Please bear with us (pun intended) for the next couple of weeks, as our geriatric boy is undergoing a procedure next week - a last chance at making him comfortable.

On top of that, we are incredibly busy with summer holiday care, and spinning a lot of plates!

The show will go on, as it always does, and we should be all up to date with any admin until the end of the month. If you need anything urgently, we'll get back to you when we can.

It’s disappointing that the irresponsible actions of some have made this decision necessary. However, it is the right thing in order to protect our most faithful companions and those around them across our area. Grateful to Hannah & officers at RBBC for the considered way in which they’ve approached this issue.

🐶 Revised dog controls in Reigate & Banstead to limit dog walkers to four dogs 🐶

Today a new borough-wide rule, limiting a dog walker to four dogs, has been introduced by Reigate and Banstead Borough Council, following a review of its dog public space protection orders (PSPOs).

Reducing the number of dogs a person can walk at any one time from six to four received support from eight out of ten survey respondents (out of a total of 492). The change was proposed following ongoing concerns raised by residents about dog walkers being able to control groups of dogs.

The limit of four is recommended by the RSPCA (England & Wales) and pet business insurers.

A five-week public consultation, which took place last autumn, received 561 responses and showed high levels of support for the existing borough-wide PSPOs. More than 92% of the 513 responses agreed that dogs must be kept under control on a lead in designated dogs-on-lead areas or if asked by an authorised officer and that dog walkers are responsible for clearing up after dog fouling.

Existing orders for some specified areas, such as parks, playgrounds and recreation areas, where dogs are either not allowed or must be on a lead, will also be renewed, along with the introduction of some new areas:

New play areas in Westvale Park, Horley, will be dog exclusion areas.

The area of Earlswood Lakes where dogs will need to be kept on a lead has been extended to include the grassed area to the west of the lower lake up to the footpath leading from the carpark.

Dog PSPOs give the police and Council powers to issue fixed penalty notices to anyone responsible for a dog that they reasonably believe is in breach of the PSPO.

Signage is being updated across the Borough and in open spaces where dog-on-lead orders are present. This allows the Joint Enforcement Team to issue Fixed Penalty Notices to dog owners or walkers who do not adhere to the imposed orders.

Cllr Hannah Avery Executive Member for Neighbourhood Services said:

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy walking about the borough or visiting our parks and play areas, whether they have a dog or not. These PSPOs will help us to balance the needs of all, including the many responsible dog owners and their dogs that rely on our beautiful green spaces.”

Full information about the dog PSPOs can be found on the Council’s website, along with a report on the consultation findings - www.reigate-banstead.gov.uk/dogs-pspo.

It is sweltering today, and due to be around 5°C hotter tomorrow! 🌡🔥🥵

We won't be walking tomorrow to keep everyone safe and well, as heatstroke is a big deal!

Heat stroke in dogs is almost always preventable, but it's critical to know when they're at risk. Our infographic explains when is it too hot to walk a dog.

We hope everyones pups are doing OK with the thunder & lightening! ⛈️⚡️

If anyone remembers as far back to when we had our little elderly rescue Terrier, Peach, but he would always sense a storm approach, perhaps from the change in air pressure.

Younger rescue, George, is somewhat worried, however, she knows she's safe, so isn't fretting too much, but we are there to comfort her.

Don't forget; you CAN comfort your dog, as fear is an emotion, and we can't 'reinforce' emotions by comforting!

OMD (oh my dog)!

Bear's birthday cake has just arrived ready for Sunday and it looks epic!!! 😱🎂🎉

I won't assemble until the big day, so it's resting in the wine fridge! 😅 I can't say we've had such an amazing cake for ourselves, but, hey, it's Bear's 17th birthday!

If any Doggu Day Care clients would like to join us at Gatwick Aviation Museum on Sunday, let us know! It's dog-friendly, and there's a nature trail, too.

Whilst all this planning is going on, Bear is blissfully unaware!

WHAT THE F?

Recognising stress responses in dogs.

Fight or flight are well known reactions to fear or stress, but these other “F” words are also important to understand and be aware of as they may not always be so obvious.

Freeze, Fawn, Fidget or Fool around are also responses to stress or fear and are also commonly seen in people.

Some dogs may have a genetic predisposition to one type of response while some react based on previous experience - what has worked for them before or what hasn’t. Some dogs have different reactions depending on the specific context.

Recognising and taking note of situations or circumstances where these responses are seen is important in understanding how our dogs are feeling.

