Benefits of being part of a dog training community
Dog training can be a solitary endeavour, having to put the time in when ‘normal’ people will be watching TV, or down the pub, or even chilling out on the sofa… It takes commitment, discipline, patience and passion. It doesn’t matter what you are training for, it takes work.
However, having a community of people to support you and be part of, can make a massive difference.
There are so many benefits to training your dog with a group of people or, what I specifically refer to as the villagers.
These people are going to help you, on your chosen path, support you and give you feedback, encouragement and a shoulder to lean on when needed.
🐶 This community can be in person, or online. Modern technology has allowed us various platforms where we can form communities, which can substitute in person access.
🐶 Find a community where you are accepted and embraced.
🐶 Having an extra pair of hands or an extra pair of eyes, to give you feedback will always be beneficial. Communities can provide exactly this.
🐶 The right community should be a safe space, where you can be without judgement. Sometimes you may want to vent your frustration or be vulnerable… in the right community, that’s ok.
🐶 Being part of a community, can build your self confidence up, as you are able to contribute to the community and lift others up.

Have you ever heard ‘He always does it at home’…If I had a £1 for every time I have heard that phrase in my career, I would now be on my own private Island, with my Ferrari on standby and a private jet!!It’s the most common struggle people have with their training. And the solution is actually relatively simple.Dogs are so influenced by the environment they are in, which makes it harder for them to transfer information learned in one environment, to another. As part of your training, it is critical to take your dog to lots of different locations, and apply the same criteria and ‘rules’. This initially starts with getting your dog to respond to your reinforcement processes. Here is a checklist for generalising.🐶 Can they switch on?🐶 Can they play in a new location?🐶 Can they take food?🐶 Can they switch between the two things?🐶 Can they offer simple behaviours?Using this simple checklist, allows you to grow understanding and reliability in any environment.
I have been training dogs for over 30yrs, and handler literally thousands of dogs. I have helped people reach the elite level of dog sports, and helped countless people improve their relationship and lives with their dogs. When I meet a dog with an issue, there is often a core problem underlying the symptoms. This normally relates to a basic need not being met.Every dog has essential needs to live their best life.I talk about this in terms of the 5 E’s.🐶 Education 🐶 Enrichment 🐶 Entertainment 🐶 Exercise🐶 Emotional StabilityOften, behavioural problems are the result of one of more of these things, being missing or out of balance. The goal is to have all of these in harmony. If you have a dog with a Reactivity issue, anxiety issue, aggression issue, separation anxiety issue… or whatever your dog’s challenge is, review these 5 E’s and see if you can see where there is something lacking or missing.Work on that, and you’ll see a major improvement.Kamal Fernandez
Teaching your puppy to settle is one of the most beneficial life skills you can ever have. Here are some simple tips to help achieve this crucial behaviour! 🐶 Ensure you reinforce and ‘capture’ any moments when your puppy offers calm, settled behaviour around the home. This can be by scattering some treats in their bed, or simply a belly rub or praise. Ensure you acknowledge any behaviour you like and want to be repeated. 🐶 Build duration gradually by increasing the time between feeding. Start off with a few seconds, and ask for longer as they develop understanding. Don’t rush this process, to create a solid settle.🐶 Add distractions gradually. You are aiming for your puppy to settle in any situation, so add simple distractions and reinforce good choices. 🐶 Set them up for success, by using a comfortable bed which they will want to settle on. It may seem obvious, but making the bed or mat comfortable, will entice the dog to want to lay on it, making your job easier! 🐶 Start with your puppy straight away, to make your life easier. Don’t ask for too much, and be patient. Puppies are babies, they are learning and developing, so take your time. For more information on raising your puppy, check out the link in our bio and join the Ultimate Puppy course today!!

Loose lead walking is probably one of the most popular skills people want their dog to have, but also probably the most difficult to attain, because it takes a massive amount of consistency and commitment to achieve! Here are 3 simple tips to help you achieve Loose Lead Walking excellence! 🐕 Start your training in environments with minimal distractions, this can be in your living, kitchen or even bathroom. This will set your dog up for success and mean they will get lots of reinforcement for the correct behaviour, before increasing the challenges. 🐕 Use a harness and a flat collar to discriminate to your dog, when they are required to walk on a loose lead and when they are able to investigate the environment freely. This will give your dog clarity and help them succeed. 🐕 Keep your session short and sweet. When learning, little and often but a few minutes at a time is best practice. This keeps the success rate up and prevents the dog losing interest.
