Good Beds ensure Better Sleep
Dogs, like people, need good quality sleep to stay healthy. Not only that, but a good night’s rest improves your dog’s memory and can even make your pooch smarter, according to a study published in a 2017 edition of Scientific Reports. That’s because when dogs learn new commands, they tend to do better in repeating those commands when they sleep properly. After all, when pups are well-rested, they have more energy to devote to learning.

Like people, dogs also need a good night’s rest to stay healthy. This is especially important for older dogs and larger breeds who need a bit more sleep than their younger, smaller counterparts. A cozy bed that cushions their bodies encourages pups to go to sleep and to stay asleep throughout the night.

Activities for your Dog. Obedience classes – Mental and physical stimulation can be accomplished together if you decide to invest in obedience classes. Something fun for you and your furry friend to work on together helps you form a bond together getting you both out of the house for a bit too!

Walking/Running – Those short potty breaks during the winter can be turned into a quick walk around the block with the right equipment. Make sure your pet has booties to protect those paws and a coat if necessary to keep them warm and protected while walking during the colder months. (And make sure you’re bundled up properly, too!)

Stairs – Do you live in a home with accessible stairs? This can be a great way to have a little fun and exercise too, all within the comfort of your warm home! Throw a toy up the stairs for them to retrieve or maybe try putting some lean treats or pieces of kibble scattered for them to find, either way those stairs can make great exercise for pets. Tug o’ war/Fetch – Best part about this, it’s an indoor and outdoor kind of play!

Doggie day cares – Most daycare facilities offer hours that fit almost every schedule whether you work early mornings or late afternoons. Depending on your dog’s personality will determine what kind of exercise they get during the day at the facility! (i.e. group play or individual play)

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DOGS. Got everything you need? Read on to learn four ways walking your dog can benefit your health.

1. INCREASE PHYSICAL FITNESS

It’s no secret that if you work out regularly, you’ll get fitter. But with many workout programs, half the battle is sticking with it long enough to see the benefits. Walking with a dog nearly eliminates this challenge—they will be your training partner and coach all in one. Once you start to establish a routine, they will be so excited to get outside that they won’t let you skip a day, rain or shine.

2. BETTER MENTAL HEALTH

There is a psychological reason why so many dogs become service animals for veterans and people living with PTSD: walking a dog can improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, and research shows that spending time with a dog can reduce output of the stress hormone cortisol.

3. IMPROVED SLEEP

You’ve probably seen your dog passed out on the floor when they get home from a long walk or long bout of play—this is because exercise is tiring! You might not need a nap immediately upon arriving home like your dog does, but studies have shown that regular exercise does help improve your amount and quality of sleep.

4. REDUCED RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

Daily activity not only helps keep your skeletal and muscular systems in peak working condition, it will also help maintain cardiovascular health.

TOP TIPS FROM REAL FIRST TIME DOG OWNERS
We asked real dog owners at Dogs Trust for their top tips and the things they wished they'd known when they first got their dogs. This is what they told us:

"The one thing I wish I would have known before getting a puppy is how challenging it is to crate train, you need to be persistent and realise that it isn’t going to happen overnight and takes time for the puppy to get used it!"
Lola the dachshund’s owner

"I wish I’d known how those puppy dog eyes can make you feel guilty for even popping to the shops. Even going on holiday without them can leave you worrying! The new addition is like a family member you are 100 per cent responsible for their whole life."
Shortcake and Pippin the Labradors’ owner

"With a busy family life, we include Diddy in our family activities. So weekends are full of exploring different walks, teaching him new tricks and then all snuggling down for a movie. This makes sure Diddy gets the exercise and stimulation he needs, as well as that fresh air and activity that is good for the family too."
Diddy the lurcher’s owner

"Don’t underestimate how hard [first time dog ownership] will be. There will be moments that you’ll doubt yourself and your ability to be a good dog parent. With persistence and patience, you’ll break through the other side and be overwhelmed with love and pride for just how far you’ve come together. There’s no feeling quite like it."
Flynn the lurcher’s owner

"I went through about 10 harnesses before I found the right one. Try to choose carefully, take your dog to the shop to be fitted and don’t buy a fleece one if your dog is going to get wet a lot!
"I wouldn’t have it any other way as he gives me so much back, but you need to be prepared that your life is going to change and everything will now revolve around your furbaby! You’ll have to consider them anytime you want to do anything that will take you away for a little while so be prepared to start saying, 'sorry I have to get back for the dog!'."
