What is a forage replacer and when might I feed one? 🤔
A forage replacer is a feedstuff which is nutritionally comparable to forage (hay/haylage/grass) and which can be fed to replace all or part of this important element of a horse’s diet.

You will need a forage replacer when:
✨ A horse or pony has really poor teeth and can no longer graze or chew the long fibre of hay or haylage.
✨ Your horse is fussy about their hay or haylage and is perhaps eating less than the equivalent of 1.5% of their bodyweight per day in forage.
✨ Your horse is a poor-doer and your hay or haylage is of poor nutritional quality and quite stalky and indigestible.

Ensuring optimum forage intake provides important fibre calories and is essential to support healthy gut function so the horse can make the most of the rest of their diet.

Options for total forage replacement include:
Natural Meadow Cobs, Fibre-Beet, Light Chaff

Options for partial forage replacement include:
❤️Low calorie – Light Chaff, Natural Meadow Cobs, Fibre Plus Nuggets
❤️ Higher calorie – Alfalfa Blend, Alfalfa Plus Oil, Fibre-Beet, Speedi-Beet, Ultra Grass

Forage replacers should be fed separate from any hard feed, as a “haynet in a bucket”.
Offering more than one option, alongside their hay or haylage where appropriate, will encourage natural foraging behaviour as your horse browses from one to another.
