Hi, I'm Laura. I am an IMDT dog trainer living in Scotland with my 17 year old twin girls and our 4 dogs - Siri the Dalmatian, Mungo the spaniel, Dexter the chihuahua and Emba the pomchi. I own and run Dog Owner Training School - Laura Carter IMDT . I wrote the book The Vet Says Rest after helping many of my clients with their dogs on restricted exercise due to illness or injury. The vets do an amazing job with the medical side, but it can be very stressful for owners when their normally energetic dog can't go out for his normal walks. There is so many more ways to entertain your dog on rest than with just toys filled with food.

A hard plastic cone is just one way of stopping your dog from licking and nibbling at a wound.

Many owners don't realise that there are other options including surgical suits and inflatable cones.

Discover the kindest way to introduce your dog to new equipment in my book The Vet Says Rest available from Amazon.

What a fabulous review!!!

📖 BOOK REVIEW 📚

Earlier than anticipated because I read it in one sitting.

I joined the group The Vet Says Rest when Winnie was spayed. We had 2 weeks of trying to keep a high energy dog calm and stimulated during her recovery.

I am not a stranger to enrichment and during her crate time she had stuffed Kongs, lick mats, snuffle mats and new toys to keep her brain active - including a mango toy that I highly recommend 🥭

Despite all this she was bored and frustrated and had bursts of energy when out of the crate. She began yawning, lip licking and paw licking when crated - all signs of stress 😢It was an emotional and tiring fortnight.

Now, having been told that the recovery from TPLO is 6 weeks, I knew I needed more help.

I saw in the group that Laura (the author) had written a book. It arrived yesterday.

So first of all it is very easy to read and digest. As I said, I completed it in one evening. Laura’s style is straightforward with no jargon making the information easy to understand and apply.

Not only can the tools and techniques be used for a dog in this situation, they can easily be applied to any situation where your dogs needs to be calm, confined, enriched or even just to build the bond between dog and owner.

Laura advocates putting work in before your dog ever has a planned surgery or accident - to set them up for success should it ever happen. Just as we do in our training, she recommends getting your dog used to a full body exam so it is less stressful should an emergency happen.

She also recommends all pet owners do a dog first aid course which of course I wholeheartedly agree with ⛑️

The book is full of useful ways to engage all of your dogs senses, sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.

I also loved that she acknowledges the emotional strain on owners who are worried, often tired and sad for their dog who doesn’t understand why they can’t do what they are normally allowed to i.e. go on walks, climb the stairs or use the sofa.

Finally, there are helpful QR codes linked to videos that demonstrate the tools and techniques in the book so great for a visual learner like me.

I recommend this book to anyone with a dog in their life, whether they are due to be on rest or not.

So today is day one of my two dogs learning some new things and I can’t wait!

*This is a completely independent review. I neither know Laura nor have I received any incentive to write this
