As the equestrian community has increasingly placed emphasis on properly fitting equipment so the choice of training provider, fitter, and tack has grown. It can be hard for an owner, rider, or equestrian professional to know which equine fitter can provide the service they need. The Equine Fitters Council, as the independent authority for equine fitters and fitting bodies, provides voluntary regulation for the fitting sector. In doing so, we help to enhance horse welfare, improve experiences for riders, drivers, and equestrian workers, and build public confidence in this essential service.

🅽🅴🆆🆂 Updated RCVS guidance for vets prescribing POM-V medicines will come into effect on 1 September 2023. Notable policy additions include the requirement for a physical examination of the horse before antimicrobials and antiparasitics (wormers) can be prescribed.

This has understandably prompted some confusion around the general sale of wormers and how this will be affected, so we have sought to provide some clarity around this for horse owners on our website here:

Please read the full article as a few folk seem to have got the wrong end of the stick 😁 No change to most wormer sales and the other potential implications seem more like a law of unintended consequences.

🤔💩🐛 Pinworm really can be a pain in the bum and are continuing to be more and more prevalent in horses. If seen in the dung it can sometimes be tricky to identify between pinworm and roundworm. Pinworm are small white worms with a pointy end, usually around 5cm (2 inches) in length. Roundworm tend to be much bigger, creamy white in colour and more the shape of a common earthworm. 🎯 We’re doing a live evening talk at our local equestrian centre, Benridge Riding Centre , near Morpeth, Northumberland, on the evening of Tuesday 11th July ‘23. If you’re local we hope you’ll join us as we lift the lid on this literal can of worms! Our Director, Claire, will talk through simple, practical steps that we can all take to address wormer resistance, one of the biggest challenges we’re facing as horse owners today.

📅🐛 We’ll cover how to plan your horse’s parasite control, which tests to use and when, how to test for resistance, plus paddock management and ways to protect your horse without relying on chemicals. Free entry, all welcome. More information at 👉 bit.ly/benridge-worming-talk

𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁 - 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲'𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 👀

👁 The eye is set on the side of the head. This allows for a 340 degree arc of peripheral vision meaning even when his head is facing forward, your horse can detect movement almost around all of his body.

👁 The eyeball is protected by a bony socket called the orbit. This is made up of several bones, contains muscles, nerves, blood vessels and ducts that produce and drain tears.

👁 Monocular vision allows your horse to focus independently with each eye - and binocular vision allows him to judge distance.

👁 To focus, your horse needs to move his head. This is especially important when he's approaching a jump, where he needs to lift his head to assess the height and depth of the jump.

👁 Riding your horse in an over flexed position reduces his field of vision. He has no forward view in front of him, and is forced to proceed blind and put all his trust in his rider.

This upcoming webinar is especially relevant as we head into Spring! Sweet Itch is the most common allergic skin condition in horses, caused by a reaction to the protein in the saliva of some biting insects. 🪰

Despite the prevalence of the condition, there are some misconceptions surrounding why it occurs and how it can be treated. This talk, with equine vet Dr Laura Turner, will break down causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention methods. This will ensure you are positioned to deliver the best care if you ever encounter Sweet Itch in your horse or a horse you care for. 🐴

The talk takes place online via Microsoft Teams and is open to all. For BHS coaches, this event provides 1 CPD point.
