Sadly this is something that is forgotten in modern times.

Personally I believe in taking responsibility for yourself, your animals, and their behaviour. Perhaps we should truly hold owners culpable for their dogs actions?

I don’t believe in blanket bans, but if too many members of the public are not responsible enough to safely manage these large, powerful breeds should these breeds sadly be phased out?

Should we have licensing, much like we do for guns?

I don’t know the answer, but I don’t think the BSL is it.

"Just a generation ago if you went near a dog when he was eating and the dog growled, somebody would say, 'Don't go near the dog when he's eating!, what are you crazy?'
Now the dog gets punished or put to sleep !

Back then, dogs were allowed to say, NO.
Dogs are not allowed to say no anymore!!!

They can't get freaked out, they can't be afraid, they can never signal 'I'd rather not.' We don't have any kind of nuance with regard to dogs expressing that they are uncomfortable, afraid, angry, or in pain, worried, or upset.
If the dog is anything other than completely sunny and goofy every second, he goes from a nice dog to an 'AGGRESSIVE' dog."
- Jean Donaldson

Listen to your dogs people, they are trying to communicate with you in the only way they can !

Thank you again Dr David Marlin.

POOR HEATSTROKE TREATMENT ADVICE - NOT A GOOD START TO THE WEEK!

I was very disappointed to see this conclusion to a poll on the Facebook Group "Clinician's Brief" over the weekend. I know for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere it's still winter and heatstroke is a long way from our minds.

In horses and people it has been recognised for nearly 25 years that heatstroke is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY! The higher the body temperature and the longer it stays high, the greater the risk of permanent injury or death! RAPID COOLING comes second only to cardiac arrest or lack of airway/breathing.

This message has reached many (most?) medics and equine vets. The ones it hasn't reached I strongly believe are usually those who have never been faced with a severely hyperthermic patient.

So why hasn't this concept achieved the same reach in the small animal veterinary community? I know from MANY small animal vets and technicians in hot climates that this is second nature to them and they also struggle to understand why their colleagues believe that "lukewarm water" is the best approach. AND just for clarification, "lukewarm" is BODY TEMPERATURE! If you put a person or a dog in a lukewarm bath IT WILL STAY THE SAME BODY TEMPERATURE!!!!

The three main myths around rapid cooling, and I believe the most likely reason why people promote using lukewarm water, are usually:

1) That cold water causes cardiac arrest - FALSE - zero evidence.

2) That cold water causes constriction of blood vessels in the skin and slows cooling - FALSE - studies show that even if vasoconstriction does occur cooling continues through conduction

3) Stories circulating of dogs cooled rapidly that then died! This is almost certainly because they were cooled TOO LATE not because they were cooled with cold water

It's an uphill challenge!

Police dogs are just incredible, imagine what might have happened to his handler if he hadn't been so brave and skilled, so pleased he is OK but it is so sad that anyone would do this.

We would love to offer PD Kaiser a complimentary sports and rehab massage to help with his recovery!

We are wishing PD Kaiser and his handler from the Met Police Dog Unit a speedy recovery, after both were attacked on duty last night. Kaiser is lucky to be alive, after he was stabbed 5 times in the head. Despite being stabbed, Kaiser kept hold of the man until he was arrested. Get well soon Kaiser, you are one very brave boy! 💙🇬🇧🐶

There are times when I wonder why I let her (normally when I'm being soothed by 40db snoring, breathing in a cloud of puppy farts, while awkwardly trying get comfy around the body stretched out in the absolute centre of the bed 🙄) but I wouldn't change it for anything...

"The researchers explained: Compared with human bed partners, dogs who slept in the owner's bed were perceived to disturb sleep less and were associated with stronger feelings of comfort and security."

If your a dog owner and you've been struggling to get a good night's sleep, you might want to consider snuggling up with your four-legged friend

More excellent advice.

Sadly I am seeing too many therapists trying to use inadequate thermal imaging as a diagnostic tool or to determine if there are issues or concerns. I believe this is unintentional and they are simply misinformed but when you are in a position of trust and your clients believe what you tell them you need to be more careful!

UNDERSTANDING THERMAL IMAGES - AN EXAMPLE

A friend recently asked if she could use this image in one of her exercise physiology classes. And it got me thinking. We see thermal images used to sell all kinds of products or services. But understanding what a thermal image is showing is not necessarily that straightforward.

Probably most important thing to appreciate is that these images show SURFACE TEMPERATURE only. We can't tell what the temperature below the surface is. For that in an animal with fur we would need to place a small sensor directly on the skin.

The second important thing is that without a scale we can only draw limited conclusions. And you should never believe a comparison such as a before and after or product A versus product B unless BOTH images have a clear scale.

So what can we see in this image below. Well it was taken out of direct sunlight on a day when the air temperature at the time was around 25°C with a Flir One IPhone sensor. These would not be suitable for clinical diagnostic work but are fine for some purposes.

1) We can see that the dog is warmer than the surrounding floor
2) The head and legs appear warmer than the rest of the body. This is because the hair on the head and leg is finer and less deep than the hair on the body. So the body hair keeps heat in better and the surface appears cooler. The legs and head appear hotter because there is less insulation.
3) The nose is the coldest part of the body. This is because the nose is wet and water evaporates continuously keeping the nose cooler. A wet nose doesn’t contribute much to helping a dog keep cool but a wet nose allows better olfaction (smell detection) than a dry one.
4) The tail also appears quite cold. That's because despite being hairy, it doesn't have much muscle and therefore doesn’t have very high blood flow. Blood flow brings heat.

Smart Chi.

Though Poppy says not so...

1. With that much cash she could have bought much more than a bag of Cheetos, Chi was ripped off...

2. If there wasn't a tasty payment for running said errand there would only be a slim chance of the Cheetos making it back...

3. Realistically there would be no chance the Cheetos made it back under any circumstances...

😇😂

A man in Mexico had been self isolating for days and desired a bag of cheetos. So, he sent his dog on a mission. Antonio Muñoz attached a note to his pet Chihuahua, Chokis, and sent the pup across the street to a convenience store. The note read: “Hello Sir of the store. Can you [...]

"Ask why a dog is doing something (that you don't want them to do) then help them find a better way"

Poppy - company model and glamorous assistant - would love to have a go at this! (Though I would NOT be joining her.)

Just look at those stretches!

I bet this pup would appreciate a good massage after some of those dives...

Too true...

Too true...

Dogs’ lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you’re going to lose a dog, and there’s going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with him, never fail to share his joy or delight in his innocence, because you can’t support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There’s such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price. 💙
