Seasonal Fever:

As the weather starts to change you may start noticing behavioural changes in your rabbits, this was traditionally known as ‘spring fever’. ☀️

These weather changes can cause hormone spikes in rabbits. In the wild, warmer weather would signal breeding season and trigger the associated behaviours with breeding.

Neutered rabbits still have hormones in their bodies but at a much lower level to un-neutered rabbits.
Some neutered pet rabbits may show social, sexual or even aggressive behaviours although this tends to be mild.

Examples of seasonal fever are: chasing, nipping, mounting their companion, digging, increased chinning or even the occasional accident outside the litter tray.

These behaviours should settle down within a week or two and providing plenty of space and enrichment will allow keep them mentally and physically active during this time.

Seasonal fever is another good example of why it is important to neuter your bunny! 🐰

🎊Success Story - SYDNEY 🎊

Now known as Ernie

Ernie came to Bunny Angels from a sensitive situation, and transferred to Ivy Dene Rabbit Rescue.

Ernie proved to be a very picky boy, and while several potential adopters tried to bond him he found himself in rescue longer than we would have liked.

He eventually found himself a wonderful home after going on another Bondathon between Ivy dene and The Bunny Jackpot foundation.

Originally he was in a bigger group of 5, however after a falling out of between the group. Hes now in a loving bond with Pumpkin. 🩷

Time for our Sunday round up! Our lovely transporters completed 773 miles this week to get 9 rabbits and 1 Guinea Pig where they needed to go!

We helped get Chip to Shrewsbury Rabbit Rescue to bond with his lovely forever girlie. Fortunately St Valentine worked his magic and we are pleased to say the two fell hopelessly in love! ❤️

Thanks to Shay, Mike, and Susan for helping it to happen!

We helped a Guinea Pig to their foster space for The Bunnyjackpot Foundation, thanks to Bryony and Maureen.

A huge team effort was made again to get four more of the Salisbury hoarder buns out. Two are now safely in foster with BA, now named Hazel and Bean, and two more went to their rescue places with The Rabbit Residence Rescue and Blues rabbit and guinea pig sanctuary. We still need funds to help the remaining bunnies that are left! Please help with our fundraiser on go fund me if you can spare a pound or two. https://gofund.me/2a2e7543

Thank you Cathy, Tracy, Amy, Donna, Genevieve, Elizabeth and Lauren’s husband for making this happen!

Eddie hopped off to his forever home this week. We’ve loved being part of your story and wish you every happiness in your new life! Daisy and Sue teamed up for this one! ❤️

Sid & Nancy travelled to their rescue place. Thank you to Stacey and Jennifer for getting them there!

Our lovely older girl Dot had her spay surgery. The vet removed a huge tumour, and we hope Dot now feels much more comfortable! She will need ear surgery in the coming weeks that is going to be pretty expensive, so if you’d like to donate to her operation, it would be so appreciated!

Apologies for not updating sooner. The results of the secondary evaluation of Dots CT scan are back.

- No thymoma but possible early heart disease.
- The masses are indeed abnormal uterine and cervical structures. Concerningly there appears to be adhesions and invasion of her bladder.
- Ear drums are deviating and she is in early stages of forming an ear base diverticulum so that will need addressing too.
- Spondylosis of lumber spine.

So our brave 8yo girl is in for a spay tomorrow this will be a more invasive surgery than normal due to the masses compressing her bladder.

Please everyone keep everything crossed for a positive outcome. Dot couldn’t be in better hands, but this will be a tricky surgery.

Say it loud SPAY your rabbits.

Had Dot been spayed she would not be facing this complicated surgery at 8yrs old. Uterine cancer is almost guaranteed in older un neutered females.

Help spread the word of the importance of spaying all female rabbits. Yet another reason to adopt!

🍃🍃 Forage Focus - DANDELIONS 🍃🍃

Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) are a safe and nutritious treat for rabbits! They are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that can benefit your bunny’s health. Here’s what you need to know:

Health Benefits of Dandelions for Rabbits

Rich in Nutrients – Dandelions are high in vitamins A, C, K, and several B vitamins. They also contain calcium, potassium, and iron, which support overall health.

Good for Digestion – The fiber in dandelions promotes a healthy gut and helps prevent GI stasis.

