TLDR; Yes! Dogs can eat Strawberries, in fact, they are FULL of fibre and vitamin C. However, they contain sugar, so ensure they are given in moderation.

As a dog owner, there is nothing more terrifying than turning around and realising your pup has eaten something they shouldn’t of. In this series of blogs, we’re going to look at various foods to see which are safe, and which aren’t so you know when to be concerned! Today, we’re looking at Strawberries. Firstly, Strawberries are not actually berries (who knew?!) they are actually fruit, as humans, we always think of fruits as healthy, however, the reality is there are certain fruits (Cherries for example) that are poisonous for dogs & cats, so it is ALWAYS worth checking if your four-legged friend has got a hold of something they shouldn’t have.

Luckily, Strawberries are completely safe for dogs and actually have some really good characteristics.

- Strawberries contain Malic Acid, which is a teeth whitening enzyme for your dogs' teeth

- They contain excellent levels of Vitamin C

- High in fibre

- They have a high-water content

Does this mean I can feed my dog strawberries all the time?

I’m afraid not….strawberries contain sugar which some dogs have trouble handling, this can cause an upset stomach or in some cases gastrointestinal issues.

It's also worth bearing in mind strawberry flavour products or canned strawberries are best avoided for dogs completely. They usually contain excess sugar or syrup or worse, they may contain chocolate or xylitol which are both highly toxic for dogs and may require a trip to the vets.

In conclusion…

Strawberries should be absolutely fine in moderation but, like all human foods, it is always worth checking with your vet before introducing them into your pet’s diet. If all is okay, ensure you are only giving your dog organic strawberries, this ensures they haven’t been treated with any preservatives and ensure you wash them thoroughly.

Our first blog post is up, talking about who we are, and our values.

Who we are; My name is Jon and, I started Pawfect Play with my wonderful partner Bianca, and of course dogs, Bella and Simba. Like many people, we started this company due to our frustrations of the quality of toys we were buying for our own dogs and felt there had to be a better option out there! W...
