PUPPY BEHAVIOUR 101 - WHAT TO THINK OF 🐾

A puppy’s breed – some breeds that are bred for bite work will engage in mouthing behaviour therefore this is something that is to be expected. Mouthing is a different behaviour to reactivity.

A puppy’s health – if a puppy is in pain or has a health condition, this can contribute to them being more nervous or hypervigilant.

Duration of the problem – if the behaviour has been practiced a lot then this can take longer to overcome. Considering the specific triggers for the behaviour is key so you can look at when it happens and what may be maintaining it.

Environment – Considering who, what and where the behaviour happens with is a key part of identifying the challenge. It may just happen in a busy place where there are lots of people/dogs.

Equipment used and training used – prong/chain collars can cause intense discomfort and pain and lead a dog to behave in a reactive way.

Health and safety – Not leaving the puppy alone with vulnerable adults including older people or children is important as bite’s can be more severe due to thinner skin/risks to bites on the face in the case of children (as sometimes a childs face is the same position as a dog’s mouth.

🐾
Factors to include are also:

The situation the behaviour occurs

How often it occurs

How intense the behaviour is (what level of bite is shown)

What is occurring in the instance that the behaviour happens in

What happens after the behaviour occurs (what everyone’s response is)

🐾The triggers that lead up to the behaviour

What do cats and dogs have in common?

Well, cats are a prey and predator species which means it is not in their interest to show pain. Showing pain can make them look vulnerable and they hide it well. Dogs can also hide pain. The motivation to perform a behaviour such as jumping to grab a ball or running after a squirrel is higher than their propensity to pain. Pets have evolved to have basic emotional concepts such as seeking and play, sometimes that desire is so strong, that they will keep moving despite pain. It’s a bit like us having a bad shoulder, taking a paracetamol, and still going to our go ape session, because we want to see friends. It’s imperative that if pain relief is used that we don’t use it as an excuse to let our pets run around and potentially do damage – they can really hurt themselves and they will feel the pain when it wears off.

What can cats teach us about dogs.. quite alot!

Training methods that use pain, fear and force can lead a dog to skip steps in the ladder of aggression. Studies suggest it leads to dogs that are more aggressive, unpredictable and harder to read.

Just as cats can hide stress by sleeping a lot and not interacting, and not grooming or playing dogs can shut down in an environment they are scared to be in and they can’t escape from. It may appear that they are calm or behaving well but actually they are internalising stress which could lead to an intense outburst. Just as dogs go into fight mode (attack), flight mode (run), they can resort to freeze mode too - this can look like they are calm but actually they are scared.
