Do you think you're a good breeder? Yes? Then please click this link

Looking for the good guys in the dog world that want to help prevent people making terrible mistakes! You may be an ethical breeder - maybe your rescue and you're fed up cleaning up after the mess and would like to help avoid so many broken dogs? Do join in and help fix this.

Please do pass this on to everyone who has a Cavalier. McAdd gene was found to be affecting 1 in 20 Cavaliers tested and a quarter were carriers.

Do you know someone who has a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? If so can you please share this free copy of Dogs Today's July issue. On page 18 there's an article about a new condition that's been identified in the breed that makes it potentially deadly for affected dogs to eat foods containing Coconut Oil or Palm Oil. These are ingredients often included in some of the better pet foods. For most dogs - ie those not affected by the McAdd gene - these additives have lots of beneficial qualities.

The good news is, if you discover the genetic status of your Cavalier you can make life-changing diet changes - they will need feeding little and often and you'll need to read labels carefully to avoid certain ingredients.

There is a simple and affordable genetic test to find carriers, clears and affected dogs - but until a Cavalier's status is known it may be safest to swerve those ingredients and make sure your dog doesn't go too long between meals or gets too stressed or over-exerted. The affected dogs are not able to access stored fats like other dogs and may collapse.

This is a fairly newly identified condition was previously thought to be exceptionally rare so previous cases in the breed may have evaded detection as the symptoms will mimic lots of other conditions.

The magazine is very grateful to the ethical breeder who discovered cases in her line and created a Facebook support group and is encouraging everyone to keep their precious dogs safe. If all breeders test for this condition before breeding it will be possible to avoid carrier to carrier matings and gradually remove this nasty condition from being a silent killer.

Please pass this on and share as widely as you can - it could save lives

Please share the July edition of Dogs Today as widely as possible, there's vital information inside on page 18 for every owner of Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. It's a discovery that could save many lives. Some dogs have a genetic problem which means foods containing coconut or palm oil could be deadly.

I will be on Talk TV this afternoon at 5.30ish talking to Vanessa Feltz about Direct Line Pet Insurance's Pet Theft crime report and we'll cover the need to pester our MPs and the PM to get the Kept Animals Bill back on track to becoming law. It will make Pet Theft a specific offence with proper punishments to hopefully deter the career criminals.
We need pet theft to be less of a high reward low risk of any punishment activity, as it is literally breaking people's hearts. I heard of three separate su***de attempts from people devastated by pet theft.
Why does our PM keep forgetting the Kept Animals Bill?
A template letter is available via Battersea Rescue so you can add your voice to those reminding him it's long overdue: https://lnkd.in/eMiPdAst...
This is a copy of the letter which you can use:
Dear
I hope this finds you well.
I am writing to urge you to bring back the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill to Parliament.
As you know, the Government introduced the Bill as a key part of its Action Plan for Animal Welfare in 2021, intended to underline the UK’s commitment to acting as a world leader in animal welfare.
It will introduce several important provisions, including enabling the closure of loopholes allowing the importation of animals with horrific mutilations, such as dogs with cropped ears and declawed cats, stopping puppy smuggling.
However, the Bill has now not been debated in Parliament since its Committee Stage in the House of Commons in November 2021. In the meantime, animals are being forgotten, smuggled into the country in low welfare and dangerous conditions, off radar, and with no traceability. It also means that the planned introduction of a new pet abduction offence, added to the Bill through Government amendment, has also stalled.
We’ve heard repeatedly that the Bill will be brought forward ‘as soon as parliamentary time allows’, but after over a year of no progress, now is the time for action.
I am calling on you to honour your manifesto commitments, by bringing the Bill forward as a matter of urgency and underlining the Government’s commitment to protecting and promoting animal welfare.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response on this matter.
With best wishes,
You can find your MPs email address on this link: https://lnkd.in/ePqwaenx

