Farmers by day. Heroes by night. 🤩

A herd of about 40 calves have been rescued from the sea after escaping from their field and ending up on a rocky outcrop in the middle of the night.

Talking to your vet about doing some FECRTs to establish current status, and go from there!

2024 FECRT results show continued high levels of resistance to triple combination drenches and growing resistance to dual-actives.

The Cheviot goat population is estimated to be just 450 🐐

According to legend, the goats of the Cheviot Hills originated when the monks of Lindisfarne abandoned their monastery in 875AD.

Amazing how hard stock bulls have to work! You can see why the North Americans place so much emphasis on foot structure and locomotion 😳

Bulls are athletes. Here's 18 month old DRI Cattlemaster K924's 2 week activity. 3100 ac, 1,483,165 steps covering 64 miles and who knows how much up and down. Those are 500' changes top to bottom. He was developed properly and now working hard!

TB Myth Busting - The Skin Test 🐄

The main test used for screening for TB is the tuberculin skin test, which involves injecting two types of liquid tuberculin (dead TB bacteria) into the neck to trigger a local reaction. After 72 hours, the reaction site is examined and measured to determine the result. Each animal will either be negative (clear test), positive (reactor) or inconclusive (IR).
Some key facts to know about the skin test are as follows:
• When an animal tests positive, there is a 99.98% chance that it is infected with TB. This means that out of 5000 reactors, only 1 would be a false positive and not be infected.
• When an animal tests negative, there is an 80% chance that it is not infected with TB, but a 20% chance that it is infected (i.e. 1 in 5 animals with TB will be missed by the skin test). There are several reasons why an animal with TB may test negative on the skin test, including infection with other diseases (such as Johne’s Disease) and very recent exposure or very advanced TB infection.
• When an animal’s result is inconclusive, it cannot be said for certain whether or not it has TB. It is however, up to 12 times more likely to test positive at a future skin test and therefore poses a key infection risk to the herd.

For more information about the skin test, or to book in your government funded TBAS visit contact the office to speak to one of the team.

Keep Talking!

Many thanks to the team at Tinto Farm Vets in Lanarkshire for their brilliant help with our Stand by Me video! We caught some of the action when vet Ross Wilson made a farm visit to Andrew Baillie’s dairy herd. Many thanks to you both and the whole team for your support. We know farm vets up and down the country work hard to support farmers and, especially at this time of year, their support is very much appreciated. ❤️ RSABI is here 24/7 on 0808 1234 555 for everyone working in Scottish agriculture. Rain, rain go away....

This will be one of the most relentlessly wet years that we've had for sometime, and certainly doesn't make a hard job any easier!

While there is nothing we can do about the rain, there are some sweet treats in reception if you need a small pick me up while passing by.
