We are gearing up for a busy Fall season of transporting dogs with multiple shipments to the USA, Canada, Japan, Brazil, Finland, the EU, and Iceland already in preparation. Let us know how we can help you too. Being dogs owners and competitors ourselves,we know how important it is to have people care for your dogs as well as they care for their own. Next week we will also be competing with four of our own dogs at the Welsh National Sheepdog Trials.

Even better news just released from the CDC
United States Border Collie Handlers Association
Update to the CDC Regulations

By Pearse Ward on 07/22/2024

In response to feedback from many people in the livestock industry, members of the public (including many of you who reached out to your representatives), other dog groups, and ourselves, the CDC has relaxed their rules on importing dogs from countries where rabies has a low incidence.

As of August 1st 2024 and through April 30th 2025, the only documentation required for importing a dog into the United States, or re-entering the United States with a dog is the CDC Dog Import form which can be completed online by the importer (that's you if it's your dog).|

Once you complete the form, you will receive a receipt which is good for entry or re-entry into the USA for up to six months.

This is good news and we'll continue to lobby to have this change made permanent and to possibly get the ban on importing dogs < six months of age lifted.

For those worried about their dogs travelling today, British Airways has not been impacted by the global IT outage, nor any airport where we have dogs going today. United, Delta and American Airlines have all grounded their flights around the globe. Lufthansa, SAS and KLM are disrupted also.

UK to USA exports from August 1:
This is the communication received from British Airways this morning. Basically it is business as usual with a little extra information to be provided by us (and customers):

“As some initial guidance to the sort of information we will be requesting will be:
• Confirmation all dogs are over six months of age
• Microchip numbers of all dogs travelling
• Confirmation they have a valid rabies vaccination (and if this was done in the USA or otherwise)
• Confirmation over which veterinary document you are using
• Has the dog been through a high-risk rabies country in the past six months
• Provide the CDC Dog Import Form Receipt
• Provide confirmation that for any foreign vaccinated dogs that have been through a high-risk rabies country, they have a reservation at an Animal Care Facility (note dogs in this category will only be able to be transported to ATL, IAD, JFK, LAX, MIA, and PHL)."

The CDC Import Form Receipt 'appears' to only be valid for up to 10 days, therefore we also know that the import receipt cannot be provided at the opening of the 14 day booking window, but it will need to be provided before the Ok To Forward is given.

We understand that some other airlines may have chosen to pause sending dogs to the USA – we are trying to avoid this and confident we won’t need to. I fully understand that these new regulations have been a challenge for all of us to get on-board with, so please work with us and allow us this extra time so that we can finalise changes to our requirements that are aimed at causing as little additional work for all of us, that still adhere to what we are required to do. I do not believe that once we communicate the changes, what we will be asking of you would not impact a booking made for 1st August on later, so long as the dog meets the entry requirements. “

We are sure that those airlines that have temporarily suspended live animal shipments will be back to usual service soon giving us greater choice of airlines, and better prices. The late release of the CDC Import Form complicated things a bit but it's here now! Onwards and upwards.

Any questions, you know where to find me.

Q&A:
Q. A question asked last week was: Does an Animal Health Certificate last for 3 years

A. No. An AHC is valid for entry to the EU for up to ten days from its date of issue, and for up to FOUR MONTHS for onward travel within the EU and/or for re-entry to GB. It is a single use document and can only be used once. So, unfortunately, every time you want to cross the channel with your dogs, you have to have a new AHC issued.

Send us your questions...someone else might have the same question and need an answer.

We have been very fortunate the last few weeks transporting dogs to the USA given the extremely hot weather. We only use airlines that have temperature controlled vehicles on the ground to safely transport dogs between the aircraft and cargo facilities so we have had no delays and no offloads at Heathrow. All dogs have arrived safely and as scheduled. In the very rare event of an off-load, we do not kennel dogs at Heathrow-based kennels. We collect the dogs ourselves so the dog has continuity of care in a familiar environment and with people they know. No dog gets stuck at Heathrow! We also personally deliver all dogs to their flights.

This lovely little lad is off to Canada this week. We have been singing "O Canada" to him - the national anthem of Canada - in preparation for his arrival.

