Ignoring allergy signs can lead to flare-ups, skin infections, and long-term discomfort for your pet. Repeated scratching and licking damage the skin barrier, making things worse.

The sooner you pinpoint the cause, the quicker you and your vet can take steps to reduce exposure, manage symptoms, and plan effective long-term care.

It’s not just about comfort — it’s about protecting your pet’s long-term health.

💬 Not sure if your pet's symptoms could be allergy-related? We’re here to help: [email protected]

I don't normally share other businessess, and obviously this is a bit of a sensitive one.

I have had the pleasure of working alongside Laura and know that she will offer a remarkable service in difficult times. Sadly as pet caregivers we will all likely have to make the difficult call at some point. Some vet practices just don't have the facilities to offer Euthanasia at home. As somebody who had to go through the tough call a few years back, and likely again at some point soon with my elderly Husky. Its nice to know we have options when the difficult time comes. I can honestly say that it is often a much more pleasant time for the animal, and often their care givers to consider their final moments at home.

An independent, home visit veterinary service, available from the 9th April; providing compassionate, gentle care, in the comfort of your pets home.

Covering Liverpool and the surrounding areas.

This Week’s Myth:
"Dogs with arthritis should avoid exercise to prevent further joint damage."

FACT:
While high-impact activities can worsen arthritis, regular low-impact exercise is essential to maintain joint mobility and muscle strength.
Activities like short, gentle walks, swimming, and controlled physical therapy can help reduce stiffness and improve overall comfort.

Always tailor exercise to your dog's individual needs and consult a veterinarian for the best activity plan.

Welcoming new comers to the Building Resilience crew, Mitzi and Chester. Both did very well in their first training session today. Chester loved the cheese paste so much he saved a little bit on his chin for after I left 🤭🥰

Interesting bit of trivia.

have a small fold of skin on their outer ear? 🐱 This small fold of skin is also known as 'Henry’s pocket', but its formal name is a 'cutaneous marginal pouch'. The reason for the evolution of this feature is still unclear, but it is thought to assist in filtering sounds to improve detection of higher pitch or frequency, which is useful for cats when they are engaging in predatory behaviours, such as hunting prey.

It could also help the ear to fold flat against the cat's head. Cats may flatten and rotate their ears when they are feeling protective emotions such as fear, anxiety and/or pain. Cats actually have thirty-two individual muscles in each ear that allow them to move their outer ears independently of each other, and because of the large concentration of muscles within a small area, the ears have a diverse range of movement, allowing each ear to rotate 180 degrees!

Welcoming Teddy to Building Resilience training tribe this week. I have been working with Teddy behind the scenes for a few months, addressing his anxiety and behaviour problems. He is making good progress so now is the time to add in some formal training.

Teddy has some bad habits that we are going to have to work hard to alter, but he did amazing on his 1st session.

As part on my registration to PACT/ABTC and to the RCVS as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). I have to complete 15 hours of Continued Professional Development (CPD) each year to make sure that I am practising in the most effective and upto date way possible. You can rest assured that I will only use proven methods which are modern and have an evidence base to back them up.

Not all trainers are the same! You should be able to ask your trainer what recent studies they have completed to stay upto date and current. Anybody who wants the best for you and your pet should want to open up these conversations. If you know me, you know my passion is behaviour and I have probably burnt your ears with something behaviour related at some point.

Love getting my nerd on 🤓

😴 Did You Know? Dogs Need Around 16 Hours of Sleep Each Day 😴

Sleep is crucial to your dog’s emotional and physical well-being. Inadequate rest can lead to emotional distress, and even dogs who seem fine can struggle in busy environments due to chronic sleep deprivation.

For our more energetic pups, reducing activity can be incredibly beneficial. Many dogs who appear fully awake are actually not getting enough rest to truly recharge.

💤 Try shorter, calmer walks.
💤 Create quiet spaces like their crate or bed for relaxation.
💤 Give them time to unwind after stressful events (like a vet visit).

Supporting your dog’s sleep routine helps improve their overall well-being and keeps them feeling balanced and secure! 🐾💛

🐾 Did You Know? How a Dog Sits Can Tell You a Lot About Their Physical Well-being! 🐾

A dog should be able to sit square, with all four limbs facing the same direction and their back legs positioned behind the front ones. In the first photo, you can see that although Fern’s feet are facing the same direction, her hindlimbs are much wider apart than her forelimbs.

In the second photo, Fern is sitting on a platform, which helps her engage the muscles needed to achieve a more balanced posture.

Many dogs also sit right back on their spine or rest on one hip with one leg stretched out. While this may not always signal a problem, it could be an indicator of muscular imbalances or discomfort.

At Behavioural Referrals Veterinary Practice, we offer physiotherapy services to help assess and address any physical concerns. If you notice unusual sitting habits or other movement-related issues, we recommend contacting your GP vet for a referral to our veterinary physiotherapist.

International Women's day. I was lucky enough to work as part of a team of inspirational women from the veterinary profession today. Warrington Animal Welfare organised a community neutering event where all members of the team are volunteers. Many of these cats were neutered for free because the only way to tackle unwanted/unnecessary litters is to neuter regardless of whether you want to pay for it.

We need to remember that pets are a luxury. It is up to us as pet caregivers to be able to afford the simple things to uphold their welfare.
