What is E.Coniculi (Encephalitozoon cuniculi)?
E.Coniculi Is a common parasitic infection that affects rabbits brains and kidney’s.
It is thought that a large percentage of rabbits are carriers as it is most likely caught from their mothers. However most rabbits carry the parasite without ever becoming ill. Rabbits can also be infected by sharing a grazing area with a carrier.
Typical signs of an active EC infection are:
* Head tilt
* Nystagmus (Eyes tracking from side to side)
* Weakness in back legs
* Spinning or rolling
* Drinking or urinating more due to kidney Failure
* Seizures, tremors, cataracts
Diagnosis
Many veterinarians will make a diagnosis based on clinical symptoms and by ruling out other possible diagnosis.
Blood tests can be carried out that can detect antibodies of EC, however these tests can sometimes be inaccurate.
Treatment
The typical treatment for EC is an oral 28 day course of Panacur which contains the active ingredient Fenbendazole. Your rabbit may also be prescribed further treatment depending on their symptoms (for example, anti sickness medication for rabbits with nystagmus)
Many rabbits make a full recovery following an EC infection, whilst some may be left with long term side effects such as a permanent head tilt.

Desmond update , it’s now been a week since he was discharged by our vets. He’s definitely getting much more energised .
We’re still not sure of the long term plan for him but we’re discussing treatment options for him currently and we do know he won’t ever be a candidate for adoption. However we will make sure he has the best life we can give him
The winner of Forage Friday is Lesley Ashcroft!
Please drop us a DM so we can arrange to send your prize :)
Thank you to all that entered 🐰
I’m sure some of you have been wondering how Desmond is getting on .He’s had a very up and down weekend , and is still on lots of pain meds and is being syringe fed too .
He did get quite enthusiastic about some cucumber this evening , and whilst this wouldn’t be our first food choice for rabbits it’s great to see him interested in anything.
Desmond has a long way to go still but he’s still fighting and whilst he’s still fighting we will fight for him!
🎉 Bunny Angels UK - Registered Charity 1208845 🎉
We received the amazing news this week that we have officially been made a registered charity.
This will open up so many avenues for us, and will allow us to help so many more rabbits.
Thank you to the team behind Bunny Angels UK for making this happen. Of course we couldn’t do this without our supporters and volunteers too!
To celebrate we will be announcing a flash fundraiser this week, so keep your eyes peeled 🎉🐰

Companionship is a welfare right, and this means that your rabbit should live with at least one bonded friend.
Age, breed and gender do not matter for bonding. It’s down to personalities 🐰
Studies have shown that rabbits value the company of other rabbits as much as they value food.
This fluffle’s bond is 4 males, 2 females all ages relatively unknown as all are rescues, weights range from 1.4kg to 5kg!

We're so grateful to everyone who either bought a Blue Bunny Binkies Bounty Box created by Charlotte of @bluebunnybinkies or shared to help spread the word 💙
The last batch raised £583.29 in profits. This was topped up by Charlotte to an amazing £600 which meant that both Tag Pet Rescue & Bunny Angels UK each received £300. We are so very, very grateful to Charlotte for all the hard work put into creating these boxes and raising a phenomenal amount.
Charlotte is currently working on the next batch which will be slightly different. If you're interested please let her know, there will only be a limited number of boxes available. A significant amount per box will be donated to us so not only will your buns benefit from receiving tasty, safe & beneficial forage etc, you'll be helping rescue buns at the same time. Message Charlotte Fox, @bluebunnybinkies on Instagram, or comment on this post for more details or to add your name to the waiting list.
We are so grateful to everyone who fundraises, donates, shares and interacts with our page, everything goes towards making a difference for bunnies.

Elsie Thuds
🐰Elsie Thuds update🐰
The blood results are back for Elsie Thuds, one of our Sprouts Legacy bunnies.
It’s not great news. She’s testing positive for E.Cuniculi. This is most likely the cause of her enlarged kidneys and bladder weakness. She also has a low white blood cell count indicating a chronic infection, and impaired Liver function so may also have a secondary condition.
The vet’s prognosis was quite guarded. She has started on a 2nd 28day course of Panacur and a Liver support supplement is on order. Next month she will be back to the referral vet for a check up and repeat blood tests.
Her fluid intake is being closely monitored as is her weight. Currently she is still eating well and I saw her 1st attempt at a binky last night. She is quite sassy at times and definitely knows how to get a head rub!

The winner of the castle fundraiser is Joanna Dodd. Well done !
🐰 Meet Elsie Thuds 🐰
Elsie Thuds is one of our Sprouts Legacy buns.
It’s clear she has some underlying health issues as she seems unable to gain weight or muscle mass despite having an appropriate diet and space. Her coat is quite poor and she just doesn’t seem to be thriving as she should.
Today Elsie saw a specialist who has started some further investigative work to try and find out what’s going on.
She’s had some bloods taken and an ultrasound showing enlarged kidneys (also showed us she’s unspayed). Previous faecal tests came back clear and she has no obvious clinical symptoms to explain what’s going on!
Her bill today was £574.45 and we’re still yet to find the cause.