Supports Urinary Health – Dandelions have diuretic properties that can help maintain kidney and bladder function.

Boosts Immune System – The antioxidants in dandelions can strengthen your rabbit’s immune system.

Encourages Appetite – If your rabbit is picky or recovering from an illness, dandelions can stimulate their appetite.

Parts of the Dandelion Rabbits Can Eat

✅ Leaves – Nutrient-rich and great for daily feeding in moderation.
✅ Flowers – A tasty treat with beneficial antioxidants.
✅ Stems – Safe but should be fed in smaller amounts due to the milky sap.
✅ Roots – Can be eaten, but best given in small amounts.

How to Feed Dandelions to Rabbits

Wash them thoroughly – Wild dandelions may have pesticides or pollution.

Introduce gradually – Start with small amounts to ensure no digestive upset.

Feed in moderation – Dandelions are healthy but should be fed in addition to unlimited hay

Precautions

Avoid dandelions from areas treated with pesticides, herbicides, or near roads.

We’re due to remove the final 4 females this weekend from the overbreeding situation we’ve been dealing with.

These females are highly likely to be pregnant so we urgently need to raise funds to cover vaccinations and neutering. 🙏🏼

As mentioned previously, all funds we raise will be split between the rescues that have made spaces for this case.

Please donate and share if you can:

Fabulous news for Kurt ! Gender absolutely doesn’t matter for bonds 😊

Fabulous news for Kurt ! Gender absolutely doesn’t matter for bonds 😊

Over the past week, we have been busy bonding Kurt and Shadow.

Shadow's mum got in touch a while ago looking for an older friend for Shadow, who had sadly lost his partner.

We didn't have any older buns at the time, so we suggested contacting Bunny Angels UK and if they had a suitable bunny we would help with bonding, and so along came Kurt!

The boys, both aged about 7 years old, have made slow but steady progress and have now hopped off home to Nairn to carry on their bonding journey with our assistance.

There's a few takeaways from this story 👇🏻

🌟 Gender is not a factor when it comes to bonding, compatability is the only thing that matters.
🌟 Bunnies with medical issues can still be bonded. Shadow needs medication twice daily, which was not a problem.
🌟 Age is not a factor, all bunnies need companionship.
🌟 Location is not an issue. Kurt started off in Kent and was carefully transported (thanks to Bunny Angel volunteers) up to Aberdeenshire.
🌟 Rescues are a community, and we achieve more when we work together!

If you're looking for a friend for your bunny, please do get in touch. If we don't have the right bunny for you, we will happily help you look for the right match and can recommend some really good rescues.

A big thank you to Shadow's guardians for trusting us with him and taking on the continuance of the bonding process, and to the Bunny Angels for finding the right match and getting Kurt safely to us.

From Kent 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 all the way up to Nairn! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿. What a journey! and absolutely worth it to get the right home for the right bunny. 🐰❤️🐰

Let’s talk teeth…

Rabbits are known for having 4 large incisors (front teeth) but you may not be aware that they have 2 tiny incisors called peg teeth. These peg teeth sit behind the upper incisors.
Rabbits also have 6 upper and 5 lower molars (back teeth) each side.

Incisors are used to cut through vegetation such as hay or grass, and the molars then grind the food down into smaller pieces.

Rabbits teeth are open rooted (meaning they grow continuously) to compensate for the constant wear of breaking down tough, fiberous foods.

Low fibre diets, such as museli, do not provide sufficient fibre to wear down the teeth. This can result in the teeth growing longer and meeting the opposing teeth in an abnormal position.
Over time this leads to sharp points developing, these are known as spurs. Spurs can cut into the tongue in cheek which causes painful ulcerations and can lead to abscesses.

Malocclusion is term used when the teeth don’t meet properly. If not managed correctly, it results in abnormal pressure of the teeth against one another. This eventually leads to root impaction often known as dental disease.

Common signs of dental disease are:
•jaw abscesses
•blocked tear ducts
•runny eyes
•excessive drooling
•reluctance to eat
•slow eating
•selective eating

Rabbits can be given dentals to file (burr) the problem teeth into the correct shape and alignment. Molar burrs need to be performed under anaesthetic.

The best way to prevent dental issues is by providing the correct diet!
