Prevention of neonatal disease works on 4 key areas of lambing based around management and hygiene.

𝟭) 𝗘𝘄𝗲𝘀:
a. 𝗡𝘂𝘁𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - throughout pregnancy to maintain the ewes condition and produce good quality colostrum.
b. 𝗖𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 - can reduce the risk of accidental ingestion of faces in the newborn while it looks for the teat
c. 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - Against abortion, lameness and Clostridial diseases.

𝟮) 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴:
a. 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 - enough lying and feeding space.
b. 𝗕𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 - fresh straw and lime under between groups and individual pens.
c. 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀 - isolating thin, lame or sick ewes from healthier ones.

𝟯) 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
a. 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 - hot water, hand soap, fresh dry towels.
b. 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 - of buckets, and lambing feed equipment (can sterilize these after use with milton tablets designed for baby bottles).
c. 𝗚𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 - especially for assisted lambings.

𝟰) 𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗯𝘀:
a. 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗠, 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗠, 𝗖𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗥𝗨𝗠! - up to 10% body weight in the first 12 hours split over several feeds.
b. 𝗜𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟬% - On navels asap and reapply 8hours later.
c. Antibiotics in an outbreak only.

𝗛𝘆𝗴𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗲 at lambing is the main form of prevention of newborn lamb diseases and the best way at trying to reduce antibiotic usage.

Most losses at lambing occur in the first 48hrs of life or before lambing even begins.

Lambs which die in the neonatal period cost more than they may initially appear. It is calculated to be around £25 per lamb up to the point of lambing.

The next few posts to follow will illustrate the most common diseases the new born lamb may encounter and treatment and prevention strategies.

Sheep lameness causes 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻, 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 and 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 each year in labour, treatments and premature culling. The industry targets less than 2% by 2021.

Winter can be a challenging time in lameness control on farms, whether it be challenging conditions outside or increased stocking densities inside.

𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝟱 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀, 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟱 𝗽𝗼𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻:
𝗖𝘂𝗹𝗹 - Chronic ewes, hopefully in your pre-tupping checks.
𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 - Move feeders regularly and indoors have a designated lameness pen.
𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 - Catch and treat appropriately quickly, then move to a lameness group.
𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 - New and returning stock for 4 weeks and treat as required.
𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗲 - 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝘁𝘃𝗮𝘅 - a good opportunity at time of scanning or housing to boost immunity at lambing and into the grazing season.

𝕃𝕒𝕞𝕖𝕟𝕖𝕤𝕤 𝕚𝕟 𝔻𝕒𝕚𝕣𝕪 ℂ𝕠𝕨𝕤

Around 25% of all dairy cows may be experiencing some degree of lameness at any one time. The average cost of lameness in terms of treatment costs, loss of yield and potential for shortened productive life of the cow may be up to £180, which at current levels equates to nearly £15,000 for an average-sized herd.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗯𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲:
- cattle housing floor quality
- cow track condition
- cows being forced to stand for too long on hard surfaces
- cubicle design
- ineffective foot trimming
- infectious diseases and poor nutrition

Good record-keeping and effective recognition of the problems can help in determining suitable strategies for reducing future mobility problems specific to individual herds.

𝕄𝕒𝕤𝕥𝕚𝕥𝕚𝕤

Mastitis causes a cow’s udder tissue to become inflamed and painful. Reducing mastitis will help you produce more high-quality milk and increase your herd’s saleable milk yield.

Mastitis can very quickly cause permanent damage and a long-term reduction in milk yield.

𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿:

𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 - where you can see the signs of an udder infection.
Clots in the milk
Reduced milk yield
Swelling, hardness, redness -> Pain

𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘀 - no visible signs of an udder infection.
The udder and the milk look normal.
Reduced milk yield

The best way to control mastitis is to protect cows from getting new infections.

The most common mastitis pathogens are found in the udder tissues, spreading from cow-to-cow (contagious pathogens) or in the herd's surroundings (environmental pathogens), such as bedding materials, manure and soil.

Working out when cows get infected and where most infections are coming from is a useful first step. You can then focus on what you can do to prevent new cases in the herd.

ℂ𝕠𝕦𝕘𝕙𝕚𝕟𝕘 ℂ𝕒𝕝𝕧𝕖𝕤

𝗕𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 (𝗕𝗥𝗗) is a multifactorial disease caused by bacteria and viruses which results in inflammation and damage to the lungs and respiratory tract. It is the most common reason for poor performance and death in growing calves.

Cost estimates of pneumonia vary between £43 per dairy calf and £82 per affected suckler calf, with costs rising when re-treatments are required as well as the impact on growth rates and future production.

A lot of these pathogens live in the calf’s respiratory tract without causing disease, but when the calf is stressed they can cause pneumonia.

𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗳 𝗽𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗮:
- Mixing different age groups of calves
- Transport stress
- Sudden changes in diet (e.g. weaning)
- Exposure to draughts
- Overstocking
- Inadequate ventilation
- Too many interventions at once i.e. weaning at the same time as disbudding causing stress

Weaning and housing are typically very stressful for calves and pneumonia often becomes apparent. Vaccination can be an important tool on the farm in managing BRD. Contact one of our vets to discuss managing the disease further.

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘃𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 – we are enrolled with the Antimicrobial Project - Arwain Vet Cymru. Most practices in Wales are engaging with this year-long project to investigate how we can improve our control of anti-microbial use on farms.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲:

1. Reducing antibiotics by instigating Responsible Use

2. Educating farmers about medicine use

3. Improving the consistency of prescribing in veterinary practices. This will require a consensus, e.g. with pricing.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲?

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the ability of a microorganism (like bacteria, viruses, and some parasites) to stop an antimicrobial (such as antibiotics, antivirals, and antimalarials) from working against it. This can cause treatments to become ineffective. This is a problem in pets and farm animals.

AMR is a shared problem that must be addressed using a ‘One Health’ approach bringing medical, veterinary, and environmental professionals together. This approach is a key element of the UK 5-year action plan (2019-2024) for antimicrobial resistance , which describes AMR as one of the most pressing global health challenges we face this century.

How are your cows performing?

Block calving suckler herds should be aiming to be calving 65% in the first 3 weeks, 90% in the first six weeks and aim for over 94% calves reared.

In a compact calving pattern you have older and heavier calves at weaning (meaning more value!).

Assuming £2/kg live weight and 1kg/day growth rate (makes the math easier) you could be looking at losses of £42 a head for any calves born after that first 6 weeks and £140 a head for any calves born 10 weeks later.

By achieving a compact calving pattern and target calf rearing targets this can mean up to £100 a cow per year, equating to £5000 a year in a 50 cow herd, not to mention the benefits in labour and management.

The first step to knowing how your cows are doing is scanning. Ideally 4 weeks after the bull has been out or between 10 and 12 weeks since he’s been in to see how many cows in that first 6 weeks he’s caught.
