Teaching a dog impulse control is a great way to encourage calmer behaviour. A dog is learning to control their natural impulses and is less likely to become frustrated.

If we repeatedly go into a dog's space to take something away it can teach them to be possessive. Training a positive 'drop' cue can be really useful. This is Gino demonstrating his drop with a squeaky tennis ball, a really high value item for Gino.

Love this video. Some common human body language that can make our dogs feel uncomfortable!

Training a 'stop' cue is important where a dog might be running towards or away from you towards a hazard. I've started training this with Gino approaching.

Love this picture of delightful Indonesian Bali Crossbreed Honey. It is quite unusual. As a previous street dog Honey tends to prefer settling on a higher level surface. Feel so lucky to be working with wonderful dogs like Honey and their humans.

This is gorgeous young cockapoo pup Bobbi demonstrating a focused sit and wait at the end of her training session. Bobbi is extremely keen to learn and very responsive to training. She did brilliantly today, quickly picking up some new skills with the support of her human partner and lots of positive reinforcement. Well done Bobbi!!!

Help your dog meet its potential! Canine Potential is a West Oxfordshire based professional and supportive dog training and behaviour consultation service. I am committed to kind methods of dog training and behaviour modification that are geared to the unique needs of your individual puppy or older canine. Under current government restrictions I can do visits providing that social distancing can be maintained. I can also provide help remotely. Do get in touch if you need support on [email protected].

PUPPY TRAINING SESSIONS:
Do you want a well trained, well adjusted and responsive pup and would you like some help towards this? Would some pointers on house-training, heel-work, recall or other training be useful? One to one sessions will help to encourage and reinforce desirable behaviour and address your dog's specific needs at their own pace with a chance for you to ask lots of questions.

ASSESSMENT AND BEHAVIOUR CONSULTATIONS:
Are you finding some areas of your dog's behaviour difficult to manage? Is your dog showing signs of fear, anxiety, frustration, inappropriate elimination, destructive or unruly behaviour? I can work with you and your dog to assess and develop a flexible behaviour plan in which commitment, consistency and building positive associations for your dog will be central.

My masters degree included the psychology of animal behaviour. I have an Advanced Diploma in Applied Canine Behaviour with distinction and over fifteen years experience with dogs. This included working for the National Animal Welfare Trust, working as a volunteer trainer for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and latterly for Medical Detection Dogs for nine years, socialising and training pups to circa eighteen months of age, and addressing a range of behaviour issues. I look forward to hearing from you!
