Something us dog owners see all the time but remains a mystery, why do dogs spin in circles before having a poop? Let’s look at some theories 😆
🐾 Finding the perfect spot
Dogs could be patting down the grass to scare off any creepy crawlies and make a nice clean place to do their business. This is also a chance to check for scents left by other animals that have been in the area. Whilst circling they can get a 360 degree view of the surroundings ensuring there are no threats nearby as when they squat they feel more vulnerable.
🐾 Creating a movement
Yes, there is a theory that dogs make a circle action which could actually help to stimulate the bowels!
🐾 Earths magnetic axis (our favourite theory!)
One theory was researched in 2013 by Czech and German researchers that determined in a study of 70 dogs across 37 different breeds, many circled to line their bodies up with the earth’s magnetic axis. Crazy right?
Some dogs will never do the circle dance and it appears that not all dogs do it every time they need to go either. So the ‘why’ is not something that can be fully explained yet, but it is normal dog behaviour!
Next time you are outside waiting for your dog whilst they sniff and move about until that perfect spot is located, it might make a lot more sense why the first spot they had their eye on wasn’t quite right… must find that north-south axis 😂 (let’s just hope it’s not raining🌧️)

With Easter just around the corner everyone’s going to have a whole load of chocolate around the house (yay😍)! In 2019 companion animal vets across the UK were asked if they seen any cases of chocolate poisoning in pets during the 2017 Easter holiday, out of the 850 vets that completed the survey on average, 60% reported having treated at least one case!
If your dog does manage to eat chocolate, the effects of poisoning usually appear within 12 hours. The first symptoms can include excessive thirst, vomiting, diarrhoea and restlessness. If your dog displays any of these symptoms or you are worried about their wellbeing, get them seen by a vet immediately!
When dogs are not displaying any symptoms but have consumed chocolate the level of concern can vary, in some cases it won't always be nescassry for a dog to have veterinary treatment and this depends on several factors. It’s with very heavy hearts we are writing this post in memory of Wolfie, who sadly crossed the rainbow bridge after a recent unprovoked dog attack.
We have often said that the best part of being on the market is we always get to meet the most beautiful dogs, and Wolfie was just that. He brought a smile to our faces every time we seen him and whilst we only knew Wolfie for a small fraction of his life, we can only imagine the happiness he brought to his family.
Wolfie was an Irish Wolfhound x Poodle puppy, when we first met him, it was instantly obvious to us that he was a gentle, old soul, with not a bad bone in his body. It breaks our hearts to know his life was cut so short in such an unjust way, he was taken far too soon but he crossed the rainbow bridge knowing he was loved.
If anyone wishes to leave any kind words in the comments, I’m sure Wolfies mum would love to read them.
We will miss seeing you kind face Wolfie.
