Practice what your preach! 😉🙌🏻
Most of my clients will have heard me talk about how much I love poles, especially walk poles… well here is my lovely horse Freddie have a play over some walk and trot poles on the lunge recently - just look at that joint movement 😍💪🏻

All horses process the changes to their bodies in different ways within a session - some will yawn etc, whilst others will take themselves off to their own space to process.
Yesterday evening, mid way through a session, after performing a myofascial release on her shoulder, this lovely youngster took herself off and immediately lay down and fell asleep (snoring and dreaming!). It was quite incredible to watch, and really made my week! 🤩🥺
I love my job 🥺♥️

This must be Freddie’s reminder to me that I am having this weekend off! 🤣🐴🧢
All messages will be responded to on Tuesday 9th May!
Enjoy the bank holiday weekend! 👑🇬🇧
A great weekend of canine CPD for me, covering all things anatomy, training and exercise 💪🏻🐶🐕
I love being able to continue developing my knowledge and skills from other therapists and get different perspectives on topics - we never stop learning! 📚

Before and after physiotherapy…🥰🤩
Tension, sensitivity and muscle spasms along the horse’s back is one of the most common findings during a physiotherapy session.
Causes can include:
🔹 Incorrect tack fit
🔹 Incorrect way of working
🔹 Poor posture, weaknesses elsewhere in the body, or underlying conditions
🔹 Slips or falls in the field (which is increasingly common with the current weather! ☔️)
Some horses will display obvious signs of discomfort with back pain, such as bucking or reluctance to be tacked up, whilst for others it can be more subtle, which is why physiotherapy is so important!
These videos were taken before and immediately after treatment to the area, which consistent of manual massage and spinal mobilisations 🤲🏻🐴

🐶 Canine Physiotherapy 🐶
Apologies for the less than perfect camera angle, I’m awful at getting videos during a session, but I wanted to share the progress of the lovely Freida! 🐾📈
Freida was diagnosed earlier this year with a type of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), which is common in Dachshunds. This left her unable to walk unassisted with neurological impairment affecting her hindlimbs, so to avoid surgery, Freida was referred for physiotherapy.
Freida’s sessions involve a mixture of manual massage and stretching, electrotherapies (particular PEMFT and laser) and controlled exercises - which have helped to reduce pain, improve her balance/posture and improve nerve function. She has progressed really well and so recently we have been able to incorporate weight shifting exercises using the wobble cushion to further improve her muscle strength and balance, as seen in the video! 💪🏻📈🤩

❤️🌹Valentine’s Polework 🌹❤️
With Valentine’s Day just round the corner, let’s spread the love… the love of polework!❣️😍
It’s not secret that I ❤️ polework - not only is it fun and engaging, but there are so many physical benefits too, such as:
❣️ Improve core engagement, strengthening back muscles and subsequently improving your horse’s dynamic posture
❣️ Increase hindlimb engagement and joint range of motion, which can help to increase stride length and assist with both muscle building and strengthening
❣️ Improve coordination and balance, whilst also providing stimulation during schooling sessions
The best part of polework is it can be adapted for each horse depending on their fitness and health - for example using in hand poles during rehabilitation or ridden poles before introducing jumping 💪🏻↗️🐎
You can adapt these exercises for the number of poles you have available (for example having to heart on its own, or the ‘Cupid’s arrow’ (like at the end of the video) or making the heart smaller) so do not worry if you don’t have as many poles as this video!
Remember to make sure your horse Is warmed up before going over the poles and to look at for signs of fatigue during exercise - such as tripping or repeatedly knocking the poles 👀😴
Enjoy! I had lots of fun creating, setting out and using this pole layout (ridden, in hand and whilst lungin - remember to tag Abbott Veterinary Physiotherapy in your videos or comment them below - I love seeing them!
Christmas Polework #4🎅🏻🐴🎄
The final festive polework layout is the New Year’s Champagne Bottle, and below are a few suggestions on how to use the layout! 🍾
One of my favourite polework layouts to include in both my ridden and lunging sessions is the ‘fan’. I love it because not only can you set it up to allow you to walk, trot and canter over the same 4 poles whilst encouraging lateral bending of the spine, but by taking different lines over the fan, you can encourage both shortening and lengthening of your horses stride! 💪🏻
This week I also included raised poles once my horse was warmed up and comfortable with the flat poles. Initially I started with them raising the far side of the curve and then moved them to alternating ends to prevent my horse from falling in - that’s why I love polework so much, you can tailor each exercise to how your horses is feeling on the day!
Top tip: I use ‘potties’ to raise my poles but you can use jump wings/blocks or cavaletties… whatever you have available that is safe! 🔝
Enjoy! And remember to tag me in your videos - I’ve loved seeing you guys use and adapt these ideas!
Let me know if you’ve enjoyed these festive polework layouts and want to see more seasonal ideas throughout the year!
Wishing all our clients, friends and family a happy new year! 🎉
Roll on 2022! 🎉🥂❤️
Christmas Polework #3 🎅🏻🐴🎄
The next polework layout is the Christmas Present, and below are a few suggestions on how to use the layout!
As well as being fun and making sessions more interesting, polework has so many physical benefits, it can:
♦️ Increase core muscle engagement, helping to improve your horse’s posture and strengthen their back
♦️ Encourage greater joint flexion and extension
♦️Improve awareness of their limbs
I use poles regularly with my own horse, both ridden and during groundwork, and have noticed a massive improvement in his suppleness during each session, as well as progressively increasing his stride length and particularly his shoulder range of movement, which has not only benefited his flatwork but also his jumping! 💪🏻🔝
Remember to make sure your horses is properly warmed up before going over poles and tailor each session to your horses needs!
Enjoy!
Christmas Polework #2 🎅🏻🐴🎄
The next polework layout is the Christmas Cracker, and here’s a few suggestions on how to use the layout!
I used this layout to improve straightness, encourage either lengthening and shortening of the stride by taking different lines as well as improving transition accuracy and hindlimb engagement using transitions over and between the poles (trot-halt-trot and canter-trot-canter) 🏆
Whilst encouraging higher hoof height through increased joint flexion, polework also helps to improve suppleness, particularly through using lots of changes of bend 💪🏻
Remember, you can make this as challenging as you want, so tailor it to you and your horse’s needs 😊
Enjoy!