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North, strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

This is the lovely Rhyl who is currently doing his quarantine time for Japan. He is a real character. Super enthusiastic, loves toys, loves people and is great with other dogs. He is learning to walk nicely on a leash but his favourite things are his toys and chasing his brother, Gus, who is also staying with us. Quite the happy pair. Rhyl is very easy care and very loveable....not to mention gorgeous, except when he's been playing in the mud! Thankfully, he also likes having a warm shower and being groomed.

One month to go before the USA changes their import rules. If you want to beat the rule change, book in now for travel in July.

29/06/2024

A quick note about the rule changes for dog exports from the UK to the USA starting August 1st. Dogs under 6 months of age are not permitted, no exceptions.

The new rules require (amongst other things) that veterinary records (including microchip number) for the previous 6 months be provided. This is to prove the age of the dog and can mean anything from an invoice with the dog's name and microchip number on it, a vaccination card with dog's name, microchip number, date of insertion of the microchip, date of vaccination - all signed and stamped (with the vets practice stamp), and a letter from the vet stating they saw/treated the dog (name and microchip) on a given date.

HOWEVER, if there are no veterinary records dating back six months, all is not lost. There is an option to provide a valid rabies serology titre test result from a government approved lab (APHA lab in the UK such as Weybridge). So you would rabies vaccinate at no younger than 12 weeks of age (similar to EU rules) and 30 days later, perform a rabies blood titre test.

Some tips for you if you are wanting to sell 6 month old+ into the USA:
1. Register the litter with your vet as soon after they are born as practical to verify date of birth.
2. When you microchip the pup(s) as per the legal requirement in the UK to do so, ensure you keep a record of the date of insertion of the microchip. Most vaccination cards have a place to put this information. Ask your vet or microchip inserter to sign the date of insertion on the card, or provide a separate letter to confirm the date of chipping. Make sure the microchip is inserted BEFORE the rabies vaccination. Most people microchip at 8 weeks of age or around the time of the first set of puppy vaccinations which predates the rabies vaccination.
3. When you rabies vaccinate, please ask your vet to SIGN and STAMP the vaccination card (with the veterinary practice stamp - usually has name of the practice, address and phone number).
4. If you choose the option to do a rabies serology test, make sure it is 30 'clear' days after the rabies vaccination. ie. day of vaccination is day zero, count 30 days and blood test on the 31st day.

DEFRA has yet to advise if an export health certificate (EHC) is being developed for the USA but even if it is, the 6 month vet records requirement stands. In short, get your dogs/pups registered with a vet practice and keep the paperwork!

The first ever litter of true working sheepdogs was born in India this week. The mother is Pia from Llanfarian Mirk (Hefin Jones) and Eryri Nan (Medwyn Evans) who was owned and trained by Angie (Driscoll), and Felix (Glynne Jones - Dunelle Choc x Graylees Pippa). Both Felix and Pai were shipped by us to Kathmandu, Nepal and from there to India.

Q&A Friday: I get asked a lot of questions about how many dogs can be transported to the European Union (EU) in one vehicle on EU pet passports/(UK) Animal Health Certificates. The simple answer is the maximum number is 5. There are two exceptions to this:
1. Over 5 and it is considered a commercial transport so you must complete an Export Health Certificate (EHC) for all dogs. When you use the EHC, though, you must also engage the services of a customs broker in the first country you enter in the EU, have the dogs vet checked at the point of entry and Traces completed.

2. You can also enter the EU with more than 5 dogs if you are going for training, an event or a competition, and provide evidence of this. All dogs must also be over 6 months of age. There is a special form to complete for this. It is relatively simple and we have often used this when people are travelling together to attend events like the European Nursery Championship and there are more than 5 dogs.

This lovely pup, Shadwell Dale, from Ricky and Meg Hutchinson is jetting away to Uruguay today. What a delight he has been to have for a month. Dale is flying to Madrid and then onto Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay where he is going to be a working dog. Sheep and cattle raising are two of Uruguay's most important economic activities and their main exports are wool, meat, and hides.

This cutie is off to Hong Kong today. He'll be the smartest little border collie in the territory. Hong Kong is very pet friendly. About 8% of households own a dog (which equates to just over 300,000 dogs - compared to 90 million in the USA). Sai Kung beaches and visiting pet friendly farms, such as the historic Pokfulam Farm, are two popular places for people to visit with their dogs.

This is a dog we recently shipped to Chile. He is now in Tierra del Fuego (the land of fire), which is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of the South American mainland, across the Strait of Magellan. Sheep herding started around the 1880s.
