VB Focus: 👨⚕️ Harvest Mites 🪳
These are tiny, bright orange mites that live in the soil and are found in woodland and grassy areas around this time of year.
They can attached anywhere on your dog's body but are often found on the feet, in between the toes, ears, armpits and ge****ls. These bugs feed on blood and can often cause intense itchiness where they feed.
Symptoms include:
- red, inflamed, damaged skin 🔴
- saliva staining to the fur 🟤
- bright orange specks on the skin 🟠
- pus in the skin 🟡
There is no licensed treatment available for this condition but often involves application of flea-killing medications topically to the mites. Some animals may require anti-inflammatory or medications to help reduce itching. Occasionally, antibiotics may be required to clear up any skin infections.
Prevention using regular flea medications is best and avoiding areas known to contain mites.
Contact your vet if you see your dog scratching excessively or if you find mites on their skin and fur.
