A-GRADE DOGS doing some natural agility! Do your dogs love being active?
SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT ON ….. WHISTLE RECALL!
Let’s talk whistles! Have you ever tried a whistle to call your dog, and if you have, how successful was it?
Here’s the thing - a whistle, at first, can be an interesting sound to your dog and you may well initially get the attention, and even recall response you’ve been hoping for. However, without reinforcement, any advantage you think you’ve gained may fade away over time as that interesting noise becomes ….. well, valueless!
Here at A-Grade we believe in the importance of a solid recall, and that, properly trained, a whistle can become a crucial tool to call upon, especially in those highly distracting situations where your voice might not cut it! However, the key to an amazing whistle recall is in preparation and training rather than just expectation, so that your dog views a whistle (and by extension, you) as the most amazing sound resulting in a super fast return!
Are you struggling with your puppy or dog’s recall? With positive, kind and force-free techniques, we can help!
So give us a whistle, or drop an email to [email protected] and let’s get started on that journey to a better, more reliable recall!

Introducing Rebal! This handsome young chap is with A-Grade to upskill his obedience including recall, and he is a very clever boy! Here he is learning to “leave”!
At the start of our session, Arlow really didn’t like/was wary of his new ramp, but after helping him get used to the surface, then the gradient, and pairing good things with taking each small step, here he is after an hour happily participating in going up and down the ramp! Yay Arlow, what a boy! @followers
It’s never too early to learn and puppies are such quick learners! Here is Nelson at 12 weeks old being taught to recall - what a (not so wee!) star! 🌟
Today’s superstar is Atlas! As part of his training session this morning he learned the cue “leave” ….. and not just anything, here is Atlas leaving chicken! Leave is an essential cue to help your dog understand there are things which may be dangerous to him, and also to teach a puppy when chewing the table leg may not be appropriate! 🌟
Just had to post “Ivy Turnabout Recall part 2” - after learning this recall manoeuvre in the morning, here she is demonstrating it outdoors the same afternoon! Oh Ivy! 🌟 🌟
Oh Ivy! Barely 11 weeks old and here she is mastering the art of a “turnabout” recall! This technique is so valuable when your puppy or dog is in chase mode, and teaches them to listen and “turn about” despite the distraction(s) they face - great job Ivy! 🌟 PS. She also learned some hand signals, and to “leave” chicken!
Because training never ends! #stay #recall #impulsecontrol #solidstay #fastrecall #puppytraining #dogtraining #positive #kind #forcefree
Here is 10wk old puppy Arlow honing his recall skills with a “Turnabout” recall! This recall technique helps teach a puppy/dog to turn about and return to owner despite facing distractions! Great work young Arlow! 🌟

Puppy Max learning recall - including the invisible hurdle between rooms! A wee star!
Puppy Archie and his owners have been working hard on his whistle recall, which as you can see from the video, is proving very successful!
Quote from owner Lynne today … “First day using the whistle outside and it’s going so well, thank you! Mind blowing from seven days ago to now!”
Recall is a massively important aspect of training both for safety and control, as it allows your dog the enjoyment of freedom in safe spaces, and that you’re able to get him back should you need to. Adding a whistle to your recall “toolbox” can give you an edge especially when your dog is faced with high levels of distraction - but beware, just peeping a whistle won’t cut it, your dog has to be trained to the whistle for it to be effective!

As part of her “Trick & Treat” trick training course, lovely Maddie has learned a number of new, fun tricks, including “Ring The Bell” at today’s session - well done clever Maddie! ❤️ 🐾 🔔
SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT ON …. TRICK TRAINING!
Teaching your dog tricks is an excellent way to mentally stimulate them, it’s a great bonding experience and can be really good fun for you both!
Before you dismiss teaching your dog tricks as irrelevant or useless, consider the possibility that this training still encourages listening skills and communication, just in a different way.
With Winter fast approaching, having some fun ways of entertaining your dog indoors can also be invaluable! As an example, see video below of Willow “Ringing The Bell!”

When working with puppies/dogs which are nervous, anxious and/or fearful, it is difficult to predict how much progress might be made, how long it might take to see even the smallest step etc, but rather better to explain that the best way forward is patience and understanding coupled with sound, positive behavioural modification techniques designed to help. To set the scene, my first session with Nuala was mainly spent with me on the floor, allowing Nuala to become a little more comfortable with me, capturing and rewarding any moments of relaxation and acceptance of my being in the room, coupled with talking her owner through next steps for her to practice.
Imagine my surprise and utter delight in session two today when I was presented with a much more confident, indeed brave Nuala who was happy to see me and because she was much more at ease, we were then able to work on training some recall. I am going to attribute this to Nuala’s lovely, patient owner, who listened to all of my advice then crucially followed through and was rewarded with amazing results!
There’s some way to go, but wow Nuala, you are a wee changed girl and are much happier for it! Moments like this remind me of how rewarding this vocation is, and why I love it so much ❤️ 🐾
FRIDAY FUN! Here is a video of Bonnie, being played a video of me calling another dog Archie …. clearly Bonnie thought the recall was for her and responded accordingly! 😂 🐾 #Recall #Dog #Puppy #Training #DogTraining #PuppyTraining
If this doesn’t make you smile, nothing will! Here is 9wk old Archie at his first training session, beginning to learn the skill of recall with great enthusiasm, and including a pic of him sound asleep afterwards!
Bertie’s owner originally contacted A-Grade for help with his lack of listening skills and recall, as Bertie was prone to chasing cars, bicycles etc. Below is a testimonial of progress to date:
"Sandra was recommended to me to give guidance with Bertie's training. He's a border/ bearded collie cross. We had a 4 week block of beginners training with Bertie. Sandra was enthusiastic, encouraging & we all looked forward to her training sessions in our own settings. It was as much training us as him! Continuity of commands ( the shorter the better!) reward & praise were very important elements & we have continued to keep this up after our 4 sessions with Sandra. I think he's struck the adolescent stage which presents its own challenges, but we'll persevere with all Sandra's great advice. Bertie's now 9 months old & we love him. Thank you Sandra."
