Sooooo, this happened today!๐คญ Yep thatโs right, I paired one of my T.Seladonia females with my male. It went really well and they were both so gentle. I was actually far less stressed pairing these than I am when I pair my jumping spiders which is mad considering the price of these guys and how long Iโve been raising them. Now before you all message me saying you want a sling when theyโre ready, we are a long way off that yet and still donโt know if this pairing will produce anything. I often get asked about keeping spiders next to each other. โIs it ok for them to see another spider?โ โDoes it stress them out?โ โShould you keep males and females out of sight from each other?โ These are just some of the questions I get at least once a week.
Everyone will have their own opinion on this, but hereโs where I stand on the topic.
For my paired females and those with eggsacs and babies I keep them separated from all other spiders by slotting a piece of card between their enclosures so that they donโt need to worry about anything except whatโs in their own enclosure. I donโt want them to worry about any other spider coming into their territory to threaten the babies. Now obviously no other spider could get into their enclosure, but they donโt know that, so eliminating that worry for them means they can just focus on the babies.
For all my other spiders I actually think itโs good for them to have the extra enrichment of seeing other spiders, and both sexes, different species etc. I still slot a piece of card between the enclosures on an evening, but during the day itโs nice to see them interact with other spiders next door to them through the enclosure walls, so I allow them a few hours each day to have a spy on their next door neighbours.
Sometimes however, the males can get a bit persistent especially when theyโre at mating age, so I keep a close eye on them all and if a spider starts to look a bit harassed by their neighbours advances I either move them to another spot on the shelf, or I keep the piece of card slotted between them to block their view.
Majority of the time everyone seems to get along nicely with their shelf mates๐ค
