Muzzle conditioning - free shaping.
Putting together some how to videos for clients and thought I’d share this here as well.
Free shaping is presenting a *thing* and then marking & rewarding the right behaviours your dog shows naturally. In this case we’re using a muzzle & we started by just marking & rewarding when he looked at the muzzle & progressed to him offering this behaviour on his own.
Free shaping can be done with a target mat, muzzle, bed, or conditioning equipment like a harness.

If you set a boundary, it has to be clear and if you want behaviour to change you have to make sure you’re setting the boundary the second your dog does the behaviour, not after 5 or 10 minutes when you finally get annoyed at their behaviour. If they are pulling, set a boundary the second tension is on the lead. If they’re mouthing while play, the moment their teeth touch your skin the play stops. If they’re mouthing while aren’t allowed on the sofa, don’t allow them up someday but get annoyed at them other days. The boundary has to be clear otherwise you’ll create unnecessary conflict with your dog. #dogtrainer #dogtrainingdogtraining
These guys are crushing it! I worked with Miso and his lovely human at the end of last year on basic obedience, socialisation & preventative training for separation anxiety. He is smashing his training and doing incredibly well. If you would like a personalised training plan to work towards your training goals, drop me a message & we can get it started! #dogtraining #dogtrainer
IF YOUR DOG IS ALREADY SHOWING RESOURCE GUARDING, DO NOT DO THIS & SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE - This is just prevention with young dogs. Resource guarding is a massive issue for so many dogs and one of the main reasons is because it is rooted in INSECURITY. Whether that is insecurity in a new environment, around dogs or people or over around food in general. When a dog feels insecure they are going to guard what they find valuable or what has been a threat in the past. This does not have to be rational threat, but even a perceived threat can cause resource guarding. With these puppies I am simply creating positive outcomes to myself walking towards them with a Kong filled with food. It’s important not to rush any of this and I only start to handle the Kong once she is freely moving away from it & is more interested in what I have to offer - and at no point in time did a completely remove the Kong, it was always in view & always given back to the dog. With anything like this you NEVER want to fight the dog for the resource, be a threat to the situation or rush the process of handling it. These puppies are frantic and stressed around food in general & this is why we are working on this training. Stress around the resource is an early sign of possible guarding!...#foreignrescuedog #streetdog #rescuedogtraining #caninebehaviourconsultant #streetdogtraining #rescuedog #onlinedogtraining #dogtraining #dogtrainer Street Hearts BG
A dog that doesn’t like the company of other dogs will probably never be playful with other dogs.A dog that has fear towards people or doesn’t enjoy being pet by people, will not magically start to enjoy the company of strangers. It’s just not who your dog is.Through classical conditioning we can help to influence how your dog associates things & have gradual changes in their emotional responses to dogs and people but that doesn’t automatically mean that they will like things like play, interactions or being touched or stroked. So in terms of reactivity, we can build confidence, resilience and teach alternative behaviours while around triggers, but it’s likely your dog won’t magically love those triggers. Arlo has friends, he has a good 15+ people that he is comfortable around, and a good 5-10 people he actively seeks attention from & wants cuddles from, but he will NEVER be the type of dog that will go up to strangers & want attention from strangers. So have a big think about your priorities & your expectations when it comes to your dog’s reactivity or anxiety training. ..#dogtraining #dogtrainer #streetdog
Decompression period for Foreign Rescue dogs. The travel to their new homes can be a very stressful experience for many foreign rescues and this means that when they arrive they can be quite shut down, nervous and unwilling to interact. When they get to their new homes it’s really important that we give them their own space without people, children or other dogs in the home around so that they can decompress and start to understand where they are. This decompression period can look different for every dog but how we interact with them in the first week is important. We usually say at least for the first few days, avoid interactions with young children & other dogs in the home. This is because the high level of cortisol they’re experiencing can cause these interactions to go badly, sometimes causing aggressive behaviours or resource guarding behaviours in a multi dog household or around young children.Forcing interactions in this time can also cause the dog to feel unsafe or fearful so it can take longer for them to truly settle in. Why the “look at that” game may not be working for your reactive dog…It’s a place most people start while working through reactivity with their dog and while definitely a good starting point, ideally we want to move away from simple “engage disengage”Point 1:Over fixation on the trigger can be seen in frustration reactivityPoint 2:We always need to think of the outcome, if the dog wants the trigger to move away, the food in that moment may not be as reinforcing as movement to relieve stress.Point 3:Alternative behaviours in the presence of the trigger are super important to teach, it regains focus to you, takes fixation off the trigger & is super important for day to day walks....#puppydevelopment #dogenrichment #onlinedogtraining #caninebehaviourconsultant #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #streetdog #streetdogtraining #foreignrescuedog #vanlifedog #vanlifeuk #vanlife #adventure #adventuredog #adventuredogtraining

Functional training doesn’t have to be fancy but these are 2 very useful things to teach your dog alongside recall to ensure safety off lead and they both work with a release cue of “ok” to gain freedom again! Another one I want to add to this list that isn’t in the video is a “let’s go” cue which is a directional change either to move away from dogs or if he’s off sniffing and I walk down another path 👌🏼No E-collar, No punishment, Only cookies 🍪 (Excuse my heavy breathing… it was a very big hill 😂🤣).., #caninetraining #dogTraining #dogbehaviour #dogbehaviourmodification #dogobedience #dogobediencetraining #dogtrainer#puppytraining #puppylove #forcefreedogtraining #fftraining #ffdogtraining #puppydevelopment #dogenrichment #onlinedogtraining #caninebehaviourconsultant #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #streetdog #streetdogtraining #foreignrescuedog #vanlifedog
Your dog walking in front of you can actually be very convenient, especially if you’re like me and love a hands free lead walk. Arlo does have a heel cue but lead walking can be so much easier when they walk in front (without much tension) as it means they are not getting tangled in the lead. Dogs naturally want to walk faster than us and giving them more lead to do so can help with teaching lead walking. Personally I love arlo walking in front of me but I have heard people say he’s being “disobedient” or “disrespectful” which is BS 🤣 he’s being a dog and it’s convenient for the both of us 👌🏼You can call me lazy but I love a hands free lead walk & that is so much easier if the lead isn’t dragging on the floor and he’s walking ahead!... #caninetraining #dogTraining #dogbehaviour #dogbehaviourmodification #dogobedience #dogobediencetraining #dogtrainer#puppytraining #puppylove #forcefreedogtraining #fftraining #ffdogtraining #puppydevelopment #dogenrichment #onlinedogtraining #caninebehaviourconsultant #rescuedog #rescuedogtraining #streetdog #streetdogtraining #foreignrescuedog #vanlifedog
