Winter poses several hazards for pets, including the following:

1. Cold Temperatures

Frostbite: Pets, especially those with thin fur or exposed skin (ears, tails, paw pads), are at risk.

Hypothermia: Prolonged exposure to cold can lead to life-threatening conditions.

2. Snow and Ice

Slippery Surfaces: Pets can slip and injure themselves on icy sidewalks or roads.

Ice Balls: Snow and ice can accumulate between paw pads, causing pain or frostbite.

3. Antifreeze Poisoning

Ethylene glycol in antifreeze tastes sweet but is highly toxic to pets. Even small amounts can be fatal if ingested.

4. Salt and Deicers

Salt and chemical deicers can irritate paw pads and skin, causing burns or cracks. If ingested during grooming, they may lead to stomach upset or poisoning.

5. Indoor Hazards

Space Heaters: Pets might knock them over, causing burns or fires.

Fireplaces: Pets can get too close and burn themselves.

6. Reduced Exercise

Pets may gain weight if regular exercise routines are disrupted by cold weather.

7. Hidden Dangers in Cars

Cold Cars: Vehicles can become dangerously cold, especially for pets left inside.

Engine Dangers: Outdoor cats may crawl under car hoods for warmth. Starting the engine without checking can injure or kill them.

Prevention Tips

Limit outdoor exposure during extreme cold.

Use pet-safe deicers and wipe paws after walks.

Dress pets in appropriate winter clothing.

Keep antifreeze and holiday plants out of reach.

Check car engines before starting in cold weather.
