Dogs are highly attuned to social cues and body language, and they look to their human owners as their pack leaders. When a dog perceives its owner as calm and consistent, it can feel safe and secure, knowing that it is in the presence of a strong and reliable leader.
On the other hand, when an owner is erratic or unpredictable in their behavior, a dog can become anxious or confused, which can lead to problem behaviors such as barking, chewing, or aggression.

Tiny! Chihuahuas, despite many peoples beliefs are very intelligent dogs and are able to achieve great levels of obedience! They’re mainly seen as lapdogs however they have a lot of energy, and would rather be running around releasing it. This often is the cause of the feisty somewhat aggressive tendencies. Very loyal to their family but not overly keen on anyone else which is something to think about if you’re in the market!

I know it’s hard to say no sometimes, but resisting their cute stares will serve you well in the long run!
Dogs are very habitual and will learn that certain behaviours get them what they want. If your puppy does a cute stare while you’re eating, and you feed them, you’re only reinforcing that it is okay to beg. This will only become annoying as the grow up!

Remember all dogs have different activity and exercise requirements. Some dogs are happy to laze about and go for one 20minute stroll a day where as other dogs (like my springer spaniel), are constantly looking to run around, sniff for things and chase anything that looks like a little green ball!
Tiring your dog out will help you in training as your dog will be a lot calmer and more controllable, thus making it easier for us to communicate our expectations with them.

Sometimes reactivity and fear can stem from things we simply cannot hear, fireworks are a brilliant example of this! Just think how scary the bang, pop and wizz would be just outside your house.

This is so important!
Dogs need a consistent set of rules to be comfortable, don’t have one rule one day and then completely change it the next. For example, If you never want your dog to beg for your food, then never give them your food or attention when you’re eating! Simple as that!

Always think of how much a dog is going to grow, and also how much space they will take up, before you go out and choose a breed!
Not having enough space is a big reason dogs end up in shelters, so please think about this before you go out and get one!

Here are 5 examples of boundaries useful for us in daily life;
•No jumping on people
•Ask your dog to sit and wait before going out the door
•No dogs allowed on the bed(unless invited)
•Sending them to their “place”
•Walking in the ‘green circle’ at heel.

Setting simple boundaries and expectations like these will help allow your dog to relax and be more comfortable in turn making your life easier.
