Check out my blog post

Puppy biting or mouthing is a behaviour that I often notice dog owners struggling with. When those sharp teeth are grabbing your hands or feet, there’s no denying that it is frustrating and even painful. HOWEVER, puppy biting is totally normal and can be managed by understanding their needs and re...

What’s Up, Pup? A fantastic children’s book which illustrates how dogs communicate using body language.

This is certainly a fun read to help your children understand how dogs express themselves.

This book was written by Kersten Hamilton and beautifully illustrated by đŸŸ

I had the pleasure of meeting Zeus âšĄïž!! A lovely 11 week old Hovewart with equally lovely owners.

Did you know that Hovewarts were originally bred to guard our homes and later developed to track and rescue?

We discussed the importance of keeping working dogs mentally stimulated. A stimulated dog is a happier dog and a happier dog is less likely to start developing unwanted behaviours!

JUMPING 🆙

Are you having issues with your dog jumping up when greeting people at the door?

In this picture, I was greeted by my whippet ‘nephew’ and as you can tell by my face and reaction, digging his claws into my chest was pretty painful.

Particularly for children or the elderly jumping up can be unpleasant, intimidating and could even cause injury!

SO
how to best react in this scenario?

Well, first, don’t give your dog any attention, even eye contact, as this means “please carry on”.

Second, don’t scream or make a scene out of it, as just like my first point, your dog will think this is fun and you are asking him to carry on.

And finally, always reward your dog when you see all four đŸŸ on the floor.

Does your dog always come back when called?

Here are a fews tips for a successful recall:

1. Practise having your dog coming back to you away from distractions.
2. Make it fun to come back to you by playing games with your dog.
3. Always reward your dog for giving you eye contact.
4. Call your dog often on a walk, not just when it’s time to go home.

When teaching loose lead walking, what is the first thing your dog should learn
? 🩼

Eye contact!

Why? If your dog is looking at you then he can’t be pulling on the lead at the same time.

Sometimes, starting with smaller steps can help you get to your end goal quicker.

Two years go I made the decision to change career by pursuing a profession which combines my love for dogs and my passion for helping people. Dog training isn’t just about training dogs but also teaching people how to train their dogs. Fast forward to today and I cannot believe I am holding this certificate. Thank you to my mentor .behaviourist , for believing in me. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for all her help and support. This is just the beginning of an exciting journey. đŸŸ

This is a dog park in Tel Aviv, Israel. This is a safe place, gated and shaded by trees so that dogs can socialise and play while owners can sit and relax without having to worry about their dogs running away.

HAND TARGET ✋

You may wonder why teaching a hand target is useful for you and your dog.

First, it’s a great way to get the kids involved in trick training as it’s pretty straightforward. You show your hand to your dog who then needs to touch it with its nose. Second, it’s a great tool to get your dogs attention, for example, if in the park and you want your dog to come back to you.

DOG BREEDS đŸ© 🐕 🩼🐕‍đŸŠș

Do you ever think about what your dog was originally bred for?

Toffee is a labradoodle and absolutely loves to jump in the water. The labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle. Poodles were bred for water retrieving so no wonder why she can’t stay away from the water!

When you’re thinking about fun/mental stimulation activities with your dog, I would suggest to always think about the original breed. It was certainly a fun outing for both myself and Toffee!

How to teach your kids to safely approach an unknown dog 🩼

1. Ask the owner
2. If the owner says yes, stand sideways and let the dog come to you

Not all dogs are comfortable being stroked all the time. Watch out for stress signs that may tell you to keep your distance such as lip licking and head turning away. If the dog seems interested he will probably make the first move.

Let’s talk doggie language đŸ¶

Dogs don’t speak English (or any other language) so how do they communicate with us? By using body language (visual cues)!

Understanding how dogs communicate will not only help your furry friend feel safe navigating through our human world but will also help you build a relationship based on trust.

Doggie language by Lili Chin best describes the signs to look out for. This book also has great illustrations which makes it an easy read even for kids!

How to kiss a dog 💋

Humans express love and affection with kisses. For our dogs, on the other hand, this is a not a natural behaviour. From a dog’s perspective, bringing our face close to their faces may be perceived as threatening.

So the best way for a child to show their affection is to kiss their own hand and then stroke the dog’s back from collar to tail.

🐕 WALKING ON A LEAD 🐕

Why do dogs pull on the lead? Because they walk faster than we do and think that this is the best way to get to where they want to be quicker.

Getting your dog to walk nicely on the lead and focus on you not only will ensure your walks are more enjoyable but also safer.

I often hear: “my dog is being naughty
”

Dog owners see their puppies/dogs going to the toilet in the wrong place, chewing their furniture, digging in their garden, and so on, and label their dogs as naughty.

Dogs behave a certain way/do certain things not because they want to annoy us but because they just need better guidance from us.

A dog who goes to the toilet in the wrong place perhaps needs more toilet training or hasn’t been taken out at the right time.

A dog who is chewing the furniture might just be bored or teething. Some dogs like to dig because they were bred for that behaviour and because it is fun!

KIDS and DOGS 🐕

Having a dog and children has many advantages, and all the work you put into training in the beginning will pay off as your puppy grows up. Your dog will likely form an incredible bond with your children, and in turn, pet ownership teaches children about responsibility, provides a sense of security and improves their emotional intelligence.
