🎄 🪓 🎅 Merry Christmas one and all!
Thank you all for your continued support and custom this year! I wish you all a merry Christmas and best wishes in the coming year!

Amidst the busy Christmas rush I’d like to leave you all with a Wheeler Christmas Eve tradition, the works of A A Milne - which I’ve read to young Rory a moment ago, as I had read for me.🎄

King John's Christmas

King John was not a good man --
He had his little ways.
And sometimes no one spoke to him
For days and days and days.
And men who came across him,
When walking in the town,
Gave him a supercilious stare,
Or passed with noses in the air --
And bad King John stood dumbly there,
Blushing beneath his crown.

King John was not a good man,
And no good friends had he.
He stayed in every afternoon...
But no one came to tea.
And, round about December,
The cards upon his shelf
Which wished him lots of Christmas cheer,
And fortune in the coming year,
Were never from his near and dear,
But only from himself.

King John was not a good man,
Yet had his hopes and fears.
They'd given him no present now
For years and years and years.
But every year at Christmas,
While minstrels stood about,
Collecting tribute from the young
For all the songs they might have sung,
He stole away upstairs and hung
A hopeful stocking out.

King John was not a good man,
He lived his live aloof;
Alone he thought a message out
While climbing up the roof.
He wrote it down and propped it
Against the chimney stack:
"TO ALL AND SUNDRY - NEAR AND FAR -
F. Christmas in particular."
And signed it not "Johannes R."
But very humbly, "Jack."

"I want some crackers,
And I want some candy;
I think a box of chocolates
Would come in handy;
I don't mind oranges,
I do like nuts!
And I SHOULD like a pocket-knife
That really cuts.
And, oh! Father Christmas, if you love me at all,
Bring me a big, red, india-rubber ball!"

King John was not a good man --
He wrote this message out,
And g*t him to this room again,
Descending by the spout.
And all that night he lay there,
A prey to hopes and fears.
"I think that's him a-coming now!"
(Anxiety bedewed his brow.)
"He'll bring one present, anyhow --
The first I had for years."

"Forget about the crackers,
And forget the candy;
I'm sure a box of chocolates
Would never come in handy;
I don't like oranges,
I don't want nuts,
And I HAVE got a pocket-knife
That almost cuts.
But, oh! Father Christmas, if you love me at all,
Bring me a big, red, india-rubber ball!"

King John was not a good man,
Next morning when the sun
Rose up to tell a waiting world
That Christmas had begun,
And people seized their stockings,
And opened them with glee,
And crackers, toys and games appeared,
And lips with sticky sweets were smeared,
King John said grimly: "As I feared,
Nothing again for me!"

"I did want crackers,
And I did want candy;
I know a box of chocolates
Would come in handy;
I do love oranges,
I did want nuts!
And, oh! if Father Christmas, had loved me at all,
He would have brought a big, red,
india-rubber ball!"

King John stood by the window,
And frowned to see below
The happy bands of boys and girls
All playing in the snow.
A while he stood there watching,
And envying them all ...
When through the window big and red
There hurtled by his royal head,
And bounced and fell upon the bed,
An india-rubber ball!

AND, OH, FATHER CHRISTMAS,
MY BLESSINGS ON YOU FALL
FOR BRINGING HIM
A BIG, RED,
INDIA-RUBBER
BALL!

An interesting procedure carried out “clogging” a laminitic horse. Working closely with the vets to x ray, we ensured correct angles were restored where rotation of the pedal bone had occurred - I screwed a therapeutic clog to the hoof capsule with dental impression between shoe and palmar aspect of the sole, while ensuring no sole pressure. With further dental impression applied to outside back part of the hoof, a hoof cast wraps around the foot adding vertical integrity and lateral stability to the hoof capsule.

Many thanks to the team at Vet3 Equine Care and Jonathan Cane.

Cold & Hot Shoeing - do you know which foot was shod cold? Left or right? 🤷🏼‍♂️
There are benefits to both methods of shoeing wether it be hot or cold, a farriers forge will heat a shoe to approximately 1800 Degrees Fahrenheit. This enables the shoe to be moved and shaped to fit the foot with ease, and any modifications like “clipping” shoes to be made. When a hot shoe is burnt on a foot a farrier can see true representation of “fit” and the burn ensures 100% foot - shoe contact. Amidst the smell and smoke it is a favourable method to fit shoes.
Cold shoeing also has its benefits, especially with young or “green” horses who may be a little unsure of the process. The shoe can still be shaped in a similar manner it will just take a little more hitting. Your environment is also to be taken into consideration, if shoeing in a box amongst bedding on a race yard it may not be a sensible idea to take a hot shoe in the box!
With 2022’s record breaking summer I took it upon myself to predominantly cold shoe for that period to reduce fire risk with our tinder surroundings and fire services under great stress!

Here’s interesting! A horse I have posted before. - note how that when shoes are removed it’s preferred spot, is to use this slight raise in the concrete surface to relax some discomfort in the caudal hoof area - in the second picture I have recreated this stance using a graduated pad.

Not only is it important to watch horses move, but sometimes things can be just as clear in a static observation as the horse adjusts to find comfort.

Before and after 📷 On the rare occasion where there really isn’t much to nail too.. a hoof cast is a go to 👌🏻 a similar material as to when a broken bone is healing, this provides a “false wall” to nail too. This will now be left on for a prolonged period, in hope to reveal enough foot growth upon removal to go back into standard shoeing.
