**DAY 2** Hazards of Christmas ⚠️

🍫 CHOCOLATE contains a stimulant called theobromine (a bit like caffeine) that is poisonous to dogs. The amount of theobromide differs in the different types of chocolate (dark chocolate has the most in it). Theobromide mainly affects the heart, central nervous system and kidneys. Symptoms will occur from 4-24 hours after your dog has eaten chocolate and will vary depending on the amount of chocolate (theobromine) your dog has eaten.

If your dog has eaten chocolate, you may see:
*Vomiting (may include blood)
*Diarrhoea
*Restlessness and hyperactivity
*Rapid breathing
*Muscle tension, incoordination
*Increased heart rate
*Seizures

Please contact us if your dog eats any chocolate or if you see any signs as soon as you can

**Day 1** Hazards of Christmas ⚠️

Christmas can be a busy and chaotic time with large quantities of food and presents left unattended. Curious pets, particularly dogs, may investigate and eat gifts (including edible ones) left under the tree, food in the kitchen or chew on plants decorating the house

Each day we will go into more detail for each item
Please call your local branch if you are concerned your pet has ingested any of the below

This is really important and could be a massive step in the right direction for animal welfare.

⚠️ This Friday, the (Import of Dogs, Cats, and Ferrets) Bill is up for its second reading.

This crucial legislation would help end puppy smuggling, ban imports of animals with harmful mutilations (e.g. cropped ears), and reduce the risk of certain diseases entering the UK.

Help us make this happen — download our template letter and urge your MP to support the Bill.

It is easier to prevent pain than to “chase” it once it takes hold in the body (Downing et al., 2023).

Animals live “in the moment”, potentially making pain worse for them than for humans. They cannot deal intellectually with pain, think of better moments in the past, or anticipate that their pain will end in the future.

Welcome to the Building Resilience Team Jazz. It was a pleasure to meet you and your caregivers today. You quickly sussed the treat pouch 🤭 I will let you off this week but you'll have to work for them in future.

Today is World Diabetes Day! 🐾💙

Just like humans, our furry companions can develop diabetes too. Pet diabetes occurs when the body can’t properly produce or utilise insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. Early detection is key to managing this condition and ensuring your pet lives a happy, healthy life.

Some signs to watch for include increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, reduced activity/feeling tired, and increased appetite. If you notice any of these symptoms, book an appointment with us right away.

I am resharing this. Be prepared and help your animals to feel secure.

With just over a week until Halloween, if you have a scared pet why not print this out and put it in your window or on your door? You can leave a tub of sweets outside your property away from where your pets are resting. That way everybody can share in the enjoyment of the spooky season.

Meet Boo. Boo is 15 years old and decided to go for a little adventure when her caregiver took the bins out. Boo snook under a gate and went off on a little walk, until she got spooked and started to run in the road. It was dark and the cars and buses almost didn't see her. Luckily for Boo three strangers helped to save her. Boo is microchipped. This meant that she could safely be returned to her loving family within a couple of hours.

It has been a legal requirement since 2016 to have your dogs' microchipped; and their details up to date. If you aren't sure about your dog's microchip then speak with your vet.

💥FIREWORK PREPARATION TIPS💥

Pheromone products: ADAPTIL Calm diffuser – this is a synthetic analogue of the natural pheromone which is produced by lactating bi***es, and signals to puppies that they are safe and secure. This pheromone can confirm safety and relaxation to anxious dogs. The diffuser should be left on constantly in the room where the safe haven is positioned (or where you dog will be during the fireworks). Please ensure it is not hidden behind sofas or has anything over it such as cupboards, otherwise it will not work properly. A spray version of the pheromone can also be sprayed on bedding if you then wait 15minutes before allowing your dog on the bed.

💥FIREWORK PREPARATION TIPS💥

💊Situation medication – these can be used to help reduce anxiety for specific events. There are different types available. Due to side effects, we do trial doses prior to therapeutic use with some of the medication types. Some of these also have memory blocking properties so can help your dog forget a scary event and prevent them gathering memories which might encourage repeated reactions in the future.

Medication is not suitable for all dogs so please discuss this your GP vet or with a member of one of our team if you have been referred to us.

💥FIREWORK PREPARATION TIPS💥

Interaction with known, low arousal training exercises can provide distraction during firework events. Alternatively, you can use Kongs, chews, or other treat dispensing toys. (Always supervise you dog during this time)

Whilst I don't wish to be a kill joy. There are lots of factors that bonfires and fireworks have on the environment and animal and human welfare. Could you consider going to an organised event instead? I would also suggest that you leave your dogs at home because no matter how sound savvy we think they are, it only takes one negative incident to change all of that.
