A very wet, windy and stormy sit for Max and Freddie earlier this month! We still braved the rain but it meant all the snuggles on the sofa were even more snuggly! Can’t wait to see this comedy duo again soon

With beautiful cold frozen winter mornings sneaking in, we’re often so happy the mud is hard under foot and that there is no washing of paws that we forget the problems grit and salt spread on the road can cause our four pawed friends!

Road grit and salt can cause some uncomfortable problems for our dogs when not washed off properly after a walk, such as

🐶skin irritation
🐶if digested it can be toxic
🐶and dehydration of your dogs skin

Ways to prevent this

❄️always wash your dogs paws with warm water after a walk
❄️be mindful of where you’re walking (sometimes it can be spread onto pavements)
❄️keep on top of grooming so it doesn’t get stuck in long fur
❄️watch out for cracked pads and potentially use a barrier wax to protect if out on pavements

Dogs and cold weather… (ft Odey snoring whilst being snug as a bug in a rug). We all know warm weather can be detrimental to man’s best friend, but can the cold be? The short answer is yes, however it is dependent on each dog and its breed and age. Dogs keep themselves warm with their fur and continuing blood supply to their paws. When cold, a dog might shiver, this is a way of helping it warm up. Breeds such as Labradors, GSD, Chow Chows, Pomeranians and boarder collies have a double coat. The coat underneath acts like a layer of insulation, the coat on top keeps water and dirt out of the insulation coat. As tempting as it is to put a nice jacket on a double coated dog, you could actually be doing more damage than you think, whilst the dog is running around they are heating up, having another layer on top of the fur is adding more warmth and then they can’t regulate their own heat which could lead to them overheating. Alternatively not putting a coat on a single coated dog could lead to them getting very cold and maybe even hypothermia, it’s all about dealing with the individual breed and how your dog reacts to the change in temperature. As we have accustomed them to our lovely warm houses their natural barriers will have changed so it’s good to keep that in mind. SIGNS OF HYPOTHERMIA, ❄️excessive shivering ❄️ shallow breath ❄️ loss of consciousness ❄️ cold to the touch ❄️ blue or pale gums. WHAT TO DO, ‼️SEEK MEDICAL ASSISTANCE ‼️ 🔥wrap them in blankets 🔥 keep them in the warm, next to a fire or radiator 🔥 could warm up blankets in the tumble dryer 🔥 fill bottles with warm water and place around the dog (with a blanket between the dog and the bottle) 🔥monitor their temperature, if it falls below 36.7°c seek immediate medical assistance!
