If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure about how to choose the right trainer or caregiver for your dog, you could start with this simple thought:

🐾 Because I love my dog, this is what I’m going to do....🐾

❤ I’ll choose trainers who use kind, science-based methods—no intimidation, no pain—because training should build trust, not fear.

❤ I’ll look for a dog boarder or daycare provider with a council-issued licence in their name because that means their home has been inspected and meets safety standards.

❤I’ll find a groomer with kind hands and patience because my dog deserves to feel safe and not scared.

Because I love my dog, I’ll do the research, ask the questions, and make sure they’re in the best hands.

What Does It Really Mean to Be a Holistic Groomer? 🐾🌿

We've come across an insightful post from Yappily lister Woody's Holistic Grooming that explains what "holistic grooming" really means. It goes beyond just a haircut or a bath—it's about nurturing the well-being of each dog in a way that's kind, compassionate, and respectful of their unique needs.

What does holistic mean?

One of the first questions that always comes up when I say I’m a holistic groomer is “what does that mean?”

Being a holistic groomer means I offer more than just a groom. I take into account every single dog’s individual personality and adapt my set up or offering as needed.

Before I even think about picking up a pair of scissors, I look at your dog to identify any abnormalities or pain symptoms. I ask you questions about your dogs home life, their quirks and behaviours outside of the salon. I want to know what they eat, how often they walk, what they do for fun. I want to know how they react in the presence of strangers, what they do when they arrive at the vets and how do they cope with handling.

I learn their training style, what motivates them and what doesn’t. I learn their triggers and how best to manage them to minimise stress.

I work within their threshold to build their confidence and earn their trust.

I take into consideration their coat type and use appropriate products and equipment. I educate guardians on how to maintain their dog’s coat at home and can put them in contact with the right people if help is needed in other areas.

Holistic groomers don’t find a quick fix. We investigate a problem and identify the why behind it. We constantly invest in learning, not just about styling or grooming techniques but also about diet, behaviour, anatomy and the latest scientific advances.

We know, we know—we’ve mentioned it before, but it’s officially Train Your Dog Month, and this is important stuff! 🐾

The PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report, the UK’s largest annual assessment of pet wellbeing, reveals worrying trends about dog training. The last report shows how aversive tools and techniques are harming, not helping, our dogs.

It highlights the importance of positive, reward-based training, which helps dogs feel safer and more secure, and calls for better education on humane and effective training methods.

As the PDSA says: ‘An issue that may be contributing to confrontational behaviour and poor welfare in dogs is the use of aversive training methods.