I'm just back from attending my first ever Pet Tech Meet-up in Austria. The aim is to find investors and collaborators to enable us to build a better world for dogs, to give The Bark Angel the runway it needs to really take off!
Thank you so much to Kim Bill and Jeanne Chatelle for the UNLEASHED by Purina meet up in Linz. My mind was blown by Aussie supervet Garnett Hall (Drop Bear expert). He's invented a chip that communicates where your dog is plus all their vital signs and a global chip database!
This next generation chip is the answer to so many pet owner's prayers.
I met Katelijne Bekers from Germany who has invented a new protein that doesn't involve bugs, an Irish academic pioneering a new treat that will help dogs with arthritis, and an amazing Mexican biologist JACKELINE PALMA who has a gene test that could revolutionise dog health. And a Dutch pet sitting website called Petbnb.nl - what a very cool name!
Start ups wore blue badges, potential investors wore red, it was like speed dating mixed with Dragons Den!
Lovely to meet Dr George Shelton in real life rather than over zoom and at the next meet up hopefully his CompanionPass will mean his lovely dog can come, too! And I previously had no idea how very tall the young boss of the excellent HonestDog was!
So many start ups that can and will help each other.
My concept - the Bark Angel - has the dream of changing the way consumers acquire dogs in the future - to make provenance matter. To achieve its aims it will also amplify all the best dog professionals and dog companies that want to improve the dog's world.
We'll create a meritocracy and a safe space so that every dog has a better chance of being in a home for life.
So thank you so much PURINA for creating a safe space for the young start ups to find their feet. And thank you to Kamalini Hull for being the first person with a red badge I dared to approach!
One of the investors revealed that he had previously designed the first satellite that went to Mars. And that pretty much summed up UNLEASHED at Linz. Everything was out of this world!
Instead of a business card, I gave my only copy of Dogs Today's latest edition to James Henderson who literally is Epic (that's the name of his investment company!). His recent business wins include an early stage investment in Denzel's treats, a company which has all the signs of growing into a unicorn - so in retrospect he could more than have afforded the cover price!
I came home to find an email from one of the largest ethical training organisations wanting to collaborate with the Bark Angel.
So it's not just my heart fluttering with all this excitement, I think the Bark Angel may soon be stretching her wings!
I'm sorry if I've not tagged everyone I met, it was lovely to meet up briefly with BorrowMyDoggy's inspirational founder Rikke Rosenlund. I think she was just about to talk to cofounder of the groundbreaking ZigZag training app Patrick Luke that I'm a huge fan of - so sorry about that!
The event was all over much too quickly!
So much left to say.
I do hope we all get to meet up again and help each other change the dog's world!
Thank you again UNLEASHED and to the awesome host Tractive.

Honey was an Angel on her first walk now her season has finished. A 9 week old Cavapoo was in the pub, two French Bulldog, a Rottie and a little terrier cross. What breeds are you seeing where you live?

Here's something I've been working on for a while! Do give me any feedback if you get a chance, which do you prefer... a page summary, an in-depth article with lovely photos or the bite-sized breed reports?

I think there's room for all three formats.

What we do need is altruistic experts for every type of dog. Could that be you?

Bark Angels come in many forms

This page has a glitch so apologies if you get this post a few times, but I wanted to tell you about some innovations on the website www.thebarkangel.co.uk.

We've added the first four breed reports - the result of talking to more than 20,000 pet owners. We have detailed surveys that give unique insights into what it is like to live with each type of dog.

Do check them out!

More changes to the website, please do have a look and tell me what you think!

Looking for the good guys in the dog world that want to help prevent people making terrible mistakes! Maybe you normally clean up after the mess and would like to help avoid so many broken dogs?

Could you help people choose which breed would suit them? Maybe you're a breed expert? Or someone in breed rescue would prefer to help avoid the wrong person getting their breed? Perhaps you used to be a Dial-A-Dog advisor and you'd like to be one again?.

A new program for socializing puppies in the nest brings big benefits, study shows.

Just pointing this one out… so I don’t get another dog… and a divorce!

REHOMED

Domino is a 3yr old tri coloured Beagle, she is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, flea and worm treated and has a clean bill of health. She will be rehomed with 5 weeks free pet insurance.

Domino joined us from our friends shelter in Egypt where she was unwanted any longer by her owners. She is one of the lucky ones who came straight to us and hasnt been neglected badly like so many poor souls there. She is actually in fab condition.

Domino is an absolutely LOVELY girl, she is a really sweet dog who loves a fuss and isn't your typical non stop beagle, she loves a run and a play and enjoys lovely long walks but inside the home she settles down and loves a nice warm cosy bed by the radiator or fire to snooze in.

She is fantastic here with all other dogs of any size and has previously lived with other beagles so we are looking for a home ideally with another hound type to be friends with, she definitely needs another neutered dog in her new home, beagles dont do well as only dogs. Domino is also great with cats and her temperament is sound so we are happy to consider homes with gentle dog savvy children aged 6yrs and over.

She will need a very active home who can provide her with plenty of long, stimulating walks and a nice large fully enclosed garden to play in, she is ok being left for a few hours but wouldnt be happy being left all day. She walks ok on the lead, we don't know how good her recall is yet. She travels ok in the car and is housetrained.

Being fostered in Swadlincote, Derbys but can be rehomed further afield subject to homecheck and donation of £300

If you can offer an active home to this wonderful girl ASAP then please email us telling us all about your home offer and contact details to [email protected]

Truth 🤣

We love a failed fosterer :) Lovely senior girl Thelma arrived with us from the pound as a stray in a bit of a state with a smelly overgrown coat, a mouthful of bad teeth, a mammory lump and not even a chip, she also has some arthritis too. Now all her vet work has been completed her foster mum just cant bear to part with this lovely lady so she has gone and bagged herself her forever home :)
