This is what having horses is all about 🐎❤️

A wonderful day spent at show yesterday, with Dan, Ben, Princess and Oakley - who were all superstars!

My mum, Sophia and Maddison and I had so much fun and came away with huge smiles and a pile of rosettes!

It's not about being the best, it's about friendship and fun. I'm proud to be a part of these kids riding education and I hope they remember this day in years to come, I certainly will ❤️

Let's talk about when it doesn't go right!

These pictures suggest I had a lovely time jumping Dan at Felbridge - which I did. However, I also think it could have gone a lot better. We warmed up brilliantly, jumping from a consistent canter (which for a trotter is a hard task). When we went into the ring, Dan reverted to his trotter routes, became very tense and jumped every fence like it was going to eat him! I felt like I let him down with my riding - but that's OK!

I've learnt that he needs more SJ experience, at different venues and to realise he is still very green in this area despite his age and expertise on the hunt field.

We've come a long way in the last 7 years and we've got a long way to go!

What a wonderfully busy weekend I've had!

Saturday saw us welcome a new member of the gang - rising 3yo Welsh cob, Keeper ❤️ Then Finn and Ben had an outing to to test out the course which was great fun!

Sunday was show central! First stop was for their Easter show where many of my clients were competing.
I was there to support the lovely Kerry with Sandycove who she bought from me a few years ago - they smashed his first show, coming 2nd and 3rd (despite Sandy rolling in the middle of the ring!) Another client Aimee was taking her boy Royal for his first outing, along with her daughter and her pony - they all did wonderfully and even picked up a qualification!

I then nipped over to to support my client Sophia jumping the 60cm and 70cm with Princess. The pair have been aiming for a clear at 70cm. Not only did they achieve this but they also won the class with a super speedy jump off!

A few lessons and rides for clients on top of all of that too! As always I'm ever so grateful to call this my job ❤️

Oh hi! 👋

Not your usual pony focused photo from me, but my cheesey grin! It's the t-shirt I want to focus on though.
I'm very proud to say I've just finished my first half term of teaching for . I've been training with the Horsley, Bookham and Leatherhead branch since November and aim to have my assessment in May to become a fully qualified coach. The last 6 months have been so eye opening! I've met some wonderful riders, volunteers and ponies and every one of them has taught me something and improved my coaching in some way!
Hats off to absolutely everyone involved in this charity, the hours of hard work that go into running even one half hour session is incredible. I'll write more on this further on in my journey, but for now I want to say if you can donate any of your time to your local RDA centre they would be beyond grateful!

I've just finished working with this sassy young mare. She was a pleasure and a challenge!
Mia's owner contacted me to ask if I could help get her back on track. She is only 4 and her owner felt over horsed as Mia had really started challenging her both on the ground and ridden. We took Mia right back to basics with long reining before gently introducing mounting and ridden work. All about teaching her to think for herself whilst respecting the boundaries put in place. She has now gone off to sales livery to find her a home that suits ❤️ I'm so lucky to have fun, interesting projects like this!

Quote of the week came from Rozi... "Oh my goodness, so this is why people enjoy jumping!" Yes! Jumping is FUN!

We have spent a lot of time working on strengthening and securing Rozi's lower leg, and also working on her bravery when jumping. Doing this brush filler was a huge deal for her and I think you can tell just how proud I am by the enthusiasm in my voice!

Just goes to show how important it is to take your time building the foundations with riding, then suddenly it all clicks into place! There will be no stopping this pair now 🤩

The smile on my face says it all 🤩❤️ I adore this job!
These two girlies have been a partnership for just 2 months and a few weeks ago we ventured to their first show. Maddison rode beautifully despite Angel being a tad full of herself, and I got my steps in for the day!
Plus they came away with a 1st! 🥇

Ever so proud of this pair today!

I sold Sandycove Island to the lovely Kerry a few years ago - they have had their fair share of ups and downs, but Sandy (Andy) is back fighting fit.

Today they had their first jump in over a year and it made all 3 of us very very happy!

So lucky to call this passion work! ❤️🏇

A really interesting, worthwhile read - I didn't know this about red worm and it will change the way I worm my horses

*** ENCYSTED REDWORM ***

I first posted this in 2019, but after reading a LOT of worrying comments recently about how people don’t worm their horses at all, as they do worm egg counts, I thought it was time to do a little encysted redworm refresher, with some updates!

1. Redworm can kill your horse.

2. You need to worm for encysted redworm AFTER they encyst, and before they emerge, so NOT in the Autumn! Wait for a good, frosty cold spell.

3. Encysted small redworm are NOT DETECTABLE in worm egg counts.

4. The larvae of small redworm, “encyst” or burrow into the gut wall. These can cause fatal consequences when they re-emerge.

5. Redworm appear as tiny pieces of thread in your horse’s droppings. They are very short and thin, and can be hard to see. They are white if they haven’t yet fed, and red if they have fed.

6. A horse can appear completely normal and healthy whilst carrying a large redworm burden. However, weight loss and diarrhoea may be early indicators; don’t ignore these signs.

