irritation and visual disfigurement of nasal area.

• STGD - Stargardt Disease, is an inherited retinal degenerative disease that leads to visual impairment and blindness. It is caused by the degeneration of both rod and cone type photoreceptor cells of the retina. These cells are important for vision in dim and/or bright light. Dogs affected with the condition start to show signs of the disease before they reach to 10 years of age. Dilated pupils and decreased response to light are common signs.

These girls are ready to leave us on the 16th of October and will come with:

• KC Papers Including 5 Generation Pedigree Certificate
• KC 5wk free insurance
• Microchip transfer paperwork
• Comforter with litters scent
• Puppy information pack
• A Bag of Puppy food
• Lifelong support
• Puppy toys
• Puppy treats
• P**p bags

Please contact us with any questions you may have or to request an application form.

24/09/2023

When you contact us about our pups, we ask you to complete a short application form.

Why do we do this? It's so we have an idea about your life and home arrangements and find out a bit about you and also so we can make sure our pups are going to the best home possible.

At times we will also ask followup questions to your answers as it is our job as breeders to make sure that the risk of rehoming a pup is minimised.

Once the application has been reviewed and we're happy and confident you'll offer a good home for our pups, we'll organise viewings of mum and pups and ask you for copies of ID, just so we can confirm who you are when you come, you can block out drivers licence numbers and passport numbers it's just so we know who is coming before we invite you into our home.

So please don't be offended by any of the process it's to make sure we're being responsible breeders, as we care about where our pups end up.

Look at these faces waiting for their lunch!

Weaning is an important part of raising a litter not just for the pups but also for Amber, it's the start of moving them onto solid food and also reducing their dependency on mum.

We start at week 4 weaning them onto 1 meal a day, which is in our case Skinner's Field and Trial Duck and Rice for puppy's with water to make it soft.

And now coming on to week 5 we're on to 2 meals a day, this is so we can reduce Amber's milk production and by week 7 make them completely milk free by which time Amber should be producing next to no milk, as we want to reduce the risk of mastitis.

Did you know a puppy only has until around 16wks old to become accustomed to as many sights and sounds as possible before they enter the next phase of their development, where sounds can have negative impacts, before this stage all experiences are positive.

So socialising and desensitizing puppies is a hugely important part of raising a well rounded puppy and we start this process at 4wks old using the PDSA and Dogs Trust socialisation programme.

Exposing the pups to noises that they'll experience throughout their lives, from household sounds, to road noises to other animals and fireworks.

They may not have seen what makes the noise but they'll be used to the sound and not be phased by it.

It's our job to ensure you get a well rounded confident puppy which starts by ensuring we use the best stud dogs available and through our care before our pups join you as a forever home.

Today it's road noises, household sounds, and babies crying.

We love keeping in touch with our previous pups and owners here's Rossie from Amber's litter last year.

Having come first at two different nosework games with her owner Nadya Georgieva who keeps us updated with all of Rossie's progress and achievements.

Nadya and Rossie have also achieved level 1 and 2 of Scentwork UK which is great putting that working line nose to work 😊😊

We are happy to announce we are now taking reservations for our Dark Yellow / Fox Red Labrador puppies from extensively health tested parents.

Litter due around 22nd August 2023.

These pups have been bred with the view to improving the gene pool of Fox Red Labradors; with health, temperament and quality in mind, with 50 field trial champions in their parent’s breeding, and these pups will have 23 Field Trial Champions in their 5 generation KC pedigree.

Mum – Abiann Aila Smiler of Amberginreau (Amber) - A KC Registered working type Fox Red Shade of Yellow Labrador.

Amber is a steady natured, very loyal and loveable girl, very trainable and clever, with 15 field trial champions in her breeding. As our family pet she is fantastic with adults, children and other dogs. Her colour is a deep dark red and very sought after.

• Hip Scores 5/5
• Elbow Score 0/0

Dad – FtCh Tanyrhallt Blue Bloods (Troy) - A KC Registered Field Trial Champion working type Dark Yellow Labrador.

Troy has 35 field trial champions in his pedigree with many more Field Trial Winners in his breeding.

Troy gained his Field Trial Champion status as a 3 year old in his first year at Open level. He has been placed second at the 2019 IGL Retriever Championships in Scotland at 5 years old. He is a strong athletic fast dog but retains a lovely biddable nature.

He has very natural game finding ability and a great temperament with a good head and confirmation that seems to be coming through in his progeny.

Troy has sired some gorgeous examples of Labradors over the years, whom have ended up in both working and nonworking homes, and adapted beautifully to each situation.

• Hip Scores 0/2
• Elbow Score 0/0

The Parents are DNA health tested and the puppies will be unaffected by any of the following genetic conditions known to potentially effect Labradors:

Our aim is to give you a happy, healthy, bold, confident puppy, so we ensure that the puppy’s get as much socialisation and become accustomed to household noises, as well as outdoor noises inclusive of fireworks through our following of the PDSA socialisation programme from 4wks of age through to them leaving us to your home.

We also do short periods of crate training to help them for your journey home, and they will be well socialised with our family, from children aged 1yr old through to 8yrs old.

We don’t let them interact with other dogs due to them being susceptible to infection and disease, so when you come to visit your new puppy with us, please don’t be upset if we limit the interaction, or ask that you wash your hands, it’s to make sure they’re in the best of health possible before their vaccinations.

Your puppy will be:

• Microchipped
• KC Registered
• Wormed at 2, 5 & 8 weeks
• Treated with advocate (flea and worm treatment) and given their 1st vaccination depending on compatibility with your vet
• Vet checked whilst having vaccination
• Socialised in line with the PDSA puppy socialisation programme, whilst also being in our family home around our own children.

Each puppy will leave us to come to your home with:

• KC Papers Including 5 Generation Pedigree Certificate
• KC 5wk free insurance
• Microchip transfer paperwork
• Comforter with litters scent
• Puppy information pack
• A Bag of Puppy food
• Lifelong support
• Puppy toys
• Puppy treats
• P**p bags

We hope we have answered any potential questions you might have, but on the off chance we haven’t please contact us and ask any you may have, we’re more than happy to answer them.

A £250 non-refundable deposit will be required to secure your puppy when chosen.

Please contact us to ask any questions and to receive your application
