1. Create a Safe Space: Provide a quiet, comfortable area where your dog can retreat during fireworks.
This could be a cozy den or a covered crate lined with soft blankets. @ 2
2. Desensitization and Counterconditioning:
Gradually expose your dog to the sounds of fireworks at a low volume while rewarding them with treats. This can help them associate the noise with positive experiences. © 1
3. Walk Early: Take your dog for a walk earlier in the day before fireworks are likely to start. This helps reduce the chances of being outside when the noise begins. G 2
4. Close Windows and Curtains: Keep windows and curtains closed to minimize the sight and sound of fireworks. This can help create a more secure environment for your dog. 2
5. Calming Music: Play calming music or use specially designed playlists for dogs to help mask the sound of fireworks. Start playing the music a few days in advance to help your dog get used to it. G 2
6. Consult Your Vet: If your dog shows severe anxiety during fireworks, consult your veterinarian.
They may recommend behavioral therapy or medication to help manage your dog’s fear.
