Planting trees will not save the planet
The ‘Farming bad, trees good’ philosophy is faulty.
No doubt there is room for more trees in Britain - but the right trees, in the right place, and without displacing other human activities with economic, ecological and cultural significance.
When political parties or corporations pledge to plant X million trees, consider whether it is more likely because:
(i) It is the ecologically sound thing to do; or
(ii) It provides a neat soundbite for Question Time.
Seeing productive farms destocked and planted, often in monocultures, does make my head spin. How many years will it be before land owners are paid to pull the trees back out again? And in the meantime how many farmland species will be predated to extinction? How many farming families, institutions and cultures will be extinguished?
Decide for yourself!

If you haven’t caught the mid-week vlog then go and take a look. I go back to the lambing shed I learned how to lamb sheep in. Spoiler: I’ve still got plenty to learn...
A technical is on its way for lunchtime as well so keep your eyes peeled for that.
