Be careful what narrative you put to your dogs' behaviour. Just because you think it makes sense to you, doesn't make it the truth.

Common false narratives include:

šŸ¾ He is protecting me
šŸ¾ He is trying to be the top dog
šŸ¾ He is stubbornly refusing to do it anymore
šŸ¾ He is punishing me for doing X
šŸ¾ He is trying to control the house
šŸ¾ He thinks he is a [insert bigger dog breed here]

We are deeply saddened to learn of Karen Pryor's passing. She was a pioneer in animal training and behaviour whose contributions have shaped modern dog training as we know it. Her innovative approach and entrepreneurial spirit transformed the industry, paving the way for countless trainers and animals to benefit from science-based, positive reinforcement methods.

Karenā€™s work extended far beyond the Karen Pryor Academy, which has educated and inspired trainers worldwide. Her book, Donā€™t Shoot the Dog, introduced an entire generation of trainers to the principles of clicker training and remains a cornerstone of dog training literature. The annual Clicker Expos she founded became vital opportunities for professional growth, collaboration, and community-building within the field. Her legacy also includes Reaching the Animal Mind, a profound exploration of the science and art of animal training.

Karenā€™s vision, intelligence, and compassion revolutionised how we communicate with and understand our canine companions. Her contributions have had a lasting impact on the lives of trainers and the dogs they work and live with. She will be greatly missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire and guide the animal training community for generations to come.

Our thoughts are with Karenā€™s family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.

This is the start of building up a dogs confidence around something that they are scared of. For Bella, it's the hoover. As a rescue dog who is settling into her new home, it's amazing that her new family are on board to helping her in all areas of her routine.

Thank you to Charlie's humans for such a lovely review. šŸ˜ On the whole, Charlie is able to glance at and look away from 'spooky' things that would have previously upset him and so their walks together are much happier.

N.B His collar is a GPS tracker. Not an aversion tool.

The real horror is people doing this and not seeing their animal struggle. šŸ˜”

Other pitfalls of dressing up dogs is that they use their bodies to communicate to other dogs and so we inhibit that ability. Like, that is unacceptable. We all deserve access to communication

Also it encourages adults and kids to move closer to a dressed up dog due to the novelty of it all and the dog may absolutely not want that!! This is how dogs can feel under pressure and then have to react šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«

This is the Bucket Game by Chirag Patel that offers your dog the game of consent. This is a cooperative care interaction which helps you and your dog to communicate through difficult handling procedures.
We are hoping that this work will help Loki in the long term at the vet. He did soooo well! šŸ‘

Understanding Your Dogā€™s ā€œMicro-Momentsā€ of Communication šŸ¾

We often focus on the big, obvious signals our dogs give usā€”like barking or wagging their tailsā€”but have you ever paid attention to the subtle micro-moments of communication? These tiny signals, like a flicker of their eyes or a brief pause in movement, are your dogā€™s way of conveying what theyā€™re feeling or thinking.

šŸ’” Insight: The CDD method teaches us to be aware of these small, often overlooked signals. A dogā€™s slight head tilt or a quick glance can tell you theyā€™re processing something or feeling a shift in their emotions.

šŸ“£ Discussion: Have you noticed these micro-moments with your dog? How do you respond when they give you subtle signals? Letā€™s explore this hidden language together!

This totally made my week. My client Maro's human, writes and illustrates comics.

At our resent session, I made a wee faux pax and accidently said the work 'CUTE' instead of 'CAUTIOUS'. I said I must have had the work 'cute' on my brain as that's just what Maro is! We had a little giggle!

Then... Maro's human told me she had put the moment into a comic!! Adorable!

Here it is!!!! šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Please Please Please read this extremely important post about PAIN IN DOGS! Dynamic Dog

This is becoming a welfare issue!

Im tired of hearing ā€œthe vet says there is no painā€ by a guardian after they have taken their dog to the vet. It leaves me deflated and frustrated and feeling so sorry for the dog.

Myth Bust:

PAIN CANNOT BE RULED OUT IN ANY ANIMAL (dog, cat, horse or hamster), by anyone!

* A quick palpation - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

WHY?

The dog may shut down due to environmental factors or dislike of a strange human touching them, they keep still to get it over with ASAP!

The dog may be over aroused or overwhelmed by the clinical environment (excited/scared etc) to the point that adrenaline is so high it blocks pain!

* Blood Tests - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

There is currently NO blood test that can detect pain.

* Diagnostic imaging - CANNOT RULE OUT PAIN

Yes they can pick up a variety of conditions, but even the GOLD standard MRI doesnā€™t pick up everything, but NONE of them can detect PAIN.

Just because a source cannot be found doesnā€™t mean there is no pain.

PAIN is subjective, it is whatever that being (human or animal) perceives it to be!

Pain can come in many different forms, it is extremely complex, and can effect the individual in many different ways. A dog may get injured, the injury may have healed, but the pain remains ā€¦ this is known as maladaptive pain.

Behaviour can be a HUGE indicator for PAIN:

* There could be a change of behaviour that has been directly caused by PAIN.

* There could be a worsening of behaviour due to an increase or new presence of PAIN.

* There could be a lack of ā€œnormalā€ behaviour due to PAIN.

* There could be behaviours that are present but that the guardian/owner donā€™t deem to be problematic that are indicators of PAIN.

* The dog may have ALWAYS displayed behaviours that are indicators of PAIN, but they have been ignored and put down to ā€œjust the way they areā€.

* There may be NO problematic behaviours at all ā€¦. And the dog might still be in PAIN!

* The dog might be energetic, always on the go ā€¦ and still be in PAIN.

* The dog might be lazy ā€¦ and still be in PAIN.

* The dog may zoom up and down stairs ā€¦ and still be in PAIN.

Diagnosing PAIN is not simple and can be difficult to get on top of.

A PAIN relief trail can be great! But often only one type of analgesic is tried and sometimes this doesnā€™t get results leading to the ASSUMPTION that there is no PAIN!

Hereā€™s why:

* The drug was only trialed for 2 weeks - when living with chronic pain it can take longer to relieve. 2 weeks is not enough.

* The drug used wasnā€™t targeted to the type of pain the animal is feeling; soft tissue, bone, nerve or a combination of all.

It might take a number of different medications or a combination OVER TIME to see a difference.

ALWAYS keep in mind, NO ONE can rule out another beingā€™s PAIN.

NO ONE. Not me. Not you. Not a Doctor. Not a Vet.

Do you get really cross about fireworks?
Do you share photos or videos of your stressed dogs on social media?

Although we know fireworks can be awful, it doesnā€™t have to be that way for your dog and in fact YOU have a big responsibility to make sure it isnā€™t.

This year weā€™d love to help you do things differently.

Learn to help your dog feel relaxed first and focus on supporting your dog who doesn't have anyone else to advocate for them.
