Ok, so lets break this down. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙚 𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜❓ It's a fear of losing something or losing access to something that the dog perceives as valuable. This is a perfectly natural behaviour for our dogs and for us.
𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙤𝙪𝙧𝙘𝙚 𝙜𝙪𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 - your dog trying to dominate you, being naughty, pushing their limits, asserting control or trying to make their way up the pecking order of the house.

1. Put your hand your dogs food bowl as they're eating
2. Take their food away mid meal
3. Fiddle with their food or their body as they're eating
4. Take objects or food out of their mouths without swapping it for something else
5. Chase and grab your dog when they have something you don't want them to have in order to get it back
All these things can create suspicion around resources. Putting suspicion and fear into our relationship with our dogs is counter productive. 𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪❜𝙧𝙚 𝙙𝙤𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙮 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙫𝙚, 𝙥𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙥❗
Most dogs couldn't care any less if you put your hand in their food bowl mid meal or stroked them whilst they ate. I'm sure most of you have dogs that would be absolutely fine with that, I don't think my two would mind... 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙝𝙮 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙠 𝙞𝙩❓ A lot of you here have gun dog breeds, breeds that are bred to enjoy holding things in their mouths. These types of dogs can be more prone to resource guarding if push comes to shove, so again why risk it?

You may have put your hand in your dogs food bowl or taken things out of their mouths for years with all your other dogs who have been absolutely fine with it. It goes to show how tolerant dogs are of the things we do to them. But, your new puppy or rescue dog is different from any other dog you've ever had or have know and our knowledge and education has moved on. Your dog is an individual and what if by doing something you've always done, you create resource guarding in your dog... you can do it in a split second and it can take a long time to undo.
If you would like to teach your dog how to leave things, great that's a useful skill for them to have! But please do not do it with their meal, when they're hungry, when they just want to eat in peace. What you put in your dogs bowl is always going to be safe and good for them, so why train a leave or do handling work whilst they're eating? How would you feel if I did the same to you?
Don't take it personally if your dog guards something from you. It's a perfectly natural behaviour, but one we don't want to accidentally train our dogs to do or feel they need to do.

If you have a problem with resource guarding, please seek the help of a professional. A great book to understand more about the subject is 'Mine' by Jean Donaldson.
