Was lovely to get back to Straw bale searches yesterday.

We will be running regular classes and 1-2-1 sessions for these types of fun searches.

You can use any scent your dog has been trained on, you can use food or toys….it is all about your dog having fun and getting to use that superpower they have…..SNIFFING!

Did you know that your dog see’s the world through their nose?

As humans our sensory experience is dominated by sight and sound primarily and our dogs is by scent.

Scent is their super power and they collect so much information from sniffing. Just like we may see or hear something on social media, emails or in books etc, that gives us information, dogs will get all of that from scent. A dog’s sense of smell is up to 100,000 stronger than ours which helps them pick up much more than us and is why we can not understand why they can spend so long sniffing a tree, bush or an area of grass etc.

For dogs, each sniff tells a story, bringing their world into focus in a way that’s just as vivid as the one we would see with our eyes!
Letting them sniff is an essential part of their life and wellbeing, so please let them sniff.

Yesterday was week 1 of our new courses to help with loose lead walking, recall and better engagement/communication between our dogs and us humans. It is so important to remember we are two different species and need to work on understanding our dogs and why they do things and likewise for the dogs to work out what it is we would like from them.

We worked on focus, focus on the move, relaxing around other dogs, reward placement, when to reinforce, what to reinforce and how often. The dogs and humans all did so well and the sun even came out to play.

Very mixed bag weather wise this week. We tailor all sessions to the conditions and always check humidity levels especially at this time of the year, lots of walk breaks and water stops as always.

It is always about the time spent with your dog not the distance travelled or time it took.

In our world I think it is very easy to forget that everything is not as easy as flicking a switch to make something work the way we want it to. Computer not working..."Have you tried switching it off and then on, usually does the trick" for example.

Take your time with your dog, remember they do not speak our language and that they really are trying to understand but it is not always that easy for them. Ever tried to learn a new language and communicate whilst on holiday only to end up pointing at what you want because you are not being understood. Imagine how our dogs must feel at times. So, relax, take your time and work with your dog and you will find your way.

We do love these autumn mornings. Meadow and field checks have been carried out and Bert has signed them off for all of today’s activities and training.

Well done Bert.

It was a busy weekend and a first for us as well. We had our normal training classes, canicross, canitalk and our first Skelly-WagFEST.

Skelly-WagFEST was born out of a comment made after a class when it was said “you guys spend so much time here you may as well camp”! Well hours later the decision was made to have a special event at the field.

On Saturday we held our event, we had scentwork, straw bale searching, recall and straw bale scurrying, trailing/tracking, rally, we had a fun fun dog show, a bbq, chats around the fire and camped out! Nothing like starting small!

We created an event that really centred on the dogs and created chill out pods if the dogs needed them, walks around the meadow, lots of breaks and space.

The Fun Dog Show was not the usual stuff like best in show or best rescue etc, every dog came first as we knew the dogs and they got their own special write up and certificates. Some dogs could not attend as it would have been too much for them so they got to take part virtually.

The photos will not do the day justice as it was amazing to see such happy dogs and their humans.

Skelly-WagFEST 2024 has exceeded much more than we dared believe it could. Thank you everyone.

Sorry for the dogs we did not get photos of, please feel free to post in comments any that you took. In fact those who attended please feel free to post in comments your photos.

Here’s to Skelly-WagFEST 2025, It’s ALL about the dogs!
