After the heroic efforts of Animals Lost and Found in Kent Ltd, whose free event on 20th April resulted in 109 pets being microchipped, we thought we'd re-share our step by step guide on keeping your pets microchip details up to date.

Step 1: Firstly, you'll need your pets microchip number. If you don't have it to hand, call your registered vet as it should be recorded alongside your pets other details. Failing that, ANY vet will scan your pet free of charge. Once you have the number, write it down and keep it safe.

Step 2: Enter the chip number on the website www.check-a-chip.co.uk. This will show you which company the chip is held with.

Step 3: Visit the company website as advised via check-a-chip and from there, either give them a call or use their online service to update the microchip.

The process stays the same if you have an unregistered chip or a foreign one that needs to be moved to an English database.

There will be a cost involved which varies from company to company.

If the chip isn't in your name to begin with, you may need to wait 4 weeks for the update to become valid.

Avoid www.petchipdetails.uk & www.allpaws.info as they are fraudulent websites posing as legitimate microchip databases. They will charge you £18.95 via PayPal, but DO NOT have the authority to update/register/transfer a microchip.