7. Most wormers DO NOT target encysted redworm. Only TWO do: Fenbendazole and Moxidectin.

8. Lots of combination wormers contain IVERMectin. This WILL NOT have any effect on encysted redworm. The only wormer that contains MOXIDectin, is EQUEST. The Pramox (blue) version will treat tapeworm at the same time. Don’t use Pramox if you have treated separately for tapeworm, or used a saliva or blood test for tapeworm. Use the normal Equest (green) if this is the case.

9. Redworm are eaten by the horse during grazing. The larvae start to burrow into the gut wall as temperatures drop. Treating for encysted redworm whilst temperatures are warm, is not the optimal time, as the larvae may well not have started to encyst. Treating after a few hard frosts, also reduces the level of reinfection from larvae already on the fields.

10. The larvae stay in the gut wall during the winter, and are then triggered to emerge from the gut wall as the temperatures warm up in the Spring. If the horse has not been treated for redworm during this redworm “hibernation” stage, he/she is at risk of developing CYATHOSTOMINOSIS.

11. Cyathostominosis has a mortality (death) rate of up to 50%. It presents as colitis; profuse diarrhoea and colic. Contact your vet immediately if you see these symptoms in your horse at any time of year, but it is more likely to be due to redworm if this occurs in the Spring.

12. Ensure you have treated for encysted
redworm before temperatures start to increase as Spring arrives, incase of a large encysted redworm burden that may suddenly emerge.

13. There is a blood test for all stages of redworm, including encysted. This detects antibodies, so may be positive if your horse has had a high burden in the past 6 months, even if he currently doesn’t, but worth discussing with your vet. I would not be recommending this route for high risk redworm horses ie horses in herds with no poo picking, or rescue cases.

14. 5 day Panacur Guard (Fenbendazole) is the only other wormer that can treat the encysted stage of redworm. There was widespread resistance to this wormer, and a huge move towards everyone using Moxidectin for encysted redworm. It is my wormer of choice for very sick or poor horses, due to its milder action over 5 days. However, there is some evidence that it may cause more damage to the gut than Moxidectin, so more research is definitely required!

15. Poo picking daily is perfect pasture management, but does not mean that your horse is worm free! You still need to egg count/blood test for all worms and/or worm.

16. Herbal wormers do not work.

17. Worm egg counts do not detect encysted redworms (or tapeworm/bots/pinworm). I realise I am repeating myself, but this is something that lots of people still do not realise.

18. Do not UNDERDOSE when worming, as this will aid resistance. If in doubt, add 50kg to the weigh tape weight of your horse. Wormers are very safe with regards to toxic doses.

19. The Mole Valley wormers are NOT the same as Equest!!!! I saw this misinformation posted yesterday! They contain Ivermectin, which will NOT treat for encysted redworm.

20. Do NOT overuse Equest. Moxidectin (Equest and Pramox) should only be used ONCE in a 12 month period. So know when to use it!

This is not an exhaustive review of redworm, and I may add to the list if I think of anything else, but I hope this is of some use! Worming regimes and what worm egg counts detect, seems to cause lots of confusion amongst horse owners, and even yard owners.

Blood tests currently used for tapeworm and redworm, measure antibody levels to the worm. The saliva test also measures antibodies. The concern here would be false positives. This means the test coming back as positive when your horse has been clear of the worm in question for months. Antibody levels remain high for months following successful treatment for the worm being tested for. However, a negative obviously means the horse has been clear for a good few months, and would not need worming.

Happy reading!

Please share, as this is really something that all horse owners should know, and still don’t!

No prizes for spotting the hundreds of redworm in this photo!

An exciting new venture for me coming very soon (as long as I pass my training!) I'll be leading some new sessions for Horsley, Bookham and Leatherhead RDA and we need volunteers to come along and help with the riders and ponies!

Volunteers needed!

We are starting 2 new RDA sessions to tackle our ever long wait list and we’d love to find new volunteers to join us.

Saturday morning starting from w/c 19th February – 3x 30 minute sessions (9.30-11am) so volunteers needed 9-11.15am to help get ponies ready. Working with young children with a range of abilities. Volunteers can start from 12 years old, if accompanied by an adult, or 14 unsupervised, DoE welcome. No age limit.

Tuesday evenings from April – 2x 30 minute sessions (7.15-8.15) so volunteers needed 6.30-8.30pm to help get ponies ready. Teens, young adults and adult riders with a range of abilities.

Sessions are run term time only in a purpose built, indoor arena so suitable for all weather! Training provided so no prior experience or horsey knowledge needed although preferable.

A chance to work with some incredible children and adults and make a real impact in their lives. You will see them transform over time with the positive impact our ponies have on them both physically and mentally. A chance to get some gentle exercise and meet new friends Tea, coffee, biscuits and lots of laughs included!

Brave pants on to start 2024!
Finn reminded me that with his help I can jump bigger than 2ft! 🤣 He has the scope but I'm very rusty with show jumps as most of the jumping I do these days is out hunting (hence jumping like it's a hedge when he takes a flyer!)
After a pop over a cross pole to start with we were happily flying round an 80-90cm course. Its been about 4 years since I had a horse with the ability to jump at this height, so it's more of a mental battle with myself. Luckily Finn is awesome and so very honest that he makes it easy, he says bigger jumps next time!
