As well as doing some loading practice with 4yo Casper, he also had a little trip out in the wagon to the river 💦💦💦💦
It was his first time in, so to build his confidence, I long reigned him in first, then got on and rode him in. He went straight in and even had a splash about, being super confident!
We then had a quick hack around the block, herded some lose calves🐮🐮, then back through the river, loaded up and went home for some grub!!
All in all a productive day for him!!!
I will always take the horses in the river a couple of days before going xc schooling or to an event. You don’t want to waste time in your paid lesson or at an event trying to get them in the water!!!!
🦄🦄Some loading practice with Casper today🦄🦄
Even if you are just practicing loading,
I would always put the boots and bandages on so they get used to them, especially a younger horse who may never have had them on before.
If you are planing on taking your horse to shows or out on your own, it’s important that they are confident loading and standing on the wagon on their own before you get there!
You don’t want to get to your first show and, as well as having the added stress of the show, having your horse being unruly on the wagon or trailer.
At home you can tie a hay net up and leave them on for half an hour, whilst you muck out or take them to a local arena hire.
I also sometimes will find a good place to park locally with the wagon and just take them on a hack near home. Load them up, go down the road in the wagon, go for a nice hack, then back on the wagon home. It’s free and good to get them out and about in a stress free environment!!

Training mounting block practice with Casper!
You should train your horse to be happy and confident to be mounted so you can get on anywhere if needs must!
Casper is now confident with the step, so I will start to introduce some different places to get on him in the coming weeks!
Train every step in every area of horsemanship, so in time you have a confident happy horse that you can enjoy and do absolutely anything with!

4yo Warrior has been for a play in the water today.
The kennels ride is one of my favourite places to take the younger horses to see how they react to different situations.
It’s entirely free and includes the following:
A spooky river. If you can get your horse in there for a paddle, the water on the xc won’t be a problem.
Some grates across the bridleway, which are similar to a ditch out on xc.
Gates to practice opening and shutting. Depending on the horse, I may get off to practice getting on and off out hacking.
An uphill field to practice cantering in a straight line. I usually would change leg lead half way up.
Building sites, so plenty of noise and some spooky banners and signs.
It really has all the above and more and is a fantastic free facility to see how sensitive your horse can be to its spooky surroundings.
