The poor garden tortoise. 🐢
The poor garden tortoise was imported to this county in their thousands, crammed in crates and sold for next to nothing, to people who wanted a pet.
Well this poor pet tortoise has had a poor existence in the UK for decades.
Every winter stuck in a box or digging down in the garden to try and hopefully survive the winter hibernation until spring arrived with warmer weather. Then it’s plonked in the garden to try and survive until its hibernation time again.
Well things have evolved and WE must change the way we look after our pet tortoises. Average life span is expected to be 120 years old, not many of the old imported tortoise survive today in the UK.
We must improve their lifestyles urgently, climate change has a lot to answer for wetter colder winters.
Every tortoise needs extra heat and uv, if the tortoise is under 10 degrees it could slow down enough to go back into hibernation minimum day time temp optimum should be 15 degrees or more. This encourages tortoise to eat and digest food.
So this means we need to supply supplementary heat and uv.
During the nice sunny weather no added heat is required only during the inclement weather.
I hear you say oh! My Nan didn’t and her tortoise lived for years without, well yes they survived and not thrived, but l bet nans tortoise is no longer with us.
We have a duty of care to make these so called garden tortoise thrive.
The internet has taught all so much we must now implement it, NOT just ignore the needs of our shelled friends.
Adult tortoise needs a good size garden, it doesn’t need to be penned in, but it does require a safe environment to live.
It will need to have a secure house for the night as rat attacks appear to be on the increase. Not just rats but other predators to.
If you have a pond make sure tortoise can’t fall in it.
If you have a dog please, please be very careful as it doesn’t matter how good your dog is they do see a tortoise as an object to chew on.
If you have a greenhouse add a heat bulb and uv, plus a nice warm dry form of housing, a wooden kennel in the greenhouse would be fine, and add the lamp in the greenhouse so tortoise can bask if it wants to.
If you have a shed or similar you could do the same thing by adding a kennel or similar for tortoise and again lamp/uv to bask under.
Fresh water is a must and a good weed/flower based diet.
Common sense, it’s not rocket science these animals need our help to thrive.
