Reward that!

If you’ve done any training with me, you’ve probably seen me stop mid-sentence and exclaim “Reward that!” as a dog does something great.

During a home visit, I might even whisper “Reward that!” as a dog curls up on their bed.

As humans, we tend to get more animated and vociferous in response to behaviors we don’t want - wrong!

Instead, if we reward what we want, we’ll get more of it!

It often seems impossible to ‘reward the positive’ if our dog is playing up but there are always gaps in the unwanted behaviour so, grab those golden moments and start transforming your dog.

Doodle Dogs has a few places left in classes this summer:

Scentwork: Teach your dog to find a specific scent and show you where it is. Great for dogs of all breeds and ages. We’re currently enjoying this activity outside on Box Playing Fields.
2 spaces left. £15 per class.

Rally: Fun obedience that covers everyday skills such as lead-walking, sit and down but goes all the way to competition level, if you want. The emphasis is on fun.
2 spaces left. £15 per class.

Puppy Classes: My next 8 week puppy course starts on 29th August.
1 space left. £100 for 8 lessons.

See my website for more information and how to book.

Meet Pseudo

My impeccably behaved(!) ‘stooge’ dog.

No, I haven’t lost the plot or given up on the living, breathing variety.

Pseudo is sufficiently life-like to help dog-reactive dogs overcome their fears. Standing quietly in the corner, there is absolutely no chance of him moving, growling or barking.

Perfect!

~ Dog Training Isn’t Magic ~

Yikes, I’ve let the cat out of the bag!

Seriously though, consistency and repetition are key to training so, if Fido isn’t responding as well as he used to, consider some practice implementing these fundamentals.

If that doesn’t work, I can help you identify any problems and break these down into smaller training targets with specific exercises to get you back on track.

Love and treats,
Ali

How to play Tug-of-War safely with your dog (Courtesy of Whole Dog Journal):

1) Only tug sideways. Vigorous up-and-down tugging can injure your dog’s spine.

2) Tug gently for puppies and senior dogs. Healthy adult dogs can engage in vigorous tugging, but pups and seniors could be injured by too much tug-intensity.

3) Teach your dog to wait politely until invited to tug. Say “Wait,” then hold up the tug toy. If she jumps for it, say, “Oops!” and hide the toy behind your back. Repeat until you can hold up the toy and she doesn’t try to grab it. Then you can say, “Take it!” and push the toy toward her.

4) Teach your dog to give you the toy when you ask for it – then play again!

5) If your dog is already an aroused tugger – jumping on you, or nipping/grabbing the toy – stand on the other side of a baby gate or inside an exercise pen to play Tug.

6) Children only play Tug (under direct supervision!) with a dog who knows and respects the rules.

7) Your dog can play-growl during tug. You should be able to tell that this is playful by analyzing the rest of her body language: playful dogs have wagging tails and a loose, wiggly body. If she growls in an intense way, with hard eye contact, a stiff tail or body, grabs at the toy with a hard mouth and gets your hand, or moves toward you aggressively, Tug is not a good game for her. If you can’t tell whether she’s resource-guarding or playing, ask a force-free professional for help!

8) Don’t let anyone Tug with your dog who won’t follow your rules.

9) Have fun!

Is this a dog? No!
Is it a wolf? Yes!
Are they different? Yes!

So how come there is so much information out there telling us to treat our dogs like wolves, using words like: ‘dominance’ and ‘pack leader’?

Because science has moved on but old information has not been erased.

Decades ago, studies were carried out and conclusions were drawn but, with subsequent learning, the flaws in these studies can be summed up in 3 words, they were carried out on Artificial Wolf Packs.

* Artificial (not natural groups or behaviours)
* Wolf (not dog, different species)
* Packs (dogs are not pack animals)

If you wondered about human behavior, would you study humans or captive chimpanzees?

It was amazing meeting this wolf but his development will have been different to my domesticated dog and I definitely don’t want him in my home!

My training methods, like all IMDT trainers, are positive and science based. I train dogs, not wolves and I want your dog to trust you, not fear you.

Get in touch if you have any questions about your dog (not wolf)!