When we recognise a fear or a stress response, we are able to intervene and advocate for our dogs.

I wrote this blog a while back, regarding how to stay safe whilst out walking our dogs.

Feel free to have a read!

With all of the dog thefts and attacks on walks around the UK over recent years, I thought I'd write a blog with some ideas of how we can stay safe whilst out and about with our 4 legged friends. I'm going to be coming at it from a self awareness and self defence basis, as I train in a modern, defen...

🐍🐍🐍 It's World Snake Day! 🐍🐍🐍

In the UK, we share a habitat with:
🐍 Adders
🐍 Grass Snakes
🐍 Smooth Snakes

A few years ago, someone was bitten by an adder whilst walking their dog at Earlswood Lakes in Redhill.

These animals don't want to attack, but if they feel threatened and we or our dog gets too close, they may feel the need to.

Take care, as warmer weather brings snakes out to bask, so wear shoes which cover your ankles and stick to the clear paths.

ℹ To more about our native snakes here: https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/how-identify/identify-snakes

🚶To have a chance at seeing some in person, pay a visit to British Wildlife Centre in Lingfield, particularly on a sunny day.

They, understandably, don't allow dogs to visit, but it's a great place to educate children about British native wildlife.

They get to interact with a stable group of friends, and form incredibly strong bonds.

🐾 Why Socialising Your Dog is Crucial! 🌟

Socialisation isn't just about fun playdates—it's essential for your dog's wellbeing and development! Here’s why:

1️⃣ Behavioural Development: Socialising helps dogs learn appropriate behaviours and communication skills with other dogs and humans.

2️⃣ Confidence Building: Positive interactions build confidence and reduce anxiety in new environments and situations.

3️⃣ Prevention of Behavioural Issues: Well-socialised dogs are less likely to develop fear or aggression towards unfamiliar people or animals.

4️⃣ Health Benefits: Regular socialisation can improve mental stimulation and overall happiness, contributing to a healthier, more balanced dog.

5️⃣ Quality of Life: Social dogs enjoy a richer, more fulfilling life with increased opportunities for play, exercise, and companionship.

Let's prioritise socialisation for a happier, healthier canine companion! 🐶❤️

We're planning on doing another charity donation of any unwanted dog items, such as beds, accessories, treats, food, etc.

Please have a check through your cupboards and drawers this week, and if you find anything in good condition which your dog no longer needs, please give to us by this Friday 12th July, and we will add to our donation collection.

It's a great way to have a little clear out at home, as well as supporting some well deserving dogs in rescue locally!

Please ensure your dog day care or boarder (home or commercial/kennel) has a license from the local council!

Any form of the above is a licensable activity, and it's illegal to provide these without one.

We are proud to maintain a five star, highest rating license, which requires a lot of hard work, dedication, and not to mention pages of paperwork!

Leonie Smethurst, 45, ran Dudley Waggins Limited without a licence for more than five years from Rivington Pike Cottage.

For the month of July, we're running a Virtual Dog Show for our clients, with fun classes to challenge you & your dog, strengthen your bond, and show off the hard work you've done with them!

🐶 Our 1st class this week is the Sit Challenge! 🐶

Video 🤳 your dog doing as many 'sits' as they can in 15 seconds!

It's as simple as that! 👍

The Rules:

1. Video your dog doing as many 'sits' they can in 15 seconds.
2. Your dog's rear end must make full contact with the floor.
3. They must come back up to a stand in between.
4. It doesn't matter if they move around in between.
5. You CAN use treats, hand signals, and other cues!
6. It doesn't matter if your time is under 15 seconds, but it must not go over, otherwise any 'sits' after 15 seconds will not be counted!
7. You must use force-free handling - no pushing or grabbing, but we know you couldn't do that!
8. Children are welcome to get involved, but if their face is visible in the video, we won't be able to share your entry, for safeguarding reasons, but it will be included.
9. By submitting your video, you are giving us permission to share on social media.
10. Entries must be in by 6pm on Friday 12th July, and judging will take place over the weekend.

When cats & dogs live in harmony! 😽💘🐶

Our cats are, of course, very well socialised with dogs! Our youngest, Pepé, is still gaining his confidence, but getting there.

When dogs stay with us, they get to live as part of our family, which includes hanging out with our feline friends, if possible! 😄

04/07/2024

It's 'grass seed season'!

We'll remove any we find on your dog, but please check them when they're home!
